Spain: “SloMo was actually meant for Jennifer Lopez”!

It may sound like it was written in Seville, Madrid or Barcelona, but in fact this year’s Spanish entry in the Eurovision Song Contest was created in Velsen-Noord, a small town in the north of the Netherlands. Dutch producer Arjen Thonen reveals that he actually composed Chanel’s SloMo for Jennifer Lopez, but when the Latin star didn’t respond, the song found its way to Turin.

Even those who don’t know the story behind SloMo are likely to think of Jennifer Lopez when watching the video clip. Chanel Terrero‘s dance moves, energy and upbeat vibe seem to be quite similar to various songs that JLo has released from time to time.

Beeld uit de videoclip van SloMo, de Spaanse inzending voor het Eurovisie Songfestival. Zangeres Chanel zingt het lied dat is gemaakt door de Nederlandse producer Arjen Thonen.

Thonen, with more than ten years of experience in the music industry, composed a remix for the Black Eyed PeasPump It, which led to the development of a friendly relationship between himself and the band’s drummer Keith Harris, who is also a producer.

Harris knew that Jennifer Lopez was looking for some new material and asked Thonen to submit a proposal.

“I was in the studio in the middle of the summer and by the end of the day I was kind of having a song that wasn’t exactly in Jennifer Lopez’s style. Then, I spontaneously kept going all night and that’s how SloMo came out.”

The song, in lyrics by Canadian singer Maggie Szabo, was sent via Keith Harris to the US, but there was no reaction from JLo’s team. The song was “left on the shelf”, while Thonen focused on other productions.

“Keith suddenly sent me an email saying that they were looking for a Jennifer-Lopez-like song in Spain to compete at Benidorm Fest. Of course he’s American, so he added: “In case you don’t know about the competition, it’s the biggest music event in Europe. I would do it.””

Producer Arjen Thonen, die het nummer SloMo van zangeres Chanel maakte.

The song was accepted, with new Spanish lyrics, and so Thonen watched the Benidorm Fest final on 29 January, where of course he was thrilled to see Chanel with SloMo officially becoming Spain’s representative for Turin.

SloMo has already surpassed 6 million streams on Spotify and is doing quite well with the bookmakers respectively as it is currently standing in eighth place.

“I am very happy that this song ended up being part of such a beautiful event”

Will the JLo team regret seeing Chanel in Turin? Will JLo herself ever learn the story behind this song?

Spain: The detailed results of Benidorm Fest 2022 have been published!

The detailed results of Benidorm Fest 2022, the national final of Spain, were announced by RTVE a while ago. As you will see below, the winner, Chanel, gathered less than 4% of the public vote.

On the other hand, the entry that ended up in second place overall won the televoting, gathering 70.75% of the votes among 8 participants.

Widespread reactions have erupted in Spain, as Galician political parties have already stated that they will raise the issue in the House of Representatives. Tanxugueiras who won the public vote are from Galicia and sung a song in Galician.

Complaints about possible conflict of interest of the judges are also serious, as members of the jury seem to have worked in the past with Chanel, the winner of the jury and Benidorm Fest overall.

On the other hand, the Galician telecommunications provider Toxo Telecom seems to have contributed to the Tanxugueiras’ huge lead in the public vote, allowing its customers to vote for the Tanxugueiras once for free.

She clarified that RTVE will continue to work to resolve any errors that may have occurred or even to review or update the voting system for the next Benidorm Fest.

She concluded by thanking the artists who participated in Benidorm Fest and encouraging all singers and composers to participate next year, “because Benidorm Fest brings only good things”, as the high ratings were to the benefit of all participants.

Spain: Luna Ki explains what made her withdraw from Benidorm Fest!

As we have already informed you in a previous article, Luna Ki withdrew, just yesterday, from the Spanish Final. Today she posted a video, on her YouTube channel, in which she explains the reasons why she was finally forced to withdraw.

Already from the first seconds of the video, the singer points out that the reason why she will not be able to be part of the Benidorm Fest is

“Europe will finally not allow the use of autotune, something we have been discussing with the Spanish broadcaster for a long time and we have really done everything we needed to.”

She also says

“Despite all the efforts of the Spanish delegation, I will not be able to give my performance. I could make up excuses by saying that I am withdrawing for a health issue, but I won’t, because for me, both as an artist and as a human being, the truth is of primary importance. I will never stop defending my truth and above all the truth of my art.”

On the point where Luna refers to the “truth of her art,” she explains, later on, that it’s very important for her to respect the way she writes her songs, which is why she “would rather defend them by telling the truth than just making an excuse.”

“Yes, I could take part in Benidorm Fest and in case I won I would have about 3 months to change the song and remove the autotune. I know there are many people who will say I can’t sing without it. I honestly tell you that Luna can sing. But Luna Ki can not.”

The singer goes on to say “many will ask ‘Then why don’t you sing without autotune?’ and the truth is that many people close to me ask me the same. It doesn’t seem like a big deal to them.”

“For me autotune is part of the aesthetics of the song and not just a technical support. Try to think of a song that is written on an electric guitar and is suddenly forced to be played by an acoustic one. It would be pointless. Its aesthetic, rhythm and dynamics would be lost. I don’t want something like that to happen to my song.”

In the video Luna goes on to urge the officials to reconsider banning autotune at Eurovision as “it’s a singing competition, not a voice one like, for example, The Voice” and through this she hopes to see more electronic songs on similar big stages in the future.

She also extends her heartfelt thanks to Spanish broadcaster, RTVE, and all those who supported her and believed in her, while asking her listeners to support the other participants in the national final regardless of the result.

Finally, she elaborates on how she experienced the whole situation from the day she learned that she would not be able to participate, explaining that the best way she could convey her thoughts to the audience unchanged is through this video. At the same time, she verifies the rumours of creating a video clip for “Voy a morir” in which it is very likely that she will be wearing the clothes she was going to wear at Benidorm Fest!
