Iceland: The first names rumoured for Söngvakeppnin 2025!

A few days after the official announcements by RÚV, Iceland’s national broadcaster, for this year’s Söngvakeppnin, the national competition through which the country’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest is selected, the first rumours began about the artists who will claim to represent the island in Eurovision 2025.

The first rumoured artists

The well-known Icelandic website Vísir, through two recent articles, publishes the first three names that appear to be on the list of Söngvakeppnin 2025.

The first name is ICEGUYS. This is a boyband that has enjoyed enormous popularity on the Arctic island in recent years with five recent soldout concerts. ICEGUYS consists of Friðrik Dór, Rúrik Gíslason, Jón Jónsson, Herra Hnetusmjör and Aron Can.

The band’s manager Máni Pétursson has already stated in an interview:

The second name rumored is that of Juli Heiðar Halldórsson. He is one of the most well-known artists in Iceland and already has experience in Söngvakeppnin, having participated in 2017 with Þórdís Birna Borgarsdóttir and the song “Heim til þín” without much success, however, as they finished in 5th place in the first semi-final and failed to advance to the final of the national competition.

The third name is Ágúst Þór Bjarnason. Ágúst is a young and aspiring musician, living in Akureyri. Last summer, he played for Magnús Kjartansson, the singer of Stuðlaband, and performed with the band at all the biggest outdoor festivals in the country. Ágúst was previously the singer in the band Færibandinu.

On Friday, January 17, the presentation of the artists and songs that will take part in Söngvakeppnin 2025 is scheduled at 20:40 CET through the special TV show “Lögin í Söngvakeppninni 2025”. Once again, the hosts of the final will be Stéphanie Surrugue and Sara Bro.

It is truly a huge joy to be part of Denmark’s biggest ‘party bus’ once again. The sense of community and the joy that surrounds Dansk Melodi Grand Prix is something we all need in these complicated times. At the same time, Grand Prix is deeply rooted in Danish and European traditions, with cultural significance beyond just the music. I am thrilled to be part of this event alongside my ‘work rocket,’ Sara Bro.

Sara Bro added:

Last year’s experience was magical, becoming part of the wonderful Grand Prix family. There’s a special atmosphere with the most passionate and dedicated fans who create an environment full of joy and sparkle. I hope everyone is ready for another celebration with great music and entertainment. I can’t wait to welcome everyone, both at home and at Boxen, together with my idol and partner, Stéphanie Surrugue.

The eight artists and their songs will be revealed on February 6 during a press conference at DR Koncerthuset.

Eurovision 2025: New Details About the Arena, EuroClub, and Eurovision Village!

What will the arena hosting Eurovision, the Eurovision Village, and the EuroClub look like in Basel, Switzerland, the country hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2025? These and more were discussed in the “Schweiz aktuell” program on SRF 1, which aired a feature this week on the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel. Among other things, the first glimpses of the venues hosting the competition and related events were presented.

The Eurovision Venue

The feature revealed information about the main venue, the St. Jakobshalle, an arena in the Basel area where the contest will take place. Thomas Kastl, the venue’s director, shared the timeline, stating that the hall will be reserved for approximately 7.5 weeks for the contest, with construction beginning on April 7. As previously reported, the roof of St. Jakobshalle will require temporary reinforcement to accommodate the contest’s needs. Normally, the roof can support 120 tons, but the contest requires 280 tons of equipment. A steel beam support system will be used to strengthen the roof for the event.

The Eurovision Village

Regarding the parallel events in the city, the program presented details about the Eurovision Village venue. In Basel, the Eurovision Village will be held indoors rather than outdoors. Lorenz Schibler, the project manager for “City Venues ESC Basel” revealed that up to 12,000 people can be accommodated in the exhibition hall. The space will feature one large main stage, several smaller stages, food stalls, viewing areas, and collaborations with various organizations. The Eurovision Village is expected to cost 2 million Swiss francs. Operating hours will be from noon to midnight, with free entry and a diverse program including performances by charitable organizations, theaters, and schools. Additionally, the Turquoise Carpet 2025 is anticipated to be the largest in Eurovision history, ending at the Eurovision Village.

The EuroClub

The EuroClub will be located right next to the Eurovision Village. Melisa Kaymaz, president of the “Eurovision Club Switzerland” shared her expectations for the EuroClub’s program, saying the goal is to host various performances by Eurovision artists, including an appearance by last year’s winner, Nemo. Up to 3,000 people will be able to enjoy the EuroClub each day.

Safety and Accommodation

Finally, Letizia Elia, director of “Basel Tourismus” spoke about safety, noting that “preparations are being made seriously.” Additionally, in collaboration with local hotels, more rooms will be made available for visitors, with prices ranging from 250 to 450 Swiss francs for four-star accommodations.
