Iceland: The country will eventually be present in Malmö!

RÚV has finally reached a decision. Iceland will participate in the 68th Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö with Hera Björk and her Söngvakeppnin winning entry “Scared of Heights“.

Hera Björk won the national selection a week ago, however Iceland’s participation in Eurovision 2024 remained unsure in the meantime.

Iceland’s participation in uncertainty

In January, RÚV stated that the country’s participation in Malmö is uncertain and will be discussed after the conclusion of Söngvakeppnin 2024. The decision would be made by RÚV’s group and the winner of the national selection.

As a consensus was achieved in RÚV’s Eurovision group, Iceland will ultimately participate in Eurovision 2024.

Concerns regarding Söngvakeppnin’s results

Söngvakeppnin’s results sparked widespread criticism in Iceland, as Bashar Murad’s entry won the first round of voting but lost to Hera Björk in the second round. Many viewers expressed concerns about voting irregularities, claiming that votes for Bashar Murad were counted for Hera Björk instead. Furthermore, the co-author of Bashar Murad’s entry demanded an independent investigation of the contest’s results in order to maintain the organization’s trust and reputation.

In the meantime, one of “Scared of Heights” songwriters, Ásdís María Viðarsdóttir, has stated that she will not be following Eurovision 2024, as she does not think the results were fair.

Iceland is allocated to perform in the second half of the first semi-final on May 7 with Hera Björk and “Scared of Heights“. It will be Hera Björk’s second time-as a representative-on the Eurovision stage, having previously represented Iceland in 2010.

Eurovision 2024: The voting window will be open throughout the Grand Final | Big Five and Sweden will perform live in the semi-finals too!

In exactly two months from now, we will know the winner of Eurovision 2024. However and in order to keep the excitement high, SVT has announced some changes to the 2024 edition.

The voting window will be extended in the Grand Final

As for now, following the conclusion of all the participants’ performances in the Grand Final, the voting window opens for the public. However, this year, the voting will start at the beginning of the show, just before the first performance. This system was only implemented twice before , in 2010 and 2011 and will return in 2024.

Moreover, fans in non-participating countries (the Rest of the World) will now have nearly 24 hours to vote for their favorite songs before each live show begins. Online voting for the Rest of The World will begin immediately after the second dress rehearsal for each Semi-Final and Grand Final concludes the previous night, and will remain open until the live shows begin.

For these changes, the executive producer of Eurovision 2024, Ebba Adielsson, mentions:

Voting in the final has previously opened when all 26 entries have finished singing. Instead, we want to provide the opportunity to engage the viewers from the start – if you see something you like, you should be able to vote immediately. You can also, of course, wait until the recap at the end, as in previous years.

SVT has positive experience with this voting procedure in ‘Melodifestivalen’ (Sweden’s national final). In addition, there are viewers in other parts of the world who want to vote and we want to give them a better opportunity to participate in the result. Now they don’t have to set an alarm clock in the middle of the night.

Big Five and Sweden will perform in the semi-finals

The artists from the Big Five nations—France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom—as well as the host country, Sweden, will each perform their entry in full live during the semi-finals for the first time.

Previously, during the Semi-Finals, a brief video snippet of each of their rehearsals was shown. The Big Five and Sweden will now get the opportunity to present their entries to the audience live alongside the competing acts on the Eurovision stage.

However, their performances will not be presented during the interval, as usual, but they will be slotted in between the participants’ acts.

  • Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom will perform in the first semi-final
  • France, Italy and Spain will perform in the second semi-final

Regarding this, the executive producer of Eurovision 2024, Ebba Adielsson, mentions:

We think that this change gives the Big Five countries and the host country a fairer playing field in the Grand Final, as they now have the opportunity to perform “for real” on stage in the Semi-Finals. It is also a win for both the audience in the arena and the viewers at home, in that they get to see all the acts competing this year live before the Grand Final.

The changes will not stop here, with SVT teasing us with an additional major change.

Sweden: Melodifestivalen 2024 final had the worst TV ratings in history!

The Final of Melodifestivalen 2024, was broadcast by SVT and SVT Play last Saturday. We now know that Marcus & Martinus will represent Sweden at Eurovision Song Contest 2024 to be held in Malmö, Sweden. The song “Unforgettable“ placed first in both the International Jury and the Public Vote!

A few days after the grand finale of the contest, MMS has learned the latest audience data for this year’s edition of Melodifestivalen 2024.

The final of Melodifestivalen 2024 was watched by an average of 2.786.000 spectators in its 122-minute duration. In terms of audience share, the grand final swept the board again reaching a very high 72.43%.

Compared to the 2023 edition, the final of the contest lost 633.000 spectators and 10.42 points in audience share (in 2023 the final was seen by 3.419.000 spectators and an 82.85% share of the screen ).

Historically, it is the worst audience ratings in terms of spectators of a Melodifestivalen finale since audiences began to be measured in 1994. It is important to note at this point in the analysis that the decline in the consumption of linear television in favour of platforms has a lot of weight in this decrease in viewers and increase in share that has been happening for several years in Melodifestivalen and Swedish television.

Iceland: Israeli influence behind Hera Björk’s victory!

According to the Icelandic press the Israeli broadcaster KAN is behind the campaign against Bashar Murad.

The Israeli Yogev Segal who organized the campaign against Bashar Murad in Söngvakeppnin, Iceland’s selection show for the Eurovision Song Contest, according to the Icelandic website MANNLÍF, is an employee of Israel’s public broadcaster. Yogev Segal is the founder of a Facebook discussion group for Icelanders who support Israel.

Yogev Segal seems to have urged all members of this group to vote for Hera Björk in the final of Söngvakeppnin 2024. That is, he suggested that Israel’s supporters in Iceland should urge as many people as possible to vote for Hera Björk’s song. It was, according to him, the safest way to ensure that there would be no Palestinian on the stage of the competition in Sweden in May.

Within the aforementioned group, Segal admits to working for Israel’s state television, KAN, which, like the Icelandic one, is responsible for Israel’s participation in Eurovison. He suggests that reporting on his campaign is grist to the conspiracy theory mill. Finally he claims that Israel had no interest in the Icelandic national final.

For the record, Söngvakeppnin 2024 was won by Hera Björk with the song “Scared of Heights”, however this year the participation of the country is not considered certain, as the issue of the conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Palestine and the participation of the former in the competition is a point of friction in Iceland’s public sphere. The final decision on whether the island of ice and fire in Malmö will take part is expected today.
