Tone Sekelius: “After competing with ‘My Way’ people see me more as an artist rather than an influencer” | Exclusive interview!

Tone Sekelius debuted last year at Melodifestivalen 2022 by placing fifth , also earned a spot in the hearts of die-hard Melodifestivalen fans.

For a second year in a row she hopes to be selected to represent Sweden , with the song ” Rhythm of my Show ” which is one of the favorites to qualify to the final, out of all seven competing numbers of the Swedish national selection procedure.

Eurovisionfun is in Gothenburg and Tone spoke exclusively to Andreas Papagiannakis, just a few hours before competing in the first heat. She commented on her appearance this year, the impact that her participation last year has had on her life and about the Swedish representative of 2022, Cornelia Jakobs!

She started by commenting on her first rehearsal experience this year and jokes about the rehearsal being so early in the morning that she just woke up and had to immediately start singing:

“This year’s number has a lot of singing and dancing and I have to stay focused, because the moment I start overanalyzing what’s going on, that’s when I forget what I need to do next. I have to keep in mind that I know what to do, I know the choreography, I know my song and I just have to have fun on stage!”

When asked how much of an impact her participation at Melodifestivalen 2022 has had on her life, she commented:

“It was an unforgettable experience. Since then I have done much music and the people have already started to see me more as an artist rather than an influencer who just makes music! Last year I was afraid that people wouldn’t see me as an artist, but that didn’t happen and that makes me very happy!”

She also commented on her getting awarded as the LGBT person of the year at the QX Gaygala 2022 , stating:

“I am excited, I felt very honored! I have left my mark on the community and the things I do move the community forward. This was my goal from the very first moment I was on the internet, not just to exist, but to have an impact on others!”

About her song she co-wrote among others with Anderz Wrethov she said:

“This year I wanted to make an uptempo song with party vibes, with attitude but at the same time be still approachabe make people want to party with me. Textwise, it’s about confidence, loving yourself and dancing to the ‘rhythm of your show’!”

Regarding her staging, she told us that regarding the rehearsals there will be some minor changes and improvements until her televised appearance, this Saturday:

“Today at my first rehearsal, it was the first time I actually saw how my number would look like on TV. We figured out it’s maybe a bit too dark. So we’ll make some changes and improvements by adding more light to it. From the beginning we aimed to give viewers the feeling of clubbing, we are very close to what we initially had in mind with the creative team!”

She is very happy that Melodifestivalen is back on tour and that she will perform in Gothenburg :

“Last year I was supposed to be competing in Gothenburg, but as you said, all the shows had to take place in Stockholm. This year is a different experience, last year I was in my hometown, this year we are all together hanging out in a Mellobubble . I am very happy to sing for the people in Gothenburg, I have been told many good comments about them!”

Last year’s representative of Sweden Cornelia Jakobs is gonna appear as a guest in the first heat, Tone jokingly told us:

“There is no rivalry! (laughs) I love her as an artist, she’s an icon, I love her song and I’m glad she’s back. Her year was great, it was great that I got to see all of her performance backstage and then I saw it all happen on the Eurovision stage!”

Regarding this year’s contestants of the first heat, she commented:

“I haven’t listened to all of the songs. I got to see the performances of Loulou Lamotte and Rejhan which I liked a lot. But I still haven’t listened to them all and at Melodifestivalen, you know, you can’t predict who’s going to win, who’s going to qualify just by ones name!”

Eurovision 2022: Sweden’s First Rehearsal!

Today is the fourth day of rehearsals in Turin and now it’s the turn of the countries that are competing in the second half of the Second Semi Final to take over the stage!

Next up on stage for their first rehearsal is Sweden and Cornelia Jakobs with the song “Hold Me Closer“.

Who is Cornelia Jakobs?

Cornelia is a singer, songwriter, and this year’s winner of Melodifestivalen. Jakobs began her recording career as part of the RedOne-produced girl band Love Generation, who released their self-titled debut in the summer of 2010. Sadly, the group lasted just three singles in the fickle world of pop.

Undeterred, Cornelia launched a solo career in 2018, and has been busy releasing singles, performing to sell out crowds across the country, and working on her first album.

With a father who is a famous rockstar in Sweden, and a grandmother who is a composer, music has always been a fundamental part of this pop star’s life.

The Rehearsal

Cornelia’s staging has remained the same as it was in Melodifestivalen. The same circular projection screen prop is used, plus she wears the same outfit and is barefoot on stage.

Below you can watch a small clip from Sweden’s first rehearsal from Tik Tok:

Her moves and the camerawork are intuitive, making it one hell of an intimate and intense performance.

The second Swedish rehearsal will be held on the 6th of May, when we will know how things will appear on screen for the Swedish entry.

Christer Björkman: “Sweden’s victory would make me come back on producing Eurovision”!

Former Eurovision producer Christer Björkman has admitted that a Swedish victory in next month’s competition will tempt him to return to Europe.

Björkman is currently in the US producing the American Song Contest.

Speaking in an exclusive interview a few days after the second qualifying round of the American Song Contest, Björkman said that if Cornelia Jakobs  succeeds and wins this year’s Eurovision, he will be tempted to return as a producer.

