Malta: MESC 2024 First semi-final takes place tonight!

The time we’re all waiting for, is slowly coming again. We are talking about the national final period of Eurovision Song Contest 2024! This year, the first country to air its national final, is Malta!

For the third year in a row, the island country is using the format of a national final and is organizing Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2024 (MESC), through which they are going to select their representative for the 68th Eurovision Song Contest.

36 artists are going to take part in Malta’s selection process for Eurovision 2024. A process consisting of semi-finals and the Grand Final, will select the artist and the song that is going to represent Malta in Malmö.

The first semi-final of MESC 2024 will be broadcasted at 21:00 CET. You can watch it through the live broadcast of TVM’s official website, by clicking HERE.

Participants

Today, we are going to see first nine artists, out of the 36 competing in MESC 2024, in tonight’s first semi-final.

The artists that will compete in tonight’s show are:

  • Kurt Calleja – “Misunderstood”
  • Sarah Bonnici – Loop”
  • Gail – Wild Card”
  • Mark Anthony Bartolo – Condition or Fiction”
  • Eliana Gomez Blanco – There’s Only Flowers”
  • OXYGYN – Cloudmaker”
  • Nathan – Ghost”
  • Lyndsay – Fire Proof”
  • Dominic Cini – Bewsa”

The Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2023 (MESC 2023)

Phase I – Song Submission and Selection

Those interested could subit their songs in the country’s public broadcaster. After the deadline, the 36 competing artists were selected.

Phase II – Semi Final
  • Artists will perform their songs live via a TV show that will be broadcasted for several weeks.
  • The top 12 artists via a combination of jury and public vote will qualify to the Grand Final.
Phase III – Grand Final
  • The Grand Final will be held in January 2024.
  • Every participant will have a budget of 5.000 euros for producing and filming a video-clip of its entry.
  • Every participant will film a live-on-tape performance in December 2023(the artists will have 60 minutes to film 3 performances and between these, the best will be chosen)
  • The winner will be decided from a jury and public vote.

Until we learn who is going to represent Malta in Eurovision 2024, let’s remember their song for last year’s contest. The Busker were the winners of MESC 2023 with the song “Dance (Our Own Party)” but they didn’t manage to qualify for the Grand Final ending up in 15th place of the First Semi-final with 3 points:

Malta: MESC first semi-final to take place on Friday | First songs of the season are about to be revealed!

It’s official! In two days, we’ll be able to listen to the first songs of Eurovision 2024 National Final season, and this time, they are coming from Malta!

As revealed in August, MESC 2024 will see significant changes. From now on, after the end of the submission period, the competitive part of MESC 2024, is about to begin, and the semi-finals will take place from October 27 to November 17.

A few minutes ago, Malta’s public broadcaster revealed through their Facebook page, the names of the first nine artists that will present their songs in the first semi-final of Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2024 (MESC):

The nine songs that will be presented are:

  • Kurt Calleja – Misunderstood
  • Sarah Bonnici – Loop
  • Gail – Wild Card
  • Mark Anthony Bartolo – Condition or Fiction
  • Eliana Gomez Blanco – There’s Only Flowers
  • OXYGYN – Cloudmaker
  • Nathan – Ghost
  • Lyndsay – Fire Proof
  • Dominic Cini – Bewsa

The songs will be revealed through TVM’s show “XOW” in 21:00 CET, and the voting will begin after every song is presented. After all semi-finals are over, the twelve artists with the highest scores from every semi-final, will advance to the Grand Final.

All of the above mark the start of the National Finals season for Eurovision 2024, as well as the release of the first songs of the season. So on Friday, we will may be able to listen to the song that will represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024!

Malta: The participants’ list of MESC 2024!

The Maltese archipelago has confirmed its 2024 Eurovision participation. Along with confirming its participation, it was announced in August that Malta Eurovision Song Contest (MESC) will return as the country’s selection process for the third year in a row. The submission window opened in late August and remained open until September 30.

After reviewing the submitted proposals, the 36 participants, who will participate in the Semi-Final of MESC were announced.

According to the official statement of TVM on Facebook, Malta Eurovision Song Contest’s 2024 participants are the following:

What’s next?

As revealed in August, MESC 2024 will see significant changes. In depth and from now on, the competitive procedure of MESC 2024 will include the following phases:

Phase II – Semi Final
  • Artists will perform their songs live via a TV show that will be broadcasted for several weeks.
  • The top 12 artists via a combination of jury and public vote will qualify to the Grand Final.
  • The procedure is expected to start somewhere between October and November.
Phase III – Grand Final
  • The Grand Final will be held in January 2024.
  • Every participant will have a budget of 5.000 euros for producing and filming a video-clip of its entry.
  • Every participant will film a live-on-tape performance in December 2023(the artists will have 60 minutes to film 3 performances and between these, the best will be chosen)
  • The winner will be decided from a jury and public vote.

