Spain: TVE’s participation in the Eurovision cost 680.000 Euros

After many years, Spain took the 3rd place in the Eurovision song contest 2022 with Chanel and “SloMo”. Since 1995, which was one of the best results for the country, Spain has taken a lot of low positions, but not anymore. Chanel managed to bring Spain back to the foreground. The Spanish broadcaster TVE published the cost of this year’s participation which stands at 600.000€.

The budget of Spanish public television for the Eurovision song contest was significantly increased compared to last year. TVE spent almost 200,000 Euros more, compared to its participation in Eurovision 2021.
Specifically, TVE spent 680,000 Euros in total. Of these 302,150 Euros was the participation fee, the rest were the other expenses like the hotel, tickets, payments and for the stage performance.

Spain: Withdraws its interest in hosting Eurovision 2023!

Since May 15, after the victory of Kalush Orchestra, the question on everyone’s mind is: “Where will Eurovision 2023 be held?”.

Although the Ukrainian authorities, as well as the national broadcaster Suspilne, have made it clear that the winning country will host the contest, several countries have expressed their interest to be considered as back-ups. Among others, the UK, Italy and Sweden have expressed their willingness to host the contest. It seems, however, that one of the strongest candidates has stepped back off the scene.

On 13 June, the newspaper ‘Faro De Vigo’ published a wide-ranging interview with the president of RTVE, José Manuel Pérez Tornero. Among other statements (happiness about Spain’s result in Turin, plans for a Latin American song contest), President Pérez Tornero made it clear that Spain would not host Eurovision 2023.

“We don’t want to stay under the illusion of a good result, we will aim to win next time. We would host the contest ourselves, but in the end, if Ukraine withdraws, the BBC will organise it.”

It is, therefore, obvious that Spain is out of contention.

But has the EBU come to a conclusion? Perhaps, as the RTVE chairman seems pretty sure that all options have been left aside except Ukraine (which seems to be the EBU’s main choice) and the UK as the only remaining fallback option.

Whatever the case, however, it is certain that the name of the host country and city will not be revealed any time soon.

Spain: RTVE is currently reviewing all elements of Benidorm Fest for 2023!

The Head of the Spanish Delegation, Eva Mora has confirmed that all elements of Benidorm Fest are under review for the next edition in 2023.

Speaking on RTVE, Eva Mora shared some details of the discussions that are currently underway regarding the next edition of Benidorm Fest, for Eurovision 2023. The broadcaster is discussing all elements regarding the new show including dates, number of shows, and how to encourage artists and songwriters to participate.

Eva Mora confirmed however that the professional jury which helped to select the Spanish representative in 2022 will remain for next year. The Head of Delegation explained:

“You always have to tweak things and modify something. The issue of juries has generated a lot of controversy, but the existence of a professional jury is essential. You cannot leave an international proposal in the hands of televoting because we, as people, do not have that perspective to assess a proposal, we let ourselves be carried away more by passion and by tastes.”

The Spanish Head of Delegation is aiming to make Benidorm Fest an essential part of the Spanish music industry:

“We want everyone to want to be at the Benidorm Fest … The Benidorm Fest has to be the engine of the music industry in this country.”

The winner of last year’s Benidorm Fest, Chanel placed 3rd with “SloMo” scoring a total of 459 points.

Spain: The Spotify streams for the Benidorm Fest final

The day of the grand final of Benidorm Fest has finally arrived! After Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Albania (and possibly Moldova), Spain will give us the fourth song for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.

Eight songs are going to compete tonight, most of which seem to have a lead.

According to the Spotify, five of the eight songs are in the top 200 of the daily chart. These are:

The televoting may have a 25% effect on the spanish song festival, but it could still affect the final result. Ay mamá has a very big lead both in the streams but also in youtube views and will probably be first in the televoting tonight. But Terra could overturn this, if it manages to move the Galicians to massively vote for it. Also, SloMo, the song that was the surprise of the first semifinal, is constantly gaining ground. Nothing has been clarified yet!

Benidorm Fest 2022 is held at the Palacio de Deportes L’Illa in Alicante and is presented by Alaska, Inés Hernand and Máximo Huerta.

You can watch the grand final of the Spanish music festival at 22:15 CET by clicking HERE.

Spain: Luna Ki explains what made her withdraw from Benidorm Fest!

As we have already informed you in a previous article, Luna Ki withdrew, just yesterday, from the Spanish Final. Today she posted a video, on her YouTube channel, in which she explains the reasons why she was finally forced to withdraw.

Already from the first seconds of the video, the singer points out that the reason why she will not be able to be part of the Benidorm Fest is

“Europe will finally not allow the use of autotune, something we have been discussing with the Spanish broadcaster for a long time and we have really done everything we needed to.”

She also says

“Despite all the efforts of the Spanish delegation, I will not be able to give my performance. I could make up excuses by saying that I am withdrawing for a health issue, but I won’t, because for me, both as an artist and as a human being, the truth is of primary importance. I will never stop defending my truth and above all the truth of my art.”

On the point where Luna refers to the “truth of her art,” she explains, later on, that it’s very important for her to respect the way she writes her songs, which is why she “would rather defend them by telling the truth than just making an excuse.”

