Cyprus: A 62% viewing rate for the Eurovision 2023 Grand Final!

The final of the 67th Eurovision Song Contest in Cyprus scored significant viewing figures. 61,63% on average tuned in to RIK1 to watch Andrew Lambrou‘s effort in Liverpool.

In contrast to ERT, which this year recorded the second lowest ratings in its history since 2001, RIK’s ratings reached the top of the scale. 61.63% on average, while at the time of the results it even climbed to an impressive 82.3%! It is one of the highest ratings for the competition in Cyprus right after of course 2018, the year of Eleni Foureira.

The commentary of Melina Karageorgiou and Alexandros Taramountas, gathered only positive comments from the viewers, while there were many Greeks who preferred to watch the competition through the RIK frequency, giving a vote of confidence to the Cypriot public television duo, who for the second consecutive year undertake the commentary.

RIK has already started planning for next year’s Eurovision and in the next few days we will probably have the official announcements. You can read more about this in our exclusive article.

Cyprus this year was represented by Andrew Lambrou with the song “Break A Broken Heart”, taking the 12th place in the Grand Final with a total of 126 points.

An episode will be broadcast daily in the afternoon, with scenes from the academy. The program will be marked as suitable for all. So don’t expect to see much of their daily life, like a regular reality show. Sixteen artists will be chosen for the music academy, with one of the artists leaving each week in the live show. Discussions have already began with famous artists to be a member of the jury. One of them is Anna Vissi, the Greek Representative when Greece hosted the contest back in 2006.

At the end of this month, people of the national broadcaster will be in Athens to formalize the concept. Afterwards, there will be a relevant trailer calling for artists who would like to participate on the talent show and represent Cyprus in the song contest.

The preparations on Liverpool for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest are on fire and it’s now a wrap for the 6th day of the technical rehearsals. After their first technical rehearsals, the representatives of the 11 remaining acts participating in the 2nd Semifinal on May 11, took the stage of the M&S Bank Arena for their second rehearsals.

About the first 5 countries from SemiFinal 2 that had their second rehearsals yesterday:

The second rehearsals gave the opportunity to the delegations to fix any mistakes spotted on the first rehearsals and help the artists feel more safe and familiar with the Eurovision big stage.

Because accredited journalists are not allowed to watch both the first and second rehearsals this year, we have very little information about what this year’s artists have prepared for the Eurovision stage. EBU has just uploaded through the official Eurovision channel in YouTube a recap of today’s rehearsals. More specifically, we will have the chance to watch exclusive TV footage of today’s rehearsals.

The countries that had their second rehearsals today were the following:

  1. Cyprus
  2. Iceland
  3. Greece
  4. Poland
  5. Slovenia
  6. Georgia
  7. San Marino
  8. Austria
  9. Albania

Eurovision 2023: Cyprus’ First Rehearsal!

Last but definitely not least for today’s rehearsals is Andrew Lambrou with his song “Break A Broken Heart” representing Cyprus!

But who is Andrew Lambrou ?

Andrew Lambrou was born in Sydney, Australia and he is of Greek-Cypriot descent. Although he is just 24 years old his presence on TikTok is spectacular, since his profile on this social platform has gathered more than 700,000 followers.

He started to play music at the age of 5, when he was enrolled at the music school of AMS where he learned how to play the piano. One of his talents was his capabiity of listening to a song and then playing it on his own by heart. Soon he realized that he had to fulfill his musical destiny after having already won the first place in a competition singing the song “Doh A Deer”, still at the age of five. His own parents encouraged his inclination towards music throughout his life, while he attended musical classes at “LaVoce” Music School, where Marc Villagra was his vocal coach.

Andrew Lambrou currently lives in Sydney, Australia where he composes and performs his own songs, while he has also taken part in “The X Fctor of Australia”, “Australia’s Got Talent” and “The Voice of Australia”.

The rehearsal

Inspired by the elements of the earth, from the abyss to the catharic waters of the waterfall, we end up to lava and fire for a rebirth.

This is a great way to end what has been a brilliant second day of rehearsals. Break A Broken Heart is a powerful, heartfelt ballad with a marching drumbeat that’s vibrating through the Liverpool Arena floor – Andrew’s vocal is sublime, and there’s something electrifying about the way this song builds from the first big note to an even bigger finish. The LED backdrop transitions from waterfall to flames, and the whole thing is a massive Monday afternoon MOOD. Surely there’s some pyro incoming?

Cyprus has floor smoke AND four banks of flames – the first real flames of the contest!

Cyprus: “I’m gonna play with fire” said Andrew!

With the first technical rehearsals for the 37 participating countries starting today, EurovisionFun is here covering every rehearsal and providing you with information about everything that is going on in Liverpool.

Our YouTube live videos are also back and in today’s live video we had a special guest. It was no other than Andrew Lambrou, this year’s Cypriot representative.

Check out what Andrew Lambrou shared with us:

I wanna start of just by saying a big “Thank you!” to you guys for the support you have been giving me throughout this whole process. It really does mean a lot to me and those things shine through. All the positivity around me means so much. I know you have been doing a lot and I appreciate all the work that you put in.

I’m feeling very good! I’m excited for tomorrow! Tomorrow is the day I’ve been waiting for a very long time. I get to see everything put together on the stage and I just can’t wait and I’m hoping that the world enjoys it too.

Can you tell anything about tomorrow?

I can say one thing to you…We’re gonna be playing with fire!

We have heard that it will be really impressive.

Yes, this is the goal. We want to bring everything to life and I want this to be a special moment to everyone, including myself and for Cyprus and for all Eurovision fans

So what’s the goal?

The goal.. I’ll be honest with you. We know that Eurovision is about uniting the world. It always does. The slogan this year is “United By Music”.It’s a competition, but my goal is to go out there and give absolutely everything, to perform from here, to perform with meaning and whatever will be after that will be. I’m just focused on walking off that stage and feeling proud of myself and hoping that everyone can feel that sense of proudness too.

One last question! Will Australia give 12 points to Andrew this year?

We gonna have to wait and see. But I must say I’m also feeling a lot from Australia too, which is super special to me. And we’ll find out soon.

In the end, we wished the Cypriot representative together with the audience watching the live show the best of luck, to make all Greeks proud with his performance.

In the video below you can watch the short interview to Andrew Lambrou from 18:26.

Tomorrow takes place the first rehearsal of Cyprus, and we will find out what the Cypriot delegation had been preparing all those months. Cyprus competes from spot number 6 of the Second Semi-Final on 11th of May.
