Eurovision 2023: France’s second rehearsal!

The next country to have its second rehearsal today is France with La Zarra and “ Évidemment

Who is La Zarra?

Fatima-Zahra Hafdi, known with her artist name La Zarra, was internally selected by France Télévisions to represent France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, making her the second Canadian singer to represent the country after Natasha St-Pier in 2001.

As a self-taught musician, La Zarra embodies the style and essence of iconic figures like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe, while also embracing the tragic sensibility reminiscent of Édith Piaf. Her breakthrough came in 2016 with the release of her debut single “Printemps blanc,” a collaboration with French rapper Niro. In 2021, her popularity soared with the success of the single “Tu t’en iras,” which received extensive airplay. This achievement led to her nomination for the NRJ Music Awards, one of the most prestigious music awards in France, in the category of Francophone Revelation of the Year. Adding to her accomplishments, La Zarra’s debut and currently only album, “Traîtrise,” further contributed to her rising fame.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public through eurovision.tv and the official social media accounts of the contest.

As we saw from the first rehearsal snippet, La Zarra is elevated on a shimmering platform adorned with sparkles, dressed in a form-fitting gown crafted entirely from black and red sequins. The ‘platform’ is actually a moving column five meters tall, draped in sparkly black fabric all the way to the floor. The fabric disappears to reveal a cylindrical column with a mirror-tiled top. At the end of the performance there is pyro and the french flag appears on the led wall behind La Zarra. This is very French, dramatic, very Eurovision, as the eurovision.tv blog live feed describes. And that’s why we are looking forward to see the full performance!

Tonight, after the completion of all the second rehearsals of the Big 6, a recap video will be released with 30 second snippets of the performances, giving us a glimpse of how the acts will look on stage.

France: the first details for La Zarra’s performance are revealed!

The first details about La Zarra’s performance in Liverpool have been revealed.  The Head of the French Delegation, Alexandra Redde-Amiel has spoken to the  podcast “12 Points – le Podcast qui décrypte l’Eurovision“ about La Zarra’s preparations for Eurovision and what we can expect to happen in May.

Here are some of the most important details we already know about it:

The Stage

According to the French head of delegation, La Zarra is having the last say when it comes to deciding what should be on stage or not.  France Télevisions is working with the singer to decide what to show in Liverpool.  However, during the creative process La Zarra gives her feedback on the ideas and what she wants to see.

A second revelation is that “there will be a cool prop” that will be in the center of the performance.  Another important revelation is that La Zarra will perform alone onstage.  According to Ms. Redde-Amiel the performance will not need a lot of people around La Zarra.  The main goal is to make the French representative stand out:

“I wanted something that was both a fashion and out of the box at the same time because that is her. She can be like Lady Gaga one moment and do something very simple the next.”

During the interview with the French head of delegation, there was time to address the elephant in the room: Sweden.  As most of the fans already know,  Sweden is the clear favourite according to the odds.  “Team France” has discussed their main competitor.  However, they feel confident that what we will see in Liverpool for La Zarra has enough potential to get the Eurovision crystal trophy in spite of the current odds.

“We are going to take a counter-stance which could be nice”.

France: Aiming for the victory in Eurovision 2023 – Announcements to be made soon!

With Junior Eurovision 2022 complete and France being the big winner, all eyes of France Télévisions are now on Eurovision 2023.

Although last July it was announced that the country will organize a national final for the selection of its participation, there have been no further announcements about the submission of entries, nor information about the selection process.

This time last year, the deadline for submitting entries had already closed, while at the end of 2020, we knew all twelve artists of Eurovision France: C’est vous qui décidez 2021.

Appearing on Radio Sud on Christmas Eve, France’s head of delegation for the competition, Alexandra Redde-Amiel, was asked about the country’s plans for the upcoming competition and also about whether the channel would opt for a renewed national final or an internal selection. Her answer was the following:

We focused so much on Eurovision Junior, while I was also involved with Eurovision for adults. I have a lot of great surprises that I will announce to you, not immediately but soon. We want to win Eurovision, so there are several issues. I’m going to take a few days off and I think that’s when my final decision will be made.

Alexandra Redde-Amiel declined to say more, simply repeating her desire to continue to “be proud” and boost the Eurovision brand in France. Above all, the head of the delegation confirms it loud and clear: France wants to win Eurovision. This is of course the reason for the country’s second Junior Eurovision victory, as well as Barbara Pravi’s second place in 2021.

As for 2022, France Télévisions, in addition to failing in viewership numbers (1.47 million viewers and 8.8% viewership), the channel had received mixed reviews regarding the quality of its selection (despite the 3,000 song submissions). Alvan & Ahez’s penultimate place in Turin’s Grand Final (France’s worst result since Eurovision 2005), however, hasn’t got the country’s hopes down for a future win.

With rumors swirling either of a renewed national final, or an internal selection with a well-known artist, France Télévisions is expected to make an announcement early in the new year.

In 2022, Alvan & Ahez represented France with the song “Fulenn”. They finished 24th in the Grand Final with 17 points.
