Sweden: Melodifestivalen is about to alter significantly!

Anders Wistbacka, Melodifestivalen‘s Head of Project, indicated that the method of running the popular TV event, via which Sweden’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest is chosen, is likely to change shortly.

There have been some modifications made to the competition recently. Specifically, it was determined last year that the presenter position will only be held by one person going forward. As previously mentioned, Carina Berg will be assuming this role this year. It has also been disclosed that a new, fifth event will shortly take the place of the semi-final. Subsequent announcements on this modification will be made.

However, Wistbacka promises further updates and adjustments in addition to current ones. In more detail, he said:

We’ll have a lot of participants in different types of roles. We’re going to redesign the program a little bit with new elements here and there.

You ‘ll find out soon.

What modifications to Melodifestivalen’s current format would you like to see?

The winner of last year’s Melodifestivalen and consequently Sweden’s representative at Eurovision 2023 was Loreen, who took the first place in Liverpool with the song “Tattoo”.

Australia: Montaigne asks for Israel’s removal from Eurovision!

Through an instagram post, Montaigne, the Australian representative in Eurovision 2020 and 2021 calls for a removal of Israel from the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

As an artist who has had the privilege of competing in Eurovision, it is my shared opinion that Israel should be removed from the 2024 contest.

I have signed an open letter to the European Broadcasting Union asking them to remove Israel as it is unfair to any artist they select to have their participation tied to political motivation. This is not the spirit of the European celebration of music.

There have been calls to ban Israel from Eurovision 2024. In Finland, 1300 artists signed a petition asking for Israel to be removed. The British representative Olly Alexander has also shared in public his opinion against Israel.

Montaigne didn’t manage to qualify for the final of Eurovision 2021, being the only Australian act failing to qualify to a Eurovision Final.

As we previously reported, the artists who will compete in Das deutsche Finale 2024—the national final through which Germany’s entry for the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest will be selected—will be unveiled on January 19.

The artists taking part in Das Deutsche Finale 2024 have been chosen since the Christmas season, according to NDR, which also revealed that all 693 songs that were submitted were thoroughly reviewed. There are 127 bands, 71 duets, and 475 solo entries among them. Melissa Mantzoukis, a Greek-German singer who competed in the Greek national selection in 2023, is one of the contenders.

Rumored song submissions from other singers include Marie Reim, Alexandra Hofmann, Marina Marx, boy band Zeitflug, Ksenia Eirich, Dario Black, Fabio, Eva Lima, Gloria Massamba, Gute Katze Böse Katze and John Riot.

Das Deutsche Finale 2024 is scheduled for February 16, 2024, at 22:00 local time. TV3 in Germany will carry the event live. Live broadcasts from Berlin will take place on ARD Mediathek, eurovision.de, and Das Erste.

Germany was represented last year by Lord of the Lost and the song “Blood and Glitter”. The band, which is well-known in Germany, came in last place overall, with a total of 18 points. Will Germany be able to recover from its string of poor results and move to the left side of the leaderboard?

Romania: The decision on its 2024 Eurovision participation is due by January 22!

The list of countries participating in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place in Malmö, Sweden, in May of next year, was made public last month. Romania is not included on the list. With a total budget of EUR 80 million for 2024, Romanian public television faces financial challenges that make its participation unclear.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has given Romania’s national broadcaster until January 22 to consider all the options and decide whether or not the country should take part, according to Euroalfa.

Specifically, representatives of the Romanian public broadcaster, TVR, stated:

The final decision on Romania’s participation in Eurovision 2024 has not been taken. We are in contact with the organisers (the EBU), all possibilities are still open.

Romania was represented last year by Theodor Andrei, who performed the song “D.G.T. (Off and On)” in the Second Semi-Final, failing to qualify for the Final.

UK: Dan Shipton will not stage Olly Alexander’s Eurovision entry – Who’s taking over?

Dan Shipton will not be directing the stage performance of the United Kingdom’s entry in the 68th Eurovision Song Contest, as was disclosed on The Euro Trip Podcast.

Shipton served as the director of the British entries from 2015 to 2018. He also did so in 2022, the year Sam Ryder’s “Spaceman” came in second. In addition, he took overall creative supervision of the Competition in 2023 when the UK hosted on behalf of Ukraine.

The BBC’s executive producer for the competition, Lee Smithurst, told Euro Trip that Dan Shipton would not be in charge of the stage performance because Olly Alexander already had his own team.

Dan is not going to be doing the staging because Olly has his own team.

It’s important that he has his own team around him for Eurovision.

As for Olly Alexander, he added:

The good thing is that Olly’s such a massive fan of Eurovision – he does know it inside out. You don’t need to tell Olly you can only have six people on stage, or that your song can’t be more than three minutes long.

Who is going to stage Olly Alexander’s Eurovision entry?

According to Lee Smithurst, the British entry is being directed by Theo Adams, who the British representative has been collaborating with for a number of years.

For Olly and Theo to be working together already and thinking about ideas is great because they’re a team and they trust each other. They’re going to come up with something great.

Olly Alexander and Lee Smithurst collaborated on a number of noteworthy projects, the most prominent of which being Alexander’s world tour and duet with Elton John at the 2021 BRIT Awards.

Norway: Auto-Tune will be allowed in MGP 2024 once more!

The Melodi Grand Prix, in 2024, will once again permit the use of Auto-Tune, according to Norwegian media outlet TV2.

As a result, the MGP 2024 performers this year will once again get the chance to have flawless vocals using the so-called Auto-Tune, a digital tool that adjusts “sour” tones to ensure proper pitch.

Last year, Auto-tune was described by the Norwegian Head of Delegation, Stig Karlsen, as a development that follows thr current global trends in live concerts and music performances.

Some of the artists, nevertheless, stated that they would prefer not to utilize it. For instance Ulrikke chose not to use Auto-Tune during her performance last year. However, because the EBU forbids contestants in the Eurovision Song Contest from using Auto-Tune during their performances, Norwegian fans have voiced reservations about this modification.

Many are thinking that this would change, although the EBU has not yet provided confirmation of this rule change. However, according to a recent prediction made by the Norwegian delegation’s head, Auto-Tune will soon be permitted at Eurovision!

Melodi Grand Prix 2024

On January 5, the songs that will be nominated to represent the country are anticipated to be released. Melodi Grand Prix 2024 will feature 18 contestants over the course of four weeks:

  • January 13 – First Semi Final
  • January 20 – Second Semi Final
  • January 27 – Third Semi Final
  • February 3– Grand Final

Last year, Norway was represented by Alessandra and the song “Queen of Kings”. With a total of 268 points, Alessandra came in fifth place overall and third in the televote. Will Norway be able to maintain its success and secure a third consecutive top 10 finish?
