Melodifestivalen 2022, your favourite Swedish national selection process, has left the Avicii Arena and from this week and on moves to Friends Arena, in Stockholm, for the rest of the three shows.

A while ago, SVT, the Swedish national broadcaster released the lyrics of all seven competing songs, of the fourth semi-final, the last bunch of songs that will be competing this year, in the hopes of representing Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin.

You can read the lyrics of the fourth semi-final songs below:

  • Anna Bergendahl – Higher Power (Writers: Anna Bergendahl, Thomas G:son, Bobby Ljunggren, Erik Bernholm )

I was alone

I was a starving eremite without a home

And the sand in the hourglass pouring on

A howling wolf without a pack

Little did I know

There was a seed

And with some water and attention it would lead

Into a leaf turning into a tree

Roots spreading through the darkest woods

Little did I know

I didn’t know

I see a higher power rise

A spirit larger than life

Cutting right through the fire

Turning the wind

Right before my eyes

I see a higher power rise

A spirit larger than life

Digging right through the dirt

Releasing the dam

And so, I arise

On my own

Kept walking through the wilderness ’til I had grown

Into a thousand-year-old oak, give me a throne

And I’ll wear the crown of thorns

Little did I know

I didn’t know

I see a higher power rise

A spirit larger than life

Cutting right through the fire

Turning the wind

Right before my eyes

I see a higher power rise

A spirit larger than life

Digging right through the dirt

Releasing the dam

And so, I arise

And so, I arise

Oh, I didn’t know

And so, I arise

Oh, I didn’t know

I see a higher power rise

A spirit larger than life

Cutting right through the fire

Turning the wind

Right before my eyes

I see a higher power rise

A spirit larger than life

Digging right through the dirt

Releasing the dam

And so, I arise

And so, I arise

  • Lillasyster – Till Our Days Are Over (Writers: Jimmy Jansson, Palle Hammarlund, Ian-Paolo Lira, Martin Westerstrand )

If I were a hero for one day

Maybe I’d walk another way

Fighting against the odds and break

Thru the bricks in the wall

Cause I wanna take you home

Been loosing ourselves too long

Somebody prove me wrong

I won’t let go

I’m right here with open arms

Nothing can break my iron heart

I would climb any mountain

I would fight any fire

Scream loud, breaking the silence now

Till our days are over

I would climb any mountain

Stand tall, big as a giant

I would find a way somehow

Till our days are over

If I were a hero for one day

I wouldn’t be scared and run away

Open the streets and raise the gates

I would break thru it all

And I’m gonna take you home

Been loosing ourselves too long

Somebody prove me wrong

I would climb any mountain

I would fight any fire

Scream loud, breaking the silence now

Till our days are over

I would climb any mountain

Stand tall, big as a giant

I would find a way somehow

Till our days are over

I’ll never fail you

Be right beside you

I’ll never walk away

I would climb any mountain

Stand tall, big as a giant

I would find a way somehow

Till our days are over

I would climb any mountain

I would fight any fire

Scream loud, breaking the silence now

Till our days are over

Till our days are over

Till our days are over

I’ll be breaking the silence now

Till our days are over

  • Tenori – La Stella (Writers: Dan Sundquist, Kristian Lagerström, Marcos Ubeda, Bobby Ljunggren, Sarah Börjesson Wassberg )

Per te la mia stella splenderà

La speranza vincerà

Stuck in the dark

I was a shell of myself

All of my dreams in a blur

In a room full of doubt

The sound was gone

Then I looked to the sky

I knew

I could see the end of the road

Letting me out

Per te la mia stella splenderà

La speranza vincerà

Già il sogno vive più che mai

Lo seguirò

Per sempre volerò

Con te nel cielo blu

Now that I know

How can I turn away

If there’s a way to resist

It´s a will-o´-the-wisp

I was played for a fool

But they won’t trick me twice

Since you made my dreams come alive

Letting me out

Per te la mia stella splenderà

La speranza vincerà

Già il sogno vive più che mai

Lo seguirò

Per sempre volerò

Con te nel cielo blu

I hit the ground

With all that doubt

But you were there

And taught my dreams to fly high

Per te la mia stella splenderà

La speranza vincerà

Già il sogno vive più che mai

Lo seguirò

Per sempre volerò

Con te nel cielo blu

We rise like a dream

My life is in your hands

La stella sarà

con te

  • MEDINA – In i dimman (Writers: Jimmy “Joker” Thörnfeldt, Sami Rekik, Dino Medanhodzic, Ali Jammali )

  • Angelino  – The End (Writers: Angelino Markenhorn, Julie Aagaard, Melanie Wehbe, Thomas Stengaard )

Oh

Oh

This could be the end

You could drop a pin

Suffocating silence

We’ve been here before

I’m outside the door

You’re in the bathroom crying

You say that

I’m so unaffected

I act so cool

and so collected

Oh

Hear me out

Before you go

I need you to know

You’ve got your doubts

I got my own

But trust me I am

Not that unaffected

You’re mistaken

If this is it

You need to know

My heart’s stuck on you

Lying skin to skin

Do you feel a thing

Tell me what you’re thinking

Cause I don’t understand

What’s your exit plan

Cause I’m hurting within

You say that

I’m so unaffected

I’m not that cool

and so collected

Oh

Hear me out

Before you go

I need you to know

You’ve got your doubts

I got my own

But trust me I am

Not that unaffected

You’re mistaken

If this is it

You need to know

My heart’s stuck on

You

You

If it’s the end

I need to know

You

So hear me out

Before you go

I need you to know

You’ve got your doubts

I got my own

But trust me I am

Not that unaffected

You’re mistaken

If this is it

You need to know

My heart’s stuck on

You

  • Klara Hammarström – Run To The Hills (Writers: Jimmy “Joker” Thörnfeldt, Julie Aagaard, Anderz Wrethov, Klara Hammarström)