After two consecutive years of non-qualification, Malta is trying its best in order to achieve again a spot in the Grand Final.

Junior Eurovision 2023: Watch the video clip of the Maltese entry!

Back in July, Yulan Law won MJESC, Malta’s selection process for Junior Eurovision, after the decision of a professional jury and the public vote.

Following the leak of Yulan’s song yesterday, the official video-clip of the Maltese entry for Junior Eurovision 2023 was released today via the official Youtube channel of Junior Eurovision.

Who is Yulan Law?

Yulan Law is now 14 years old and she was born in Malta. She started her musical journey at the age of 5 and she also plays musical instruments, such as violin and piano.

To date, she has been a participant in The Voice Kids MaltaMalta’s Got Talent and New Wave Junior in Russia. The young performer took part in the Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest three times before securing her first win in the competition.

The 21st Junior Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Nice, France, on the 26th of November, following Lissandro’s win last year in Yerevan.

Junior Eurovision 2023: Listen to Malta’s entry!

Back in July, Yulan Law won MJESC, Malta’s selection process for Junior Eurovision, after the decision of a professional jury and the public vote. The search for the song that Yulan would sing in Nice started at a later stage, in September.

Although, the official premiere of “Stronger“, Malta’s entry for Junior Eurovision 2023, is scheduled for tomorrow evening, the song was leaked today.

The 21st Junior Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Nice, France, on the 26th of November, following Lissandro’s win last year in Yerevan.

Malta 2024: Submissions for MESC have opened!

Malta has opened their call to find their representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

Artists can send their compositions until September 30, 2023.  The rules to compete at the Malta national selection as well as the submitting form can be found here.  During  the first stage of the process broadcaster PBS will review the candidates and select which will be the candidates to the national final.

Road to MESC 2024

The selected artists will perform their songs in a televised show that will take place for a number of weeks.  However, only 12 acts will make it to the Maltese Grand Final.

In contrast, for the Grand Final, MESC 2024, the 12 finalists performances are pre-recorded.  The artists are expected to record their live on tape performance on December 2023.  The 12 finalists will receive a €5,000 grant to record a music video of their songs.

A combined jury and public vote will decide which act will represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

Malta: Changes in MESC’s format | MESC 2024 in depth!

Malta will choose its entry for Eurovision 2024 via a national final for the third year in a row. Malta Eurovision Song Contest, Malta’s national selection will start in October and will be finished in January, when the next Maltese act will be selected.

Regardless choosing the same format for selecting Malta’s entry, MESC 2024 will see significant changes. Specifically:

  • The Grand Final of MESC 2024 will be held in January and will include live-on-tape performances and a video-clip.
  • There will be no quarterfinals.
  • MESC’s semifinal will be held for several weeks, where the competing artists will perform their songs live.

Below, you can read in depth every detail regarding the competitive procedure of MESC 2024:

Phase I – Song submission
  • Song submission starts on the 28th of August and will be completed on the 20th of September 2023.
  • The number of participants qualified to the next phase(Semi Final)remains unknown.
  • The announcement of the participants that will go to the next stage will occur in October 2023.

Malta: With Yulan Law to Junior Eurovision 2023!

12 young artists competed today in order to win the prize of representing the Maltese Archipelago in Junior Eurovision 2023 through “Malta Junior Eurovision Song Content”, the Maltese national selection. 80% of the results was determined by a jury and the other 20% via a public SMS vote.

The artists that competed with covers version songs were the following:

  4. Aaliyah Grech
  5. Anneka Xerri
  6. Shyann Cutajar
  7. Daylin Cassar Randich
  8. Cesca Galea
  9. Emma Farrugia

Yulan Law, who has attempted to represent Malta in three other occasions in 2019,2020 and 2021, was crowned as the winner of the selection and therefore will represent Malta in Junior Eurovision 2023. Daylin Cassar Randich and Dawn Desira finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The search for the song that Yulan will sing in Nice will start in September, when PBS will open the submissions for composers and songwriters.

The Junior Eurovision Contest 2023 will take place in Nice, France on the 26th of November after Lissandro’s win last year in Yerevan.

Eurovision 2023: Grand Final takes place tonight!

The moment that every Eurofan waited for is finally here! The 67th Eurovision Song Contest officially comes to an end tonight, as the Grand Final takes place tonight, live from Liverpool!

The twentysix remaining countries will take part in tonight’s show, but only one will be the winner of Eurovision 2023.

The hosts of this evening will be Julia Sanina from The Hardkiss, Hannah Waddingham, Alesha Dixon and Graham Norton.
