Malta: MESC 2023 Third Quarter Final tonight!

The process of selecting Malta‘s representative for Eurovision 2023 continues tonight, as the third qualifying round of the Maltese national selection will take place.

The Mediterranean country is choosing for the second year in a row the format of a national final in order to decide on the artist who will represent it at the Eurovision Song Contest. Forty artists are vying to represent Malta through five shows: three quarter-finals, one semi-final and the grand final.

Tonight concludes the quarter-final stage, where the 24 semi-finalists will be announced at the end of the evening. We remind you that in the first two quarter-finals of the two previous weeks, the names of the artists who got the “ticket” for next Friday’s semi-final were not announced.

Tonight’s Participants

Fourteen artists compete in tonight’s third MESC 2023 quarter-final, vying for one of eight “tickets” to appear in the semi-final stage of the Maltese national selection. These artists are:

  2. Bradley Debono – “Blackout”
  3. Cheryl Balzan – “La La Land”
  4. Chris Grech – “Indescribable”
  5. Dominic and Anna “Whatever Wind May Blow”
  6. Giada “I Depend on You”
  7. Greta Tude – “Sound of My Stilettos”
  8. Jake – “Love You Like That”
  9. James Louis “Dream”
  10. Jessika – “Unapologetic”
  11. John Galea – “Trailblazer”
  12. Maria Christina – “Our Flame”
  13. Ryan Hili – “In the Silence”
  14. Stefan “Heartbreaker”

The decision on the eight contestants to continue their journey to MESC 2023 will be made jointly by the Maltese public and a panel of judges.

The three qualifying rounds of MESC 2023 are presented by Ryan and Josmar.

Until we know who will represent Malta at Eurovision 2023, let’s remember the country’s participation in last year’s competition. Last year’s MESC winner was Emma Muscat with “Out of Sight”. She finally represented Malta at Eurovision 2022 with the song “I Am what I Am” without being able to qualify for the Grand Final finishing in 16th place in the second semi-final with 47 points:

Malta: Aidan disqualified from MESC 2023!

Sad news for Aidan, one of the favourites to win MESC 2023!

As it seems, the singer disqualified from Maltese National Final with his song “Regina” and he will no longer take part in MESC. According to TVMNews, the site has contacted with the producers of the national final and has been informed that Aidan broke the rules of the festival. Specifically, Aidan has been disqualified after breaching rules 5.3 and 5.6 of the competition regarding posting to social media.

Rule 5.6 exactly states:

“The engagement of marketing personnel, marketing officials, marketing companies or the engagement into some sort of marketing or promotional campaign or activity by the artists to promote themselves, the song, their participation, or in some way to influence the public vote is strictly prohibited. The publication of any social media post, promotion material, interviews or media presence/exposure from the announcement of the quarter finalist’s onwards is also strictly prohibited. Any breach of this clause will lead to automatic disqualification”

Aidan came second in MESC 2022 with this song “Ritmu” which was very loved from many Eurofans.

Malta: MESC 2023 Second Qualifying Round Tonight!

The time to learn Malta’s song for Eurovision 2023 is here! For the second year in a row, the island country is using the format of a national final and is organizing MESC 2023, through which they are going to select their representative for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest.

40 artists are going to take part in Malta’s selection process for Eurovision 2023. Five shows in total, three qualifying rounds, one semi-final and the Grand Final, will select the artist and the song that is going to represent Malta in Liverpool.

The hosts of the three qualifying rounds of MESC 2023 will be Ryan and Josmar.

The first Qualifying round took place last Saturday, but without announcing the names of the artists advancing to the semi-final. The 24 artists to take part in the semi-final, will be announced after the end of the third qualifying round.

The second qualifying round of MESC 2023 will be broadcasted at 21:00 CET. You can watch it through the live broadcast of TVM’s official website, by clicking HERE.

It’s worth mentioning that the Maltese public television hasn’t announced the running order of the qualifying round.

It’s worth mentioning that the Maltese public television hasn’t announced the full running order, but instead, they have revealed only the first song of the nigh and that is “Tik Tok” by Haley.

