Croatia: 221 songs submitted for Dora 2025!

The national broadcaster of Croatia, HRT, announced that 221 entries submitted for the 2025 edition of Dora, the song contest through which the former yugoslav country is going to choose their representative for the 69th Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland, in May 2025.

The aforementioned 221 submitted entries for Dora 2025 are a record number of submissions since the establishment of Dora in Croatia. However this came as no big surprise given the great success of this year’s entry in Eurovision 2024 with Baby Lasagna and his song“Rim Tim Tagi Dim” which finished in the second place of the grand final. It’s the best placement of the country on the scoreboard in its Eurovision history.

Dora 2025 will take place in the second half of February, with the exact date and venue yet to be confirmed.

Israel: All the highlights from the fourth episode of HaKokhav Haba!

The fourth episode of the highly anticipated Israeli selection process for Eurovision 2025, HaKokhav Haba, aired last night. This competition, known in English as “The Next Star”, is the format used by Israel to choose its representative for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Since its debut in 2015, HaKokhav Haba has been the main selection method for Israel, excluding the years 2022 and 2023. The show has achieved significant success, notably securing Israel’s Eurovision victory with Netta in 2018.

Though filming for this season began on October 10 at Neve Ilan Studios, on November 10 the official broadcast commenced on Israeli television.

The Format

In the “HaKokhav Haba” format, each contestant performs a song, with the aim of securing at least a 70% approval rating. This score is determined by a combination of live audience votes from those attending the studio and a jury panel’s vote. Each member of the jury can contribute a maximum of 10% to the contestant’s total score.

Hosts and Judging Panel

Returning to host the show are Rotem Sela and Assi Azar. Azar has been involved with HaKokhav Haba since its inaugural edition in 2013 and previously hosted the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. Sela joined as a host in the second season and has been a presenter ever since.

The judging panel for this season includes a diverse group of music industry veterans:

  • Assaf Amdursky
  • Keren Peles
  • Shiri Maimon
  • Eden Hason
  • Ran Danker
  • Itay Levi

With their combined experience, the panel ensures a high level of competition, which promises to be even more intense than last season’s edition.

Contestants and Their Performances

In tonight’s episode, five contestants took the stage, and four of them advanced to the next stage of the competition. Here’s a look at some of the standout performances:

  • Dolev Mendelbaum (16): Originally from Texas, USA, Dolev returned to Israel ten years ago and has been inspired by pop music ever since. Tonight, he performed “Jealous” by Labrinth, earning an 85% score from the judges. While his performance received unanimous support from the panel, it didn’t quite capture the audience’s attention in the studio.
  • Esther Guedj (27): After returning to Israel earlier this year from France, Esther chose to sing “Voila”, the French entry in Eurovision 2021 by Barbara Pravi. Although she struggled with some of the higher notes and seemed to mimic Pravi’s style, Esther still impressed the judges with her performance, earning a solid 86% score. However, Assaf Amdursky did not vote for her.
  • Nir Abdu (20): A professional singer who regularly performs at weddings and events, Nir performed “Nishba” by Haim Moshe, a well-known song in Israel with a Mediterranean flair. While his performance left mixed feelings among the judges, Nir received an 80% score. Once again, Assaf Amdursky chose not to vote for him.
  • Yuval Raphael: A survivor of the Nova festival on October 7, Yuval dedicated her emotional performance of “Anyone” by Demi Lovato to mental health issues, stemming from her own life-threatening experience. Despite not having professional performance experience, Yuval captivated the judges with her raw emotion, receiving the highest score of the season so far – an impressive 98%. Many are now speculating that Yuval could be Eden Golan’s successor.

The winner of HaKokhav Haba and therefore Israel’s representative in Eurovision 2024 was Eden Golan. Eden Golan performed her song “Hurricane“, finishing fifth overall.

Three countries, one mission: Bashar Murad eyes Eurovision once more

Palestinian artist Bashar Murad, renowned for blending Arabic pop with international musical influences and for his activism, has sparked fresh excitement with a TikTok post hinting at potential submissions to the national selections of three Eurovision countries: San Marino, Ireland, and Iceland. This comes after his near-success in representing Iceland at Eurovision 2024 with his politically charged song “Wild West.” Ultimately, he narrowly missed securing his ticket to Malmö, losing to Hera Björk.

Murad’s participation in Söngvakeppnin, Iceland’s national selection, ignited significant debate. While his music was celebrated for its artistry, it also drew political attention due to his Palestinian roots and the global context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

San Marino, a country known for its openness to international artists, and Ireland, celebrated for its embrace of cultural diversity, stand out as logical choices for Murad’s ambitions. Meanwhile, Iceland, having already showcased Murad’s unique voice and perspective, remains a plausible contender for his renewed attempt to secure a spot on the Eurovision stage.

Whether his efforts will culminate in a Eurovision appearance is yet to be seen. However, his journey continues to inspire discussion, drawing both support and criticism from various audiences.

Albania: Klea Dina replaces Olsi Bylyku in Festivali i Këngës 63 line-up!

In an unexpected turn of events a month prior to Festivali i Këngës 63, Albania’s national selection for Eurovision 2025, RTSH announced that Olsi Bylyku, who was originally set to compete with his song “Tupanët”, has withdrawn from the competition for personal reasons.

As a result, Klea Dina will take his place and will now compete with her song “Dashuri ndiej”.

A post shared by RTSH (@rtshqiptar)

How was Klea Dina selected?

According to the competition rules, when an artist withdraws from Festivali i Këngës, they are replaced by another participant who was evaluated during the preliminary selection process. The artist who replaces the withdrawn act is selected based on their performance and ranking during the earlier evaluation of the contestants.

In this case, Klea Dina received higher marks in the preliminary rounds than the other eliminated participants, ultimately replacing Olsi Bylyku. As a result, she will now compete in Festivali i Këngës 63 and will perform “Dashuri ndiej” aiming to represent Albania in Eurovision 2025.

Music video filming is underway

This year’s edition of Festivali i Këngës promises to be full of surprises. Under the artistic direction of Elhaida Dani, the participants of FiK 63 have now begun filming music videos that will be released alongside their songs ahead of the competition.

A combination of jury and public vote will decide

This year, according to Euromix.il, Albania’s representative for Eurovision 2024 will be chosen through a combination of public and jury voting. The selection process will follow a 60/40 model, combining jury and audience input to determine the country’s next entry.

This change reflects Festivali i Këngës’ gradual shift toward incorporating more public input, especially in the context of Eurovision. For many years, the festival faced criticism regarding transparency and its failure to align with modern Eurovision standards.

The dates for FiK 63 have not yet been announced. However, renowned singer and Albania’s former Eurovision representative, Elhaida Dani, will serve as the festival’s artistic director this year.

The Albanian public’s pick for Eurovision 2024 was Besa with her song Zemrën n’dorë. Besa released a revamped version in English titled Titan for Eurovision, where she did not make it to the Grand Final, finishing fourteenth in the second semi-final.