“Yes, I could take part in Benidorm Fest and in case I won I would have about 3 months to change the song and remove the autotune. I know there are many people who will say I can’t sing without it. I honestly tell you that Luna can sing. But Luna Ki can not.”

The singer goes on to say “many will ask ‘Then why don’t you sing without autotune?’ and the truth is that many people close to me ask me the same. It doesn’t seem like a big deal to them.”

“For me autotune is part of the aesthetics of the song and not just a technical support. Try to think of a song that is written on an electric guitar and is suddenly forced to be played by an acoustic one. It would be pointless. Its aesthetic, rhythm and dynamics would be lost. I don’t want something like that to happen to my song.”

In the video Luna goes on to urge the officials to reconsider banning autotune at Eurovision as “it’s a singing competition, not a voice one like, for example, The Voice” and through this she hopes to see more electronic songs on similar big stages in the future.

She also extends her heartfelt thanks to Spanish broadcaster, RTVE, and all those who supported her and believed in her, while asking her listeners to support the other participants in the national final regardless of the result.

Finally, she elaborates on how she experienced the whole situation from the day she learned that she would not be able to participate, explaining that the best way she could convey her thoughts to the audience unchanged is through this video. At the same time, she verifies the rumours of creating a video clip for “Voy a morir” in which it is very likely that she will be wearing the clothes she was going to wear at Benidorm Fest!

Spain: Will Tanxugueiras perform on stage, at Benidorm Fest?

After Luna Ki, that has withdrawn from Benidorm Fest, another act is in danger of not being able to perform live on stage, at Benidorm Fest, due to Aida and Olaia getting infected by COVID-19.

As the group has already Tweeted a few minutes ago and as some members of their team is already at Benidorm, Aida and Olaia will travel within the next few days, as a precaution.

But how is it going to work with Tanxugueiras at this year’s Spanish national final, but also for any other contestant that might also get infected by COVID-19?

The three scenarios

Three different scenarios have been announced in case an artist tests positive for COVID-19 at Benidorm Fest.

In a recent article, RTVE unveiled the contingency plan in case a competing artist turns out positive before appearing in the upcoming Spanish selection process Benidorm Fest.

The producers, Boomerang TV and the broadcaster, RTVE, have come up with three different scenarios to ensure that every song and artist will be able to compete in this year’s Benidorm Fest.

  • The first scenario is that if the artist has already completed his first rehearsal, it will be broadcast during the live show instead of a live performance.
  • Second, if the artist comes out positive before his first rehearsal, then the official music video for the song will be played.
  • The final scenario is that, if there is no music video, the song will be played with montage of images and photos of the artist.

It was announced by Eva Mora, head of the Spanish delegation, that it was not possible to produce live performances, such as those created for this year’s ESCZ selection process and the expected process of Northern Macedonia, due to lack of time.

The Benidorm Fest will be held with two semifinals on January 26 and 27, leading to the Grand Final on January 29. The songs and the artists have been revealed and the order of the two semifinals has also been decided and announced.

The voting system

Only eight artists will make it to the grand final of the Benidorm Fest. The result will be done through a mixed voting system between a professional jury (national and international), televoting and a poll jury:

  • 50% of the grade will correspond to the professional jury consisting of five experts (three of Spanish nationality and two, international).
  • The remaining 50% will be in the hands of the public (where 25% will be by phone and SMS and the remaining 25% will be selected by a poll jury).
  • The artists will be given a phone number and as soon as everyone completes the show, the hotlines will be open for voting. The voting period will be approximately 15 or 20 minutes and the presenters, Alaska, Inés Hernand and Máximo Huerta, will be responsible for the announcement.

Spain 2021: Benidorm Song Festival returns as national final

Spanish broadcaster RTVE announced the revival of the Benidorm Song Festival.  The historical music festival took place in the city of Benidorm from 1959 until its last edition in 2006.  Moreover, the new Benidorm Song Festival will be the Spanish national selection for Eurovision.

The revamped contest will take place in February, 2022.  Three main shows will make the festival: two semi-finals and a grand final.  RTVE will broadcast the show via La 1 and RTVE Play.  More details will be available soon.  However, we already know that a split jury/public vote will decide who will represent Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.

RTVE president José Manuel Pérez Tornero; the president of the Valencian Government, Ximo Puig; and the mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez announced the news in front of the beach.  In addition to this, Ruth Lorenzo performed for the audience her 2014 entry Dancing In The Rain and Waterloo.

We want Benidorm to be a meeting point for what we need most now: music, Europe and diversity. With the ‘Benidorm Festival’ we intend to achieve an emotional and tourist reactivation of the Valencian Community.’

The Benidorm International Song Festival took place from 1959 to 2006.  The contest was modeled after the Italian Sanremo Music Festival.  The winner of the Benidorm Festival received the Golden Mermaid Trophy.  RTVE used to broadcast the event.  Further, RVTE President José Manuel Pérez Tornero said that the Spanish broadcaster would take their participation “very seriously”.

Spain’s last results on Eurovision have been far from satisfactory, being outside of the top 20 since 2015.  In addition to this, their best achievements in recent times have been two top 10s in 2014 and 2012.  Spain came in the top 5 for the last time in 1995 with Anabel Conde who ended in second place.

Hopefully their new national selection process will help Spain make a turning point on Eurovision.