Malta: PBS announces changes in MESC’s format | This is the allocation of the artists in the Quarter-Finals!

Malta’s national final for this year seems to change all the time, as MESC 2023 format is changing for yet another time. About two months ago, the Maltese public broadcaster, PBS, announced that they wanted to introduce to the public more artists through the national final and so, they added four qualifying rounds to the contest.

In an announcement earlier today, the channel revealed their decision to broadcast only three of the four programmed qualifying rounds with 13 competitors in the first two and 14 in the third.

What is more, the allocation of the 40 artists in the three qualifying rounds was also announced:

First Quarter-Final

Malta’s public television, TVM, has decided to hold a national final to select its entry for Eurovision 2023. Thus, MESC is back for another year.

We already know the 40 artists and songwriters that will compete in the MESC 2023 semi-finals.

A short while ago, snippets of the songs that will compete for the country’s representation in Liverpool were revealed through Malta’s social media for Eurovision.

Among them, we find, first of all, Brooke who has tried to represent the country in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and although the fanatics of the competition strongly supported her, she did not manage to succeed. Two contestants of last year’s MESC, MATT BLXCK and Aidan are back, while we also have three past representatives, Fabrizio Faniello (Malta 2001 and 2006), Jessica (San Marino 2018) as well as Eliana Gomez Blanco who represented her country at Junior Eurovision 2019.

The 24 songs that will qualify for the semi-final will be selected from four heats through public and jury voting. In the Semi-Final, the 16 finalists will be selected to compete in the Grand Final.

Through a draw, it was determined that the first song that will be featured in the first heat is Hailey‘s “Tik Tok“, while the last song to compete in the fourth heat will be Maria Cristina‘s “Our Flame“.

Malta: Changes announced for MESC 2023!

According to an announcement by Maltese broadcaster PBS, in a meeting, which was attended by the 40 artists who will compete at MESC 2023, changes to the format of the national final were discussed, including the introduction of quarter-finals.

PBS Executive Chairman Mark Sammut stated that these changes are being made to give more Maltese singers the opportunity to showcase their talent at this festival which year after year attracts a bigger audience.

The 24 songs that will advance to the Semi-Final will be selected from four Quarter-Finals through public and jury voting. From the Semi-Final 16 acts will advance to the Grand Final, where they will compete to represent Malta at the 67th Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, UK.

It was also announced that Paul Giordimaina, Mike Spiteri, Ludwig Galea and Moira Stafrace will act as consultants in the selection, offering support to the participants.

Through a draw, it was determined that the song that will appear in the first place of the first Quarter-Final is Hailey’s Tik Tok, while Maria Cristina will compete last in the fourth Quarter-Final with Our Flame.

The Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2023 program is as follows:

Among them we find Brooke who has tried to represent the country in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and was a fan favourite. Also two last year’s MESC participants, MATT BLXCK as well as Aidan, who finished second to Emma Muscat. Finally, we have four past representatives, Fabrizio Faniello (Malta 2001 and 2006), Jessika (San Marino 2018), Francesca Scibberas (Malta Junior Eurovision 2009) as well as Eliana Gomez Blanco who represented her country at Junior Eurovision 2019.

Malta last year lost their qualification streak with I Am What I Am and Emma Muscat finishing 16th in last year’s second semi-final. You can remember her appearance below:

Malta: Submission window for MESC 2023 is now open!

Earlier today PBS, Malta’s national broadcaster, opened the submission window for the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2023 (MESC).

With the submission window for the MESC now open those interested in representing Malta in the contest must apply on the official PBS Eurovision site. Some rules of the selection are as follows:

  • All performers must be at least 16 years old by May 2023.
  • Performers must have Maltese nationality while the Songwriters and composers can be of any nationality.
  • An artist may submit multiple songs to the selection.
  • Songs must not have been released or publicly performed before October 15 2022.
  • Songs must not be longer than three minutes.

Through the selection process, a jury will choose the 40 songs that will compete at Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2023. In each quarterfinals, 10 songs will compete with 6 of them being able to progress through the Semi-Final. At all the shows, the voting will consist of both jury voting and public televote.