You know what?  This shit is a poison. You can never get rid of it. Once you have it in your body it’s there to stay and you always have to fight it. It’s like an addiction. So would I be tempted? Yes, of course I would be tempted. I love to produce Eurovision. I’ve produced the contest five times and the full show twice so bring it on.

Björkman was a producer for the first time at Eurovision in 2013 , when the competition was hosted in Malmö after Loreen’s victory. He returned in 2016 when the competition was hosted in  Stockholm , Sweden.

Thoughts on Melfest without Christer Björkman

In addition to his Eurovision production experience, Björkman was also in charge of Sweden’s Melodifestivalen for two decades , one of the biggest national finals for the Eurovision Song Contest.

He left from his role as a producer in 2021 , where the competition was held without an audience due to the pandemic.

When he was asked about this year’s Melfest , he said:

I liked the mix of songs. I think it was a brilliant selection when we got to the final. It had a great variety. It had three songs in Swedish which was really good. It was not that they felt that they were there only because they were Swedish. They were actually very, very good. I think they did a really good job. They had some troubles along the way, especially with the voting but that’s technical. Shit happens. That would’ve happened even if I was there so there’s no judgement in that. I think it was good. I love the winner. I really do. I think she’s so good.

Sweden: Detailed results of Melodifestivalen 2022 released!

The SVT (Swedish public television) released the detailed results of Melodifestivalen 2022. As you will see below, the age categories did not affect the results, which were in line with the absolute number of votes except for the semi-final of the second chance, where two songs would not have qualified for the final if this system was not implemented.

There are two things worth mentioning. The first one is that Anders Bagge had about half a million more votes than the winner Cornelia Jakobs. The second is that Anna Bergendahl and Cazzi Opeia, despite collecting fewer votes in the semifinal of the second chance than Alvaro Estrella and Lisa Miskovsky respectively, got the ticket for the final as based on the age categories they got higher amount of points. Anna Bergendahl even had almost 200,000 votes less than Alvaro Estrella and despite of that was the one who had more points in the age categories.

Despite her second place in the public voting, Cornelia Jakobs will represent Sweden at Eurovision 2022, with the song Hold Me Closer. Sweden participates in the second semifinal and will appear in the second half.

Sweden: Cornelia Jakobs and Robin Bengtsson are the two direct finalists of the first semi-final of Melodifestivalen 2022!

A while ago, Melodifestivalen 2022, probably your favourite national selection process of the entire list of participating countries in the Eurovision Song Contest, started off with its first semi-final show.

The show

Oscar Zia was the host of the night and as we already know, all the shows for the national selection procedure of the Swedish representative for this year’s contest in Turin will take place exclusively in Stockholm. The first semi-final took place at The Avicii Arena, one of Stockholm’s most iconic buildings which is also the largest spherical building in the world.

The first semi-final performers

  • Malou Prytz – “Bananas

  • Theoz – “Som du vill

  • Shirley Clamp – “Let There Be Angels

  • Omar Rudberg – “Moving Like That

  • Danne Stråhed – “Hallabaloo

  • Cornelia Jakobs – “Hold Me Closer

Cornelia Jakobs

  • Robin Bengtsson – “Innocent Love

The new voting system

There will be two voting rounds. In each round, each viewer gets to vote five times at the most (five hearts). From this year an on, after all seven performances in each semi-final, SVT will announce the artist that received the most overall votes, both through the app and by phone, irrespective of the viewer age-bands.

The remaining six contestants, move on to the second voting round. The voters can then give each of the remaining songs five hearts at the most, same way like the first voting round. At the second voting round, the votes received during the first voting round also count against the total of votes received.

The results of the second voting round are determined by the system of the eight age-bands: 3–9 years old, 10–15years old, 16–29 years old, 30–44 years old, 45–59 years old, 60–74 years old, over 75, as well as the televotes.

All in all, we will have two direct qualifiers, one determined from the first voting round and one from the second voting round and also two qualifiers for the fifth semi-final, also from the second voting round.

The results

First voting round

  • First voting round winner: Cornelia Jakobs with the songHold Me Closer

Second voting round

Due to some technical issues, Oscar informed us that the viewers will not be able to vote from the Melodifestivalen dedicated smartphone app and the winners of both voting rounds will be determined by the televotes, solely.

  • The two qualifiers to the fifth semi-final are: Danne Stråhed with the song “Hallabaloo and THEOZ with the song “Som Du Vill

The verdict

The two direct qualifiers are Cornelia Jakobs with the song “Hold Me Closer” and Robin Bengtsson with the song “Innocent Love” and we will get to see them perform their songs live, on the 12th of March, when the finals will take place at Friends Arena. Starting from 2022, there will not be a winning performance of the two finalists anymore, as the TV time now fills up with the announcement of the results.

Those that qualified to the fifth semi-final, that replaced the second chance show in the new format of Melodifestivalen, were Danne Stråhed with the song “Hallabaloo”  and THEOZ with the song “Som Du Vill“.

Sadly Malou Prytz, Omar Rudberg and Shirley Clamp didn’t manage to qualify to either the fifth semi-final or the finals of Melodifestivalen.

See you next Saturday, after the second-semi final, when you will have the chance to be informed in detail about the results, as soon as they are announced on TV!
