Israel: The bill for the closure of IPBC/Kan was not passed! | The future of the broadcaster as a member of the EBU still in question!

The bill to close down IPBC/Kan, Israel’s national broadcaster, was ultimately not passed. However, the question remains whether the broadcaster will meet the requirements to continue as a member of the European Broadcasting Union.

During the debate in the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) Finance Committee, Chairman David Bitan announced that the committee did not approve the bill to close the Israeli broadcaster, which had already passed a preliminary reading in the Knesset plenary. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) had also intervened, sending a strong letter to MK Bitan and other members of the committee, emphasizing the need for an independent broadcaster. Bitan reiterated this message in his statement:

“We need public broadcasting.”

What will be forwarded to the committee is the section that would subsume the broadcaster’s budget into the state budget. This move could potentially jeopardize the independence of “KAN” and may jeopardize Israel’s participation in Eurovision. Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi responded to this decision by saying that they would find another way to pass the bill.

The proposal and its consequences

Despite the announcement by the chairman of the Economic Committee that the law to close down the broadcaster will not be advanced, some sections that the coalition wanted to advance will proceed as normal. Among them is the section that would submit the broadcaster’s budget to the state budget, requiring annual government approval. This still jeopardizes the broadcaster’s independence and, consequently, Israel’s participation in Eurovision.

The European Broadcasting Union has already warned committee members that the country’s participation in the international contest is at risk if the law is passed. If enacted, the broadcaster’s budget would become vulnerable, as it would require government approval every year. Even if “KAN” is not closed, its independence would be at risk and the EBU could decide that “KAN” no longer meets the criteria for membership of the Union.

The Journalists’ Organization stated that it will continue to fight against MK Bitan’s decision, arguing that it will politicize the broadcast and ultimately destroy public broadcasting in Israel.

Israel: Will not attend the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin!

Breaking news are coming from Israel, as their brodcaster  just announced on Twitter that Israel (at the moment) will not participate at the upcoming edition of 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, in Turin, Italy.

The Israeli public broadcaster IPBC has reported that Israel is currently not planning on competing in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, after security protection for the delegation cannot be guaranteed.

Workers at the GSS, the Israeli security service are currently on strike, with the organisation stating that they are unable to provide persons to accompany the delegation in Turin. The Israeli broadcaster has stated:

We can not take responsibility for the security of the delegation without security on behalf of the State of Israel.

The Israeli broadcaster released a tweet this morning saying:

Due to the strike by the Foreign Ministry, the GSS can not handle the Israeli delegation to the Eurovision Song Contest, and as of this moment, the Israeli delegation will not participate in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest in Turin.

Therefore, Israel will not participate in this year’s Eurovision at Turin, for the present moment.

Michael Ben David is due to represent Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “I.M” in 2nd position in the second semi-final on 12th May.

Don’t forget to vote for the Grand Final of our poll here!

Israel: 130 songs were submitted for Turin 2022!

About 130 songs will take part in the process of choosing Israel’s participation in Eurovision 2022, which will be selected through the X Factor format.

As it has been known for months, X Factor will be the successor to Rising Star as the format of choice for the artist who will represent Israel in Eurovision 2022 in Turin next May.

Exclusive information from Euromix states that only 130 songs were submitted to the committee that will select the eight songs, which will be performed by the final four that will compete for the ticket to Italy. This is the smallest number from 2018 onwards. 220 songs participated in last year’s selection, 250 in the 2020 one and 200 in that of 2019.

IPBC officials believe that the number of songs is explained by the strict requirements they have set, as well as the ignorance of the creators about the contestants who will perform their songs.

This was the reason why they invited the creators during the semifinals, in order to get to know the artists. Nevertheless, their response was small, as only ten of them watched the semifinals that have already been filmed.

The format

The song submission process was completed this morning, one month after its official opening on September 19th. The 130 songs submitted will be examined by a panel of 11 people.

This committee will assign two songs to each of the four finalists of the X Factor grand final. In the first phase, one of the two songs of each finalist will be selected through the voting of the audience and the jury.

The song that will be selected will be the one with which each participant will claim the representation of Israel for Eurovision 2022. Four songs and four artists will compete in the X Factor Grand Final. Then, the audience and the jury will jointly choose the artist and the song who will represent the country in Turin.

We remind you that the popular talent show will be presented by Liron Weizman. According to domestic media, X Factor Israel judges will include Netta Barzilai, Aviv Geffen, Margalit Tzan’ani, Ran Danker and Miri Mesika.

Israel was represented by Eden Alene in Eurovision 2021 with the song Set Me Free, finishing 17th in the grand final on May 22nd.
