Greece: Statement from government spokesperson on “Asteromata” and the recent tension with Turkey

Earlier today, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis made a statement regarding Asteromata and the tension that has arisen in recent days over the meaning of the lyrics of Greece’s Eurovision 2025 entry and Turkey’s reaction.

Speaking about Turkey’s response to the song Greece is sending to Eurovision 2025, Pavlos Marinakis said:

“The submission process has nothing to do with political intentions—the lyrics do not contain any offensive content. In any case, history is documented and not up for debate.”

It is worth noting that Turkey’s public broadcaster, TRT, is expected to review the song Asteromata, performed by Klavdia, following reports that it references the Genocide of the Pontic Greeks.

Moreover, Eurovision Türkiye highlights a statement Klavdia made on ERT’s show Proïan se idon on January 16, where she said that her Eurovision 2025 song “talks about displacement and refugees.”

BREAKING NEWS: Turkish public broadcaster to file a complaint with the EBU if “Asteromata” addresses the Pontic Genocide

Reactions appear to have been sparked among Greece’s  eastern neighbors regarding Asteromata. According to Turkish websites covering the contest, the country’s public broadcaster is reportedly planning to file a complaint with the EBU if the allegations they have received about Greece’s Eurovision 2025 entry are confirmed.

Although Klaudia, immediately after her victory in the national final on January 30, clarified that her song is not about a specific event but rather about all people who have been forced to leave their homeland due to wars and conflicts, the Turks seem to be displeased.

According to the Eurovision Türkiye account, which has over 50,000 followers across all social media platforms, Turkey’s public broadcaster TRT confirmed in a conversation with them that they have also received these reports and intend to investigate the matter. If they determine that Asteromata is about the Pontic Genocide, they will file an official complaint with the EBU.

The Pontic Genocide refers to the mass killings and forced deportations of Pontic Greeks by the Ottoman Empire between 1914 and 1922, as part of a broader campaign against Christian minorities. While Greece, Armenia, and several other countries officially recognize these events as genocide, Turkey denies that a genocide took place, arguing that the deaths were part of the broader chaos of World War I.

Despite not participating in the contest since 2013, TRT remains an active and influential member of the EBU. Eurovisionfun will, of course, continue to monitor the situation and keep you updated on any new developments.
