Eurovision Latin America: Chile and three other countries are bidding for the inaugural edition!
It is known that discussions to hold the first edition of Eurovision Latin America in Chile have been going on since last year. The production company that holds the rights to Eurovision worldwide, Voxovation, has confirmed that Chile and three other countries, which have confirmed their participation, are bidding to organize Eurovision Latin America 2025.
Voxovation representative Omar Retamal gave an interview to Chilean media outlet LATERCERA, answering relevant questions about the planning of Eurovision Latin America 2025.
How did the possibility of Chile hosting Eurovision come about?
“Eurovision Latin America is part of the expansion of the iconic European festival, which has been held since 1956. It was created after World War II as an initiative to unite Europe through music under the slogan “United by Music”. Over time, it has become the most important music event in the world, gathering more than 160 million spectators every year.
In 2022, Voxovation Inc., the company that owns the rights to Eurovision internationally, began talks with several Latin American countries to bring the global impact of the contest to the region.
Over the years, Chile has demonstrated its organizational capacity by hosting important international events such as the 2015 Copa America and the 2023 Pan American Games, positioning itself as an ideal host for a festival of this magnitude. This aligns with the country’s strategy of attracting high-profile events.”
What is the current status of Chile’s candidacy to host Eurovision?
“Currently, Chile is one of the ten countries that have confirmed their participation in the competition, but our goal is to reach fifteen. In turn, Chile has been confirmed as one of the four countries in competition to be the host country of Eurovision Latin America 2025, with the potential to become the official venue. Although a final decision has not yet been made, we continue to move forward in the process, working closely with key actors, the government and the private sector to ensure that all aspects of the event are effectively addressed.”
What kind of support have you received from the government or the Ministry of Culture to bring Eurovision to Chile?
“The Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage has shown great enthusiasm for the possibility of Chile being the host country of Eurovision Latin America, recognizing the multiple benefits that this event would bring to the country. Because of this, the proposal has already been presented to the Presidency team and is currently in the process of evaluation.
This initiative represents a unique opportunity to position Chile on the international music scene, boosting the creative industry, tourism and the local economy. We continue to move forward in constant dialogue with the authorities to make this great project a reality.”
If you arrive in Chile, would the festival be held with the same structure and dynamics as in Europe?
“Yes, Eurovision Latin America will follow the European format, with live competitions, international voting and global broadcast on television and digital platforms.
In addition, the festival will have special adaptations to reflect the cultural diversity of Latin America, incorporating its own musical styles and elements that represent the identity of each country. Also, world-class artists will be present, providing unique shows that will enrich the experience of the event.
The festival will feature a red carpet and an official welcome ceremony, following the same format as Eurovision in Europe, we will have renowned international artists, artists in competition and delegations as guests who will parade before the media and the public. There will also be international promotional events designed to position the host country as a premier cultural and tourist destination.”
Has Chile already assured its participation in the event, regardless of the country where it is held?
“Yes, Chile has assured its participation in Eurovision Latin America, regardless of the hosting country.”
What others and how many Latin American countries are going to compete?
“There are currently 10 countries in competition, but we are looking to reach 15 in total for the first edition. We will be able to reveal the names later.”
