Eurovision 2023: £55m profit for Liverpool!

According to the official announcements of the city of Liverpool, during Eurovision 2023 the economy had a revenue of £55 million. Twice as much as they originally estimated.

473,000 people visited Liverpool during the week of Eurovision Song Contest, leaving at the local economy (in cafes, bars, hotels, restaurants, shops) approximately £55 million.

Both the visitors, as well as the financial gains for Liverpool, were more than the competent bodies were expecting from the beginning. Council chairman Liam Robinson said the figures speak for themselves, adding:

Jobs were created, local businesses were on the receiving end of a much-needed boost and hundreds of thousands of people came to the city, had a great time and are more than likely to return again!

The Mayor of Liverpool, Steve Rotheram, pointed out that the city had given fans, whether watching in person or on TV, “a Eurovision they will never forget” and that it was “a vital shot in the arm for our local economy”.

Culture Minister Stuart Andrew noted: “This research demonstrates the positive impact of hosting major events and I hope that we can continue to build on this success.”

Liverpool was the first city in the United Kingdom to host Eurovision Song Contest after 25 years, with the main shows being held at M&S Bank Arena.

After Loreen’s win, Sweden will host next year’s contest at Malmö!

Eurovision 2023 United Kingdom: Host city Liverpool honored with Unesco music city award!

Liverpool, the host city of this year’s Eurovision,is the recipient of its first ever Unesco Music City Award.

The Liverpool Unesco City of Music Award is attributed to the team behind this year’s Song Contest, whose contribution left an indelible footprint upon the local music scene and culture.

The host broadcaster BBC and the events’ organizers were given the award at a ceremony at Liverpool Town Hall, with the Grand Final being reportedly the most-watched Grand Final in the UK’s history ever.

Liverpool’s cabinet member for culture, Harry Doyle, said:

“We were never in doubt that the BBC would stage an incredible show at the arena – and the record-breaking viewing figures are testament to their achievements – but what is really special is how they, and the EBU, embraced the city, they got to know our story and our heritage and they helped us showcase the very best of Liverpool to the world.”

Mayor of Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, added:

“Home to more number one hits than anywhere else, it’s safe to say that Liverpool wouldn’t be Liverpool without music – and music wouldn’t be music without Liverpool. While few places can claim to have made such an impact on world music as we have, I think the real reason we came out top in the race to host Eurovision was because, quite simply, nowhere else can throw a party quite like us.”

Eurovision 2023: Today the meeting of the heads of delegation in Liverpool!

Both with the physical presence and with the help of the use of technology, the meeting of the heads of delegation is taking place today. The 37 countries are invited to submit to the hosts, the video clips of their participation, as well as the envelope with the instructions for their stage presentation. Any changes that participants wish to make from this date onwards must be approved by the competition’s Reference Group.

Usually, at the meeting of the heads of delegations, the draw for the order of appearance of the hosting country is also held. It remains to be seen whether this year’s draw will include both Ukraine and the UK, as the BBC is co-hosting in Liverpool along with UA:PBC on behalf of Ukraine.

Today we will also learn the song of Azerbaijan, with the only countries that have not yet announced their participation being Armenia (on 15th of March it will reveal its participation) and Georgia (still unknown when the announcement will be made).

United Kingdom: All Eurovision 2023 Shows to be Broadcast through BBC One!

Through its announcement for the hosting city for Eurovision 2023, BBC has also revealed that its main channel, BBC One, is going to broadcast all three Eurovision shows for the first time ever.

Since their introduction in 2004 until 2015, the Semi-Finals along with the Grand Final were broadcast through BBC Three, then moved to BBC Four in 2021 and returned back to BBC Three in 2022. Usually the ratings for the Semi-Finals vary between 500,000-600,000 viewers, but this year those figures are expected to substantially increase due to the hosting of the contest in the United Kingdom.

The 67th Eurovision Song Contest is going to be held in Liverpool on May 9th, 11th and 13th. Due to the ongoing war situation in Ukraine, it’s the first time since 1980 that the contest isn’t going to be held by the previous winning nation.

Kalush Orchestra won Eurovision 2022 with the song “Stefania” and achieved a televoting points record, marking the third Ukrainian victory in the contest.
