Sweden: Marcus & Martinus are back at Melodifestvalen 2024!

Aftonbladet’s Torbjörn Ek and Stina Dahlgren surpised us tonight by revealing a couple more artists that will take part in Melodifestivalen 2024! We remind you that last year, Aftonbladet revealed 24 out of the 28 acts of Melodifestivalen 2023, even before SVT announced the line-up officially.

It seems like we will have a 2023 deja vu next year. Marcus & Martinus and Adam Woods, who impressed everyone with his first-time-on-stage performance with Jon Henrik Fjällgren and Arc North. Also Clara Klingenström returns for a second time after her debut in 2021.

Who are Marcus & Martinus?

They finished second to Loreen , got to sing for Crown Princess Victoria and are going on an arena tour this winter. Now Aftonbladet reveals that the Norwegian twins Marcus & Martinus Gunnarsen, 21, are returning to Melodifestivalen next year to try to repeat, and preferably surpass, this year’s success. Are they back to win the whole thing?

Who is Clara Klingenström?

Many artists are still waiting!

The new format of Melodifestivalen starting from 2024, with five sub-competitions and a total of 30 competing artists, is said to be the reason why this year there is a little delay in the announcements. Sweden: Liverpool inspires Malmö on how Eurovision 2024 should be hosted, Karin Karlsson says!

Karin Karlsson, who’s in charge of organising the event for Malmö municipality, was part of a group of people representing Malmö who travelled to Liverpool earlier this week, to discuss and evaluate the financial impact on Liverpool, after its hosting of the competition this year. As we had reported in one of our past articles, Liverpool grossed £55 million of profit, that was injected into the local economy and the numbers of visitors exceeded all expectations.

In an interview of Karin with Sveriges Radio, she gave her insight on how Liverpool and their hosting can inspire Malmö next year:

“It’s really inspiring how they worked to develop the brand in the whole city, that is a very very important learning for us to bring in this time. It was really strict last time we co-operated with the EBU and the broadcaster, Liverpool seemed to have pushed it a bit forward and used it more freely which had a marvelous affect on the city and the whole event.”

Malmö has been allocated with the same budget as the one they had back in 2013, a budget of just over €2.5 million for hosting and all the related activities, however, in real numbers this is a smaller budget than a decade ago, Karin comments on that:

“We will have exactly, almost the same budget this time, so with all the inflation the money is actually smaller this time. We will have to cooperate, this is the key factor for us this time, cooperate with companies in the city, all organisers. I think it’s going to be tough for us, we will make it but we need to do exactly the same as Liverpool has done.”

Despite all the challenges posed by the current worldwide inflation, Karin believes that they are in a better position than where they were the last time Malmö hosted the contest:

“We already know what this is, we are in a much better position than we were in last time. We can do it in another way from last time.”

The 68th Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Malmö, Sweden in 7, 9 and 11th of May 2024, after the second win of Loreen in Liverpool, with her song Tattoo:

The Eurovision participation fee is going up for another year!

In an interview with Eirevision, Michael Kealy, the head of the Irish delegation for the Eurovision Song Contest, disclosed that the participation fee will rise for another year.

To be eligible to compete in the competition, the national broadcasters must pay a fee annually. This amount varies between countries primarily as a result of differences in population but also due to economic factors. According to the announcement made during the September meeting of the participating countries’ heads of delegation in Berlin, this cost is expected to increase once more this year.

The EBU cites the competition’s “not economically viable” condition as the cause of this increase. The aforementioned matter emerged subsequent to Belarus and Russia’s disqualifications from the EBU. Russia was one of the countries that contributed the most financially to the contest due to its big population and robust economy. Therefore, the other participating countries should now pay this amount.

This expense accounts for one-third of the funding that Ireland’s public television broadcaster has available for the competition, as the leader of the Irish delegation stated. This sum climbed to €105,099 in 2023 from €92,588 in 2022. This amount was €180,000 for Romania in 2023 and €347,697 for Spain in the same year.

Sweden: Samir & Viktor return to Melodifestivalen 2024 after six years of absense!

Aftonbladet and Torbjörn Ek did it again and just a while ago revealed new potential Melodifestivalen 2024 acts! Last year, Aftonbladet revealed 24 out of the 28 acts of Melodifestivalen 2023, even before SVT announced the line-up officially.

The Swedish duo Samir och Viktor make their return after six years of absence from the contest! The duo adds up to the potential lineup that will compete in the hopes of getting selected to represent Sweden next year, at the Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Malmö, Sweden. They are more or less known to the fanbase, having competed more than once at Melodifestivalen in the past.

Who are Samir & Viktor?

Samir & Viktor have competed three times before in Melodifestivalen, in 2015 with “Groupie“, in 2016 with “Bada nakna” and in 2018 with “Shuffla“. The first two times they made it to the final via Second Chance, the third time they went directly to the final where they finished fourth, the duo’s best final position.

But the recession affected both of them with serious income losses, and this summer they chose to reunite and released the song “Skål” together, while they also appeared on this years last show of Allsång på Skansen with Victor Leksell.

Samir Badran, 33, fully invested in his new profession as a broker while Viktor Frisk, 28, continued as a lifestyle influencer while trying to launch a solo career in music. Now they are making their comeback to the contest, after six years!

According to sources, it seems that some record companies and music publishers have received word of mouth about songs and artists, but that SVT has not yet sent out that many official confirmations. As it is still quite early, things can change until the confirmation emails go out to the artists.

We remind you that Melodifestivalen 2023 is scheduled to take place between February 3rd to March 9th, while SVT has received 2624 songs. The final list of Melodifestivalen participants will be published later this year, between end of November and beginning of December.
