According to El Confidencial, Spanish broadcaster RTVE is considering a bid with the European Broadcasting Union for a bid to host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest in the event that Ukraine wins tomorrow’s Grand Final. Ukraine is currently the big favorite to win the competition, but it is very likely that it will not be allowed to host due to the current situation in the country.

The news agency reports that RTVE will meet with the European Broadcasting Union today to discuss the offer. Spain last hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969 and is currently the country with the largest gap between its last victory and today.

The city of Stockholm in Sweden has stated its willingness to host, while SVT has not yet commented on the matter. The Icelandic media also reported that RÚV is positive about the possibility of hosting the 2023 competition. There are also rumors that the United Kingdom and Germany want to host the competition.

According to Icelandic media, Iceland could be a potential host for Eurovision 2023 should Australia or Ukraine end up winning this year’s contest.

As an associate member of the EBU, SBS cannot host Eurovision in case they win. SBS would then have to nominate another broadcaster to organise the show in their country in cooperation with them. Ukraine, the favourites to win Eurovision 2022, would be unlikely to host the 2023 contest due to ongoing war in the country.

SBS previously requested in 2020 that Iceland would host the contest if Australia won. Skarphéðinn Guðmundsson, RÚV’s program director, says that the agreement in question is still unclear and that no public agreements are in force. Skarphéðinn further explained the EBU position on letting Iceland host:

“The EBU has repeatedly expressed its support, confidence and trust in smaller competing nations. And the conditions at home have been thoroughly examined for follow-up and confirmation. “

According to Fréttablaðið, Egilshöll is the most likely location for a Eurovision to be hosted in Iceland. Egilshöll is multi-purpose sports hall in Reykjavík. The venue has a capacity of 18,000 for concerts.
