Italy: The results of the first night of Sanremo 2023!

The Prima Serata of the 73rd Festival di Sanremo is here! We listened to the first 14 songs of this year’s Festival for the first time and, at the end of the evening, found out the jury of journalists‘ voting (i.e. print and TV journalists by 33%, website journalists by 33% and radio journalists by 33%).

Amadeus, together with Gianni Morandi and Chiara Ferragni, were the presenters of the first night. There were also several guest appearances, including Mahmood and Blanco, winners of last year’s Sanremo and representatives of Italy at the Eurovision 2022 contest in Turin.

The show started with a greeting by the president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, followed by an appearance by legendary italian comedian Roberto Benigni.

The performances

Anna OxaSali (Canto dell’anima)

A veteran of the Sanremo Festival, as this year it is her 15th participation! She won in 1989 and 1999. She also represented Italy in Eurovision 1989. This year she returns after 12 years with a dramatic song where she showcases her vocal skills. A very good start to the Festival!

gIANMARIAMostro

A very strong performance and an emotional song from the young singer, who won Sanremo Giovani and is making his Sanremo debut this year.

Mr.RainSuperheroes

First appearance at the Festival for the rapper Mr. Rain with a rap ballad accompanied by the piano. A children’s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYu0qJ0EJM8choir makes an appearance during the song. Admittedly a very moving performance.

Marco MengoniDue vite

The winner of Sanremo 2013 and Italy’s representative in Eurovision 2013 with the song L’essenziale returns to the Festival this year. One of the big favorites to win this year as well, ten years after his win in 2013. The song Due vite is the singer’s third participation in Sanremo. A strong dramatic song and an excellent vocal performance shows that the singer is rightfully a favourite.

ArieteMare di guai

A vintage slow song with a romantic presentation by the young singer.

UltimoAlba

Winner of Sanremo Giovani 2018, runner-up at Sanremo 2019 and the second big favorite of this year’s Festival. The song is in the same style as the singer’s previous entries and the performance is, as his performances usually are, very strong and passionate.

Coma_CoseL’addio

Second appearance for the duo at the Sanremo Festival after 2021. A touching song that tells a personal story of the duet.

ElodieDue

Fan favorite Elodie returns to Sanremo with a dynamic song with funk elements. A demanding vocal performance, which the singer manages to pull off.

Leo GassmanTerzo cuore

After his appearance at Sanremo Giovani 2019, the young singer returns with a more rhythmic pop song that seems to be a crowd pleaser.

I Cugini di CampagnaLettera 22

First appearance at the Festival, surprisingly, for the group that already completes 53 years of career. The song is classic Italian pop with lots of retro elements.

Gianluca GrignaniQuando ti manca il fiato

Seventh participation in the Festival for the rock singer. A classic Italian pop rock piece with a strong performance.

OllyPolvere

A very rhythmic song by another Sanremo Giovani finalist, in complete contrast to what we have heard so far.

Colla ZioNon mi va

A boy band with a funky rhythmic song that manages to fill the stage.

Mara SatteiDuemilaminuti

Her first appearance in Sanremo. A very classy and excellent vocal performance for the last song of the night.

The results

At the end of the night, we found out the journalist’s voting of the first set of this year’s songs. The results were the following:

In detail, he said that he will announce the finalists of Festival di Sanremo 2023, next Sunday, December 4 on TG1 on 13:30 CET.

He stated that for yet another year, what is of utmost importance in the selection process is the song and not the singer as “the song is what brigs the success to the singer and not vice-versa”.

Sanremo 2023: Amadeus wants Britney Spears and Lady Gaga as special guests

The first rumors about the 73rd Sanremo Festival are emerging.  The artistic director of the Italian festival wants pop superstars Britney Spears and Lady Gaga as international guests.

According to the website Coming Soon, Amadeus wants to have the pop princess in Sanremo.

In the early 2000s Britney Spears, was one of the most renowned and highest paid pop stars in the world. However, in 2008 she ended in a conservatorship with her father as conservator.  Britney continued working but suffered the lack of freedom until August 2021. Winner of countless music awards, Britney had her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at the age of 21.

According to these rumors, the managers of Britney Spears have already been contacted and therefore the negotiation is underway. In addition, someone revealed that Amadeus was undecided whether to call Britney Spears or Lady Gaga and that the choice was not easy. Finally, it seems that Spears will receive at least 200,000 euros for her participation.

Italy: Amadeus returns as artistic director and presenter of Sanremo 2023 and 2024!

Italian public broadcaster RAI has just announced that Amadeus, artistic director and presenter of Sanremo from 2020 onwards, will return to these two positions not only in Sanremo 2023 but also 2024!

Amadeus will be the Artistic Director and presenter of the 2023 and 2024 editions of the San Remo Italian Song Festival. This was agreed this morning during a meeting at which Rai CEO Carlo Fuortes, along with Prime Time CEO Stefano Coletta, welcomed Amadeus into a long and cordial conversation. “I am pleased and honored by the proposal of CEO Carlo Fuortes and Prime Time CEO Stefano Coletta. Having received this offer now allows me to work immediately. I look forward to starting,” said Amadeus.

RAI

We expect and hope for success from Italy in the next two years, as it was Amadeus who, as the artistic director, chose Måneskin to compete in Sanremo 2021, leading them to victory in Eurovision 2021, but also Mahmood & Blanco this year, who are already considered one of the biggest favorites to win Eurovision on home soil in Turin!

The ranking so far

After the first four nights, the Mahmood & Blanco duo continues to be in the lead, being the big favorite to win the 72nd Sanremo Festival and represent Italy in Eurovision 2022 in May. In second place is Gianni Morandi, legend of Italian music yet probably this year’s Sanremo surprise so far. The top 3 is completed by Elisa, who from the first place after the second night has now dropped to the third. In any case, this trio is expected to reach the final round that will determine the winner. Nevertheless, as Sanremo’s long history has taught us, no one can rule out the possible entrance of Irama, Sangiovanni, Emma, La Rappresentante di Lista or another surprise entry into the top three after the audience votes.

The voting

There are two rounds of voting tonight. In the first round, only the television audience has the right to vote. The ranking of the audience will be taken into account and will be combined with the scores of the previous nights.

Then, positions 23 -4 will be unveiled. The top three in the ranking, without their exact placing being revealed, will advance to the second round of voting.

In the second round, all previous voting for the top 3 artists from the previous nights and rankings will be canceled. The televote (34%), the journalists (33%) and the demoscopic jury (33%) will vote among the top 3 from scratch, in order to determine the winner.

The winning song of Sanremo 2022 is automatically considered to be Italy’s participation in Eurovision 2022. However, the winner still has the right to refuse and in that case, the Sanremo 2022 organizing committee and RAI will select one of the other artists to represent the country, according to their own criteria.
