Eurovision 2023: Germany’s second rehearsal!

Good morning! Today is the seventh day of the Eurovision 2023 rehearsals and the Big 5 plus last year’s winner Ukraine, will have their second rehearsal at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool. You can find the schedule of today’s rehearsals here.

Germany is the first country to take the stage today and rehearse for the second time. The country is represented by Lord of the Lost and the song “Blood&Glitter“.

Who is Lord of the Lost?

Lord of the Lost is a band from Hamburg, Germany that has gained a significant following in Germany’s industrial rock scene. Initially started as a solo project by lead singer Chris Harms in 2007 the band released their debut single Dry the Rain and first album Fears in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Today, they have a total of eight albums in their discography, with their most recent four reaching the top 10 of the German charts. Their latest album, named after their Eurovision entry “Blood & Glitter”, quickly reached the number one spot on German charts just six days after pre-orders were made. Their recent European tour was sold out and after the contest, they will be supporting Iron Maiden on tour!

The rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public through eurovision.tv and the official social media accounts of the contest.

The stage performance is similar to the one in the national final but definitely upgraded. On stage there is a metal construction in a triangle form where 2 of the band members are placed higher than the rest, while red and black are the primary colors on the led screens. Flashing lights make the performance more impactful while pyro and red flames are used. Such a dynamic performance! Seems that Germany will not be on the last places of the leaderboard this year.

Tonight, after the completion of all the second rehearsals of the Big 6, a recap video will be released with 30 second snippets of the performances, giving us a glimpse of how the acts will look on stage.

Eurovision 2023: Germany’s First Rehearsal!

Today is the turn of the contest’s Big 5 to go on stage for their first rehearsals! The first Big 5 entry to take the stage is Lord of the Lost, representing Germany with “Blood & Glitter”.

Who are Lord of the Lost?

Lord of the Lost is a genre-fluid band from Hamburg which has managed to built a considerable fanbase in Germany’s industrial rock scene.

They were founded in mid-2007 by frontman Chris Harms, initially as a solo project, and released their debut single Dry the Rain and debut album Fears in 2009 and 2010 respectivelly. Fast-forward to today, their discography now consists of eight albums, with the latest four peaking in the top 10 of German charts. In fact, their latest album titled, like their Eurovision entry, Blood & Glitter, shot to the 1st place of German charts after only 6 days of pre-orders, and their most recent European tour completely sold out.

Last but definitely not least, Lord of the Lost will leave Liverpool to support Iron Maiden on tour amost immediately after the contest!

The Rehearsal

Blood & Glitter is a stand-out performance. The band are raised up on a metal scaffold in a triangle formation, with red and black LEDS and a flashing light show that never lets up for the full three minutes.

In the third run-through pyro has been added, as intense red flames accompany each chorus. There’s also fireworks to finish, and floor smoke throughout the performance.

A total of over 2 million viewers watched the National Final, but the viewing was lower compared to last year.

In addition, NDR declared satisfied with the viewing results, because there was a huge increase in the percentage of 14 to  49 years old who watched the German selection this year. Overall, the final had a viewing share 15,2% for this age range, this is up by 10% based on the last year’s selection.

Unser Lied für Liverpool was the 23rd most watched show on German TV last night, but the fourth most watched in the 14 to 49 age group.

Germany: With the Lord Of The Lost and “Blood & Glitter” in Eurovision 2023!

Germany just chose their representative for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest via Germany’s National Final Unser Lied für LiverpoolThe show was broadcasted from MMC Studios at Das Erste, ARD Mediathek and eurovision.de. The host of the night was Barbara Schöneberger.

The guest at the National Final were the band “The BossHoss” and Ilse DeLange, who won the second place representing The Netherlands at Eurovision 2014 as the member of the band “The Common Linnets”. Tonight, The BossHoss and Ilse DeLange performed their new single “YOU”.

In today’s show, eight songs (after the withdrawal of Frida Gold for health reasons as the wrote in our previous article) claimed the golden ticket to represent Germany in Liverpool at May. Based on the running order these were:

1. TRONG – “Dare to be Different

The Vietnamese artist opened the show with an Asian-flavored performance, in mainly pink hues and full of energy and dance. A dance break has been added to the song, as well as lyrics in Vietnamese and German. That was a dynamic start to the show!

2. René Miller – “Concrete Heart

René performs his song sitting in a huge rock, in a dark setting (it reminds us Russia 2018). He has perhaps the best song in tonight’s final but unfortunately he had a weak vocal and static performance.

3. Anica Russo – “Once Upon a Dream

Next one was Ancia, who appears in a white dress in a fairytale field, surrounded by grass. She had a beautiful staging and her vocals were good.

4. Lonely Spring – “Misfit

The 4 members of the group, were standing on pedestals, surrounded by many mannequins dressed in black writing the name of the song and the band. A very dark look that probably appeals to a limited audience.

5. Will Church – “Hold On

The winner of the international jury, Will, starts his performance in front of a mirror and then he wanders through a dark big city setting until he reaches his “home”. He was vocally quite good but his singing and stage presence weren’t interesting at all.

6. Patty Gurdy – “Melodies of Hope

It’s time for the fan favorite (and mine as well), Patty Gurdy, with her traditional hurdy-gurdy instrument , who wears a white dress with a branch structure above it. Unfortunately, she was vocally unstable and the stage presence was quite poor.

7. Ikke Hüftgold – “Lied mit gutem Text

The next one was the TikTok wildcard winner, Ikke starts singing his song with “good lyrics” in front of a huge book, wearing a gold shirt and a black half-eaten wig. He also added English lyrics to the song. Basically, this was a bad troll entry and it was aiming exclusively at the German audience. Noise pollution with a catchy beat.

8. Lord Of The Lost – “Blood and Glitter

The final competitor act for tonight’s show were Lord Of The Lost, who were dressed in red latex suits. They gave an explosive performance, full of energy, fire and also glitter. By far the best performance of tonight’s show.

P.S. My review was purely about my personal preferences and music taste

The voting process

During Unser Lied für Liverpool the audience could vote via SMS or phone. The online voting of the previous days was combined with the televoting results. The public vote counts for 50% of the total result.

The remaining 50% was the vote of the international jury where it was consisted of eight European countries and the jurors where people of the music and the entertainment industry. The international judges were from Switzerland, The Netherlands, Finland, Spain, Lithuania, Ukraine, Austria and United Kingdom. During the show, they awarded each act with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 points.

The voting of the International Jury

After the voting by the international jurors, the result was as follows in the picture:

The final results

After the points from the public vote were added to the voting of the international jury, the following result was obtained:

The winners of the night were Lord Of The Lost with their song Blood & Glitter and they will represent Germany in Eurovision 2023, who will compete directly in the Grand Final of the Song Contest!
