Eurovision 2025: All you need to know about the coming season

The Eurovision Song Contest never stops for a certain amount of fans, including us in Eurovisionfun, as well as you, our beloved readers. The 1st of September, is the crucial day, after which, any released song, is eligible to compete in the Contest. To put it simply, any song that is released, starting today, can be a potential participating song in the 69th Eurovision Song Contest, which is set to take place on the 13, 15 and 17 of May in Basel, Switzerland.

What is known as of today

After the third win of Switzerland in the Contest, with “The Code” by Nemo, the country’s public broadcaster announced that the host city of Eurovision 2025 will be Basel. The Swiss had previously hosted the first contest in 1956 in the Italian-speaking Lugano, and in 1989 in the French-speaking Lausanne, after the win of Céline Dion.

Eurovision 2025 will be hosted by St. Jakobshalle. It is an indoors arena in Münchenstein, a little outside of Basel and it is mostly used for sports and music concerts. The arena originally had a capacity of 9.000 and it’s the home of Swiss Indoors.

After a renovation, it is now able to seat 12.400 spectators, and it has hosted multiple sport events as well as a variety of concerts.

The countries that will take part

As of now, 24 countries have confirmed their participation in Eurovision 2025. These are:

  • Albania
  • Austria
  • Azerbaijan
  • Belgium
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Israel
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Montenegro
  • Norway
  • Portugal
  • San Marino
  • Serbia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom

Of course, some more countries are expected to confirm in the near future, aiming to surpass 2024, when 37 countries competed in the Contest. We remind you that Russia and Belarus, are banned from taking part, as their public broadcasters are no longer members of the EBU.

We also know a few countries that have confirmed their non-participation, continuing their long absence. Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Slovakia, Morocco, Türkiye, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Hungary, countries that have previously taken part, will not be seen returning in 2025. Another major question, is the participation of the Netherlands, after all the incidents that took place in Malmö. Of course, a pleasant surprise is the return of Montenegro after two years of absence, adding one more country of the Balkans.

Song to be released until mid-March

The important thing about the next months, is the announcement of the artists and the songs that will take part in Eurovision 2025. We’ll slowly learn their names one by one until mid-March, when the Head of Delegations meeting takes place, in order to formally submit their entries, on behalf of the public broadcasters.

Albania and Montenegro will be the first to select their entries by late 2024, some time before the new year, as long as there is no unexpected surprise, e.g. France which released their song for Eurovision 2024 on November 8, 2023!

We may not know the name of any artist nor their song, but shortly – and we mean really shortly- the first artist will be revealed!
