Eurovision 2024: No changes to the 50/50 system!

Since the conclusion of last year’s contest, there has been a long going conversation about changes needed to be implemented to Eurovision’s voting system. According to many, changes shall be made in favor of public’s opinion.

No changes this year?

However, as reported by the Norwegian newspaper Dagsavisen, there are no plans to change the voting system for Eurovision 2024. As a result, the proportions remain unchanged, and the outcome will be determined in equal shares from national juries and the general public.

The truth is that some delegations who were negatively affected by the aforementioned voting system requested a change. For example, Stig Karlsen, the Norwegian Head of Delegation, advocated for a change in order to provide Europe with the desired winner while also increasing public interest.

A change of direction coming soon?

This year, alterations to public’s power over juries’ have been made for a number of national selections.

In Norway, for instance, the public determined 60% of the results, and it was the public who awarded Gåte the MGP victory. KEiiNo would have prevailed if the 50/50 system had remained in place.

Additionally, Lithuania brought back a super-final. with the audience serving as the sole decision-maker of the winner. Had the previous year’s system remained, Sylvester Belt would not have been awarded the ticket to Malmö.

Generally speaking, the trend for this year are entries that are tele-friendly in order to draw in viewers.

The debate over a voting change will continue this year, and depending on the outcome, it will either strengthen or weaken.

Loreen won last year’s contest with her entry “Tattoo“. Loreen finished first in the jury voting but second in the televote, behind Käärijä. She ultimately won, despite not scoring a single 12-point from any country in televote.
