Denmark: DR Stands Firm Amidst Calls for Eurovision Boycott!

In a recent turn of events, over 1,400 musicians and professionals from the Finnish music industry have rallied behind a petition urging a boycott of Israel at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. This call for action has ignited a broader conversation, drawing parallels to past controversies and prompting responses from key players, including the Danish broadcaster DR (Danmarks Radio).

The Finnish petition, signed by notable musicians such as Olavi Uusivirta, Paleface, and Axel Ehnström, all of whom represented Finland in 2011, contends that if Israel is not excluded from the music competition, Finland should voluntarily withdraw. Media outlets, including the BBC, have reported on the growing momentum behind this movement, emphasizing its impact on the international Eurovision community.

As the Finnish initiative gains traction, the spotlight has shifted to the response from Yle, the Finnish public service broadcaster, and DR, the Danish counterpart. Jere Nurminen, the communication chief at Yle, has confirmed that they are closely monitoring developments surrounding the petition and are planning to engage with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest.

The controversy has further deepened with the steadfast position maintained by DR. Gustav Lützhøft, Head of Editorial in DR Culture, Children, and Youth, underscores the complexity of the conflict, describing it as “unfortunate and extremely complicated.” In a statement to Politiken, Lützhøft acknowledges the myriad perspectives and nuances surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict, emphasizing its longstanding nature, stretching back further than the Eurovision Song Contest itself.

Lützhøft addresses the historical precedent of countries participating in Eurovision despite geopolitical tensions, citing the EBU’s commitment to conducting the competition. He emphasizes that DR has consistently supported the EBU in its decisions and remains unwavering in its stance, asserting that Israel should be allowed to participate in this year’s competition in Malmö.

The geopolitical dilemma surrounding Israel‘s participation in Eurovision is not new. Comparisons have been drawn to past controversies, notably Russia‘s exclusion from Eurovision 2022 due to the Ukraine invasion. The EBU’s declaration that Eurovision is “for TV stations – not for governments” has added complexity to the ongoing debate.

As the Eurovision community grapples with this multifaceted issue, the resolute positions of Yle and DR set the stage for a potentially contentious Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö. The unfolding events highlight the intersection of music, geopolitics, and the enduring impact of the Eurovision Song Contest on global conversations.

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix is set to take place on February 17 at DR Koncerthuset in Copenhagen, hosted by Stéphanie Surrugue and Sara Bro.

Although not a fan favorite, Reiley won the ticket to Liverpool in 2023. Despite his performance of “Breaking My Heart” in the second semi-final, he failed to qualify, gathering only 6 points, all from Iceland.

Denmark: Artists and Songs to be revealed on January 25!

Denmark‘s public broadcaster, DR, has announced that the revelation of the eight artists and their songs for Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2024 will take place on Thursday, January 25, in a press conference at 11:30 CET.

Erik Struve Hansen, the project manager of the Danish competition, intriguingly mentioned that at least one participant has been known from their past involvement in the Eurovision contest.

Radical Changes in DMGP

The selection process for this year’s competition concluded on October 27, with around 500 songs submitted. DR has undergone significant changes aiming to secure a spot in the final after a series of disappointing results. The focus has shifted towards selecting songs with potential both in DMGP and Eurovision. The emphasis is on choosing artists capable of meeting the demands of a large-scale event like Eurovision.

Here are the changes:

  1. All candidates can present their songs with a live orchestra, although this choice is not mandatory.
  2. The winner will be chosen through two rounds of voting. In the first round, the qualifying songs for the next and final phase will be randomly announced.
  3. The judging panel will consist of ten Danish Eurovision experts and ten international Eurovision specialists from the five most recent winning countries.
  4. The international jury will reflect the spirit of Eurovision and the trends in the international music scene for the selected entry.
  5. On February 10, one week before the final, all eight participants will perform unplugged/acoustic versions of their songs live on television.

Denmark: A returning artist among contestants of DMGP 2024!

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix will remain as the Danish selection format for Eurovision 2024. Great changes are expected to come to the competition next year as a try to overturn the tables and bring Denmark back to the Grand Final after five years. The Danish broadcaster now aims at a younger audience, in order to select a more appealing and in trend Eurovision act.

In a recent interview with eurosong.dk, Erik Struve Hansen, the project manager of the Danish competition, revealed that the eight songs and performers are already in place, however, everything is still secret. In early January, DR will reveal names and songs at a press conference. Erik, also made an interesting statement that at least one contestant has previously made a name for himself on a Eurovision stage. We will have to wait until the announcement of the eight competing entries to find out who that returning artist is.

DMGP 2024 will take place on February 17, 2024, while the participating songs are expected to be revealed about three weeks prior to the show, possibly in late January.

Despite not being the public’s favorite, Reiley won the ticket to Liverpool in 2023. He performed his song “Breaking My Heart” in the second semi-final, failing to qualify and scoring only 6 points, all from Iceland.

Denmark: Stéphanie Surrugue and Sara Bro will host the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2024!

Following, the conclusion of the submissions’ stage, DR has revealed the hosts of DMGP 2024.

Sara Bro is a Danish presenter and author. During her almost thirty-years career, Bro has hosted numerous programs on TV and the Radio.

Regarding her co-hosting, she stated that:

I grew up with Dansk Melodi Grand Prix both as the biggest and wildest TV event and as a precious treasure on cassette tape. Sequins and stilettos are in my blood, so it’s a huge honor for me to be the host and, on top of that, together with my idol ‘Mademoiselle Europe’.

DMGP 2024

Fundamental changes are expected to DMGP in 2024, with DR aiming at a performer seasoned and capable enough of coping with the demands of a big event, such as Eurovision. Specifically, the changes coming are the following:

  • Although it is not required, all contenders will have the opportunity to perform their songs with a live orchestra.
  • There will be two voting rounds to determine the winner. The songs that move forward to the second and final round will be revealed during the first round in a random order.
  • The jury will be composed of ten Danish Eurovision experts and ten international Eurovision experts from the five most recent winning countries. The international jury will select an entry that best embodies both the international music scene’s trends and the spirit of Eurovision.
  • All eight contestants will sing live, unplugged acoustic versions of their songs on television on February 10, one week before the final.

The DMGP 2024 will take place on February 17, 2024, while the participating songs are expected to be revealed about three weeks prior to the show, possibly in late January.

Despite not being the public’s favorite, Reiley won the ticket to Liverpool in 2023. He performed his song “Breaking My Heart” in the second semi-final, failing to qualify and scoring only 6 points, all from Iceland.
