Portugal: A record number of entries were submitted for Festival Da Canção 2024!

Back in August, Portugal confirmed its 2024 participation via the “Festival Da Canção” page on Instagram. Along with Portugal’s participation, it was confirmed that Festival Da Canção, a music festival of great significance in Portugal, will remain as the country’s selection format for Eurovision 2024.

The deadline of the submission process was yesterday, October 15. All Portuguese citizens or residents, including Portuguese living outside Portugal, as well as citizens of other nationalities residing in Portugal, could apply.

In total, RTP announced that a record number of 809 entries were submitted through this open submission. The high interest seems totally reasonable, considering the significance of FDC in the national music scene and the relatively successful course of the country in Eurovision the past years.

What’s next?

As far as the Festival da Canção 2024 is concerned, 20 songs will compete.

  • 14 of those will be selected following an invitation by the country’s national broadcaster RTP to creators of various music genres.
  • The remaining six will be selected through this afore-mentioned submission process, which turns out to be really successful as well as highly competitive for the contenders.

The winner of Festival Da Canção 2023 and hence, Portugal’s representative in Eurovision 2023, was Mimicat with her song “Ai Coração”, which finished 23rd in the Grand Final.

With less than two months to go until the 21st Junior Eurovision contest, the song that will represent Portugal in the children’s contest has just been released.

This year, Portugal used The Voice Kids to choose its representative, with Júlia Machado emerging as the winner.

Singing about bullying and her own experience through it, Júlia Machado hopes that this song will be taken as a “cry of solidarity” to all those going through a similar struggle.

Where I Belong was written by Fernando Daniel, João Direitinho, Aurora Pinto and Luís ‘Twins’ Pereira.

Portugal: Participation confirmed for Malmö 2024!

Portugal will be present at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö, Sweden.

A few minutes ago it became known through the official account of the Festival da Canção on Instagram that the country of the Iberian Peninsula will compete this time on Swedish soil, something that had not happened after the 1992 Competition and then in Malmö. For the record, Portugal due to poor results and financial reasons had decided to stay away from the 2000, 2013 and 2016 competitions which coincidentally took place in Sweden.

As far as the Festival da Canção 2024 is concerned, 20 songs will compete, of which 14 will be selected following an invitation by the country’s national broadcaster RTP to creators of various music genres, while the remaining six will be selected through the submission process . The submission process for original and unpublished songs is open from today until October 15, 2023. All Portuguese citizens or residents, including Portuguese living outside Portugal, as well as citizens of other nationalities residing in Portugal, can apply for these 6 positions. The selection of these six songs will be done by submitting the tracks to RTP. These tracks must be available by filling out the form available here.

In this year’s contest in Liverpool the country was represented by Mimicat and her song “Ai coração” which finished 23rd in the Grand Final receiving 59 points.

Eurovision 2023: Stand-in rehearsal clips are leaked!

It has already been two months since the 67th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool. 37 performers stepped on the stage of the M&S Bank Arena giving it all and representing their countries in the biggest song competition in the world, after months of intense preparations.

The impressive stage performances that they pulled off were first tried on the Eurovision stage a few days before their arrival through simulations, known as stand in rehearsals. Stand in rehearsals are usually executed by local artists and performers so all participants can know in advance the television result of the performances. On a later stage, they have the opportunity to ask for changes during the technical rehearsals executed by the representatives themselves.

Each year we have the chance to take a look in these performances and compare this preparatory work to what we actually saw on the TV show. For example, last year we had the chance to see how some performances would look like if there weren’t the technical problems regarding the “sun” not being able to turn around.

This year, 7 videos of stand in rehearsals have leaked so far and they are the following:

  • Switzerland

  • Israel

  • Serbia

  • Portugal

  • Italy

  • Finland

  • Cyprus

There were obviously some changes made to performances. The dance break on the Israeli performance obviously changed and Portugal finally decided not to use the led screens.

What do you think of these stand in rehearsals? Stay tuned on EurovisionFun for all news regarding Eurovision Song Contest!
