Norway: Ten countries on the MGP jury

MGP leader Stig Karlsen was invited to escNorge. There he revealed more details about Saturday’s Grand Final and the voting.

50 people on the jury

This year, the jury returns to MGP. Saturday’s voting will be quite similar to what we are used to at Eurovision. Initially, ten countries will vote. Each of the countries is represented by a jury consisting of five people from the music industry.

They will first give their scores and rank from 1 to 9. As we know, there are nine songs in the final. These countries have not yet been announced.

When the jury’s scores are given, the votes of the country’s public will be added to the score as in Eurovision. More details on the graphics and scoring system will be revealed on Saturday.

Also, Stig Karlsen said that the song presentations will be largely the same as the semi-finals, but that they will obviously have more light as we will be in a bigger arena and differences in camera angles that will show the huge audience of 8,500 spectators.

Norway: NRK adds Auto-Tune in Melodi Grand Prix 2023!

For the first time in Melodi Grand Prix’s history, NRK gives to its contestants, the chance to compete without the fear of not being perfect vocally, as they are going to allow the use of Auto-Tune, a virtual tool that corrects the wrong tunes and lets the singer be in-tune.

If for example, Stig van Eijk, Kate Gulbrandsen or Atle Pettersen lose their tune, the tool will make the required adjustment to take the note to the necessary tune.

This is what NRK’s Melodi GRand Prix general, Stig Karlsen said:

“MGP follows the development of the concert industry and music shows on TV, by allowing tuning of the lead vocal for MGP 2023”

Auto-Tune is a common production tool, especially in Hip-Hop and R&B music, from Cher’s “Believe” in 1998 to today’s Billie Eillish.

As of now, Auto-Tune is not allowed in the Eurovision Song Contest, but that does not change NRK’s decision to add it to the national final:

“But therefore it is absolutely essential that the artists we select for MGP deliver at a high level, even without tuning. In those cases where we do not know the artist’s performance level live, they are invited to an audition. We set high standards for the vocalists’ performance level, but will help to perfect the quality of the sound production through the use of tuning. This is done to give the audience a similarly solid sound experience as in the rest of the industry”

The director of Melodi Grand Prix in NRK, Stig Karlsen, adds that this is what corresponds to what has happened in other music productions in TV in recent years:

“MGP is one of the last remaining music productions on TV that will now use sound production tools of this type. Using Auto-Tune does not make anyone a skilled vocalist, Karlsen points out. A good vocalist must deliver on communication skills, power, rhythm and timing, empathy, attitude and timbre. A vocalist is also carried by the individual character of the voice. Auto-Tune is just one of several tools for correcting and optimizing the sound experience.”

Stig Karlsen believes that throug the many years of using Auto-Tune, the public has become more discerning with the listening experience and that they automatically get used to the vocals being corrected to their best form:

“MGP therefore sees itself as having to follow developments in order to deliver the product expected by the public in 2023.”

Will the winner of Melodi Grand Prix 2020, Ulrikke be in need of Auto-Tune, in next Saturday’s First semi-final?

Norway: Arianrhod Engebø and Staysman to present Melodi Grand Prix 2023!

Norwegian broadcaster NRK has revealed that Arian Engebø and Stian Thorbjørnsen will be the presenters of Melodi Grand Prix 2023.

Arian has many presentations to her name, having recently hosted this year’s VG-Lista Rådhusplassen. Engebø has also become a well-known NRK voice in recent years. Together with Nate Kuhunga, they have the radio program “StudioP3”. Stian “Staysman” Thorbjørnsen, has participated in the Norwegian selection, once in 2015 with “En godt stekt pizza”, and most recently in 2021 as part of Landeveiens helter.

So from “StudioP3” Stian, with a specially written song for the occasion, mentioned that he will be joined by the hostess of next year’s Melodi Grand Prix.

Staysman says he feels lucky to now be leading the competition alongside someone who is as excited about the concept as he is.

This means that  Kåre Magnus Bergh  will be out of the presenting role. He is the longest-serving MGP presenter – twice as many as Odd Grythe , who had six, from 1960 to 1965.

MGP will start on January 14th .

Melodi Grand Prix is expected to follow a similar format to previous years, with the contest consisting of several semi-finals and a final. All of the results are expected to be decided by public voting alone. Exact details on the format will be released in due course.

Subwoolfer represented Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 with “Give That Wolf a Banana”. They finished 10th in the Grand Final scoring 182 points.