They say I

Been running from myself

But they don’t understand

Coz the pain of you

Is in my every cell

And it’s pumping through my veins

And I feel it through my body like fire tonight

And it pulls me in

I’m howling at the moonlight

And I

Run—to the hills

I’m making it on my own

I’m facing my demons, here I go

I’m running, I’m running alone

To the hills

Where the brokenhearted go

I’m running to save my haunted soul

Run to the hills

Run—to the hills

I’m making it on my own

I’m facing my demons, here I go

Run to the hills

They say you

Won’t flee a broken heart

The nights move in on you

But they have never

Raced under the stars

The flight will see me through

And I feel it through my body like fire tonight

And it pulls me in

I’m howling at the moonlight

And I

Run—to the hills

I’m making it on my own

I’m facing my demons, here I go

I’m running, I’m running alone

To the hills

Where the brokenhearted go

I’m running to save my haunted soul

I run to the hills

Run—to the hills

I’m making it on my own

I’m facing my demons, here I go

I’m running, I’m running alone

To the hills

Where the brokenhearted go

I’m running to save my haunted soul

Run to the hills

And it pulls me in

I’m howling at the moonlight

And I

Run—to the hills

I’m making it on my own

I’m facing my demons here I go

I’m running, I’m running alone

To the hills

Where the brokenhearted go

I’m running to save my haunted soul

I run to the hills

Run—to the hills

I’m making it on my own

I’m facing my demons here I go

I’m running, I’m running alone

To the hills

Where the brokenhearted go

I’m running to save my haunted soul

Run to the hills

Sweden: Anna Bergendahl the Melodifestivalen winner if Eurovision voting system was in place?

A very interesting article was published on the official website of Melodifestivalen. The question for the columnist is whether Anna Bergendahl would have been the winner of the Swedish national final if they had applied the Eurovision voting system.

To answer this question we need to keep in mind the differences in the way in which Melodifestivalen and Eurovision vote. At Melodifestivalen, public voting is done via a mobile app and not overall, but by age (plus those who vote by phone). Also at Melodifestivalen every voter has five votes that he can share as he wants, while in Eurovision the practice has proved that the overwhelming majority of the public only votes for his favorite song.

But let’s see now, according to the SVT article, why it is likely that the outcome of the Melodifestivalen final would have been different if the voting system in Eurovision had been applied.

Initially, as we saw in Anna Bergendahl’s “Kingdom Come”, was first in the three age groups of older people (over 45) and in voting by telephone. On the contrary, it was 11th (!) in the two younger age groups (under 15 years), while in the other two middle age groups (16 to 29 and 30 to 44) it was 6th and 3rd respectively.

Failure to participate in in-app voting would make the number of young people voting much smaller, as these ages usually do not vote by telephone, where there is a charge. This would automatically raise the balance in favor of older people, as their turnout would be significantly higher. Of course nothing is given and only estimates can be made, as it is possible that some of the young people who voted through the application, if this was not possible, would vote by phone.

Another important element that reinforces the theory that Anna Bergendahl would be the winner of the Melodifestivalen if the voting system were the same as Eurovision is that what matters in the second is to be first in voter preference rather than just having a general acceptance.

“Kingdom Come” received almost all of its votes from the three major age groups and those who voted by phone. If we take into account the above, then it is very likely that there was no in-app voting, but only by telephone and based on the extensive support received by Anna Bergendahl from the people who are most involved in phone voting. the winner of the public vote.

All of the above is not our analysis, but an article published on SVT’s official website for Melodifestivalen. What we would like to add is how striking the differences in voting between the different ages are and how they look in the new way of voting at Melodifestivalen, which has been used for the last two years.

A song that audiences under the age of 15 rank 11th in 12 competing songs, is 1st in all ages over 44!

However, the Mamas  were the winners of the Melodifestivalen 2020, with voting system that was known to everyone from the beginning.

Let’s enjoy Kingdom Come once again and wish Anna a try again, with an equally beautiful song:

Sweden: “I don’t know if I wanted to go to Eurovision”, Dotter says

The big favorite of yesterday’s Melodifestivalen final was Dotter, who for one point only failed to beat the Mamas. In her statements shortly after the end of the night, she said how happy she was about the love she received herself as well as her song, but also about her uncertainty about whether she was ready for the Eurovision contest. Similar statements were made by Anna Bergendahl, who finished third.

Neither the public nor the committees could decide yesterday which of the two should represent Sweden at Eurovision 2020. The jury scored 65 points for Dotter and Mamas and the public gave them 71 and 72 points respectively.

For the story, it is worth noting that Dotter would win even in the tie, since she had received ten more than the Mamas in the committee (12 were equal).

“I got some minor points from international committees. I was relieved that I didn’t win. I don’t know if I wanted to go to Eurovision. The Mamas deserved it and wanted it more”.

Dotter

Anna Bergendahl‘s statements that took third place at this year’s Melodifestivalen also moved at a similar wavelength.

“It’s hard to describe my feelings right now. I’m so grateful for third place. I won so many this year. I’m so happy for the Mamas. As a listener, I would vote for their song. It’s a great song”.

Anna Bergendahl

The bets, however, did not welcome the Mamas ‘victory very warmly, as Sweden, after many years, is  in the eighth position of winning the contest, the day before the leaders’ meeting at the end of the national finals season.
