Eurovision 2022: Germany’s second rehearsal

Today is the final day of rehearsals in Turin, with the second rehearsals of the BIG 5 countries!

Next up on stage for their second rehearsal is Germany and Malik Harris with the song “Rockstars”.

Who is Malik Harris?

German-American singer and rapper Malik has been writing songs on his guitar for over a decade. Harris comes from a very musical family, his grandfather was an opera singer, his grandmother a pianist, and his father plays several instruments and teaches cello.

The young star’s first singles, Say The Name (2018) and Welcome to the Rumble (2019), were hits on the German airplay chart and streaming platforms, which led to a solo tour in May 2019.

Malik has supported international acts including James BluntAlex ClareJeremy LoopsTom Odell and LP.

The Rehearsal

The singer starts by playing the piano and then he gets up and raps holding a drumstick. Some carpets are on stage. In the second chorus he plays the guitar.

A very intimate performance with warm lighting.

His vocals are pretty good and I have a feeling Germany could do much better than anticipated.

The second run was also pretty good. There were some major delays before the final run started.

The Rehearsal

This is really smart performance from Malik! He works the cameras really well and makes a real connection with the audience.

The staging is simple and stripped back, and the Eminem-style rap section has real intensity in contrast to the sections either side where it’s just Malik and his guitar. It’s a really confident and compelling performance and his vocal is great too – a nice chance of pace after a couple of roof-raising numbers.

Germany: Details about the stage presence of Malik Harris in Turin!

Through a Q&A with GuteFrage.net , the German representative for the Eurovision Song Contest revealed details about his stage presence on the stage in Turin.

In response, Malik Harris said he would be on stage with his keyboard, guitar and electronic drum pad, as we had seen in his appearance in the country’s national final.

The rest of the set will be created by Marvin Dietmann , who will be the artistic director of the German participation. Dietmann gained a reputation as the choreographer of Conchita Wurst’s winning performance in Copenhagen in 2014. Just last year he directed 7 entries (Austria , Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Spain, Croatia and Estonia) and is already in charge of Cyprus and Israel for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest!

Malik Harris added:

“I can’t say much more about the rest, only that it will be very intimate and personal because I see that as most fitting to the song. To me, honesty is what’s most important, because I believe that is what music is about and it has always been of great importance to me.”

During this Q&A, Malik Harris also stated that he would sing “Rockstars” with the rap part included and not the radio version of the song.

Germany will be represented by Malik Harris in Turin with the song “Rockstars”. Malik Harris will compete directly in the Grand Final on May 14th.

Germany: Interview with Malik Harris | With “Rockstars” in Germany 12 Points! (Video)

Following the announcement of his participation in this year’s German national final, Germany 12 Points, Malik Harris speaks exclusively to EurovisionFun and Apostolos Bogiannos and Apostolis Matamis.

Malik is one of the six finalists in the German national final for Eurovision 2022, and will try to represent his country with the song “Rockstars”.

I wrote “Rockstars” last year and a few weeks ago a friend asked me if I would ever consider being at Eurovision and I said “I do not know, but I have the song that works for this purpose”. This is because it is quite personal and something different than what Germany usually does. Why not? It all starts with the right song after all. We grow up and initially live with a childish and carefree sense of life because when we are children everything around us is so simple. And growing up the thoughts and worries come and so have I been in recent years, especially now with Covid, and I recall how happy I was when I was little and how much that changes over time. Thus, the deeper meaning of “Rockstars” is not to live by constantly recalling the past. To keep the good moments from it but to see the good moments of today and to walk according to them.

Regarding his stage appearance in the national final, he stated that:

The staging will be very emotional. It’s the first song I wrote and it made me cry. And I will try to convey its meaning on stage.

Although he likes all the fellow songs, he singles out those of Felicia Lu and Maël & Jonas.

His favorite German participation is that of Lena (2010) ,while from the competition he generally distinguishes the participations of Måneskin (Italy 2021) and Duncan Laurence (Netherlands 2019).

If he chose a Eurostar to work with, it would be Måneskin (Italy 2021).

Malik is half American in origin and thinks it would be a great honor for him if he could present a song live in so many people, representing his country, Germany.

Shortly before the end of the interview, Malik gave us a part of his participation.
