Denmark: 500 songs submitted for Eurovision 2024 – Fundamental changes aimed at breaking the non-qualification streak!

Additional information regarding the Danish national selection for Eurovision 2024 was revealed by DMGP Director Erik Struve Hansen during an event hosted by OGAE Denmark today.

For the past three years, the Nordic country hasn’t managed to qualify for the Eurovision final. Hence, the Danish delegation will make every effort in order to choose a strong entry that is both competitive and sufficiently modern to match the contest’s standards.

The DMGP this year will target a younger demographic. As a result, the objective of selecting the entries for the Danish National Selection is to make them appealing to younger generations.

Fundamental changes to DMGP

Approximately 500 applications were received. The selection process that determined the songs that will participate at this year’s DMGP was completed on October 27.

DR will undergo significant adjustments in order to advance to the final following a string of poor outcomes. It also prioritizes choosing performers who can handle the demands of a major event like Eurovision, as well as songs that have potential in both DMGP and Eurovision.

The changes are as follows:

  • Although it is not required, all contenders will have the opportunity to perform their songs with a live orchestra.
  • There will be two voting rounds to determine the winner. The songs that move forward to the second and final round will be revealed during the first round in a random order.
  • The jury will be composed of ten Danish Eurovision experts and ten international Eurovision experts from the five most recent winning countries. The international jury will select an entry that best embodies both the international music scene’s trends and the spirit of Eurovision.
  • All eight contestants will sing live, unplugged acoustic versions of their songs on television on February 10, one week before the final.
  • The songs for DMGP 2024 will be revealed approximately three weeks prior to the contest, in late January, while the hosts will be revealed in December.

Reiley won last year’s national selection and went on to represent Denmark in Eurovision 2023, despite not winning the televoting in DMGP. He sang “Breaking My Heart” in the second semi-final but did not manage to qualify for the final, receiving just 6 points, all of which came from Iceland.

Norway: The MGP 2024 line-up is ready, according to Head of Delegation Stig Karlsen!

Norway has confirmed that Melodi Grand Prix will remain as the country’s selection process for Eurovision 2024. The submission window closed for those interested in submitting an entry on August 31 and the process that will filter down the entrants, who will participate in the main event, is currently progressing.

As you read in one of our past articles, Stig Karlsen, the Head of the Norwegian delegation, had announced that the Grand Final of Melodi Grand Prix 2024 will take place on February 3 2024. Stig posted on instagram and now confirmed that the line-up of the acts that will take part in Melodi Grand Prix 2024 have already been selected:

What a thrill to call up artists and their team to let them know that they have been chosen to participate on Norways biggest music show.”

The assessment of the submitted acts is still ongoing and we expect the reveal of MGP’s 2024 line-up in early January, probably on January 5. Moreover, since there was no announcement made, we are still expecting the announcement of the venue that will host MGP 2024 in early 2024.

Melodi Grand Prix 2024 timeline

As far as we are concerned, MGP 2024 will include three semi finals, with six participants each. From each semi final, probably three acts will advance to the Grand Final of February 3. Hence, bearing in mind the aforementioned MGP 2024 structure, we conclude that the dates of Melodi Grand Prix 2024 will be as following:

  • First Semi Final: January 13, 2024
  • Second Semi Final: January 20, 2024
  • Third Semi Final: January 27, 2024
  • Grand Final: February 3, 2024

A few hours ago, the second semi-final of MESC 2024, the national final of Malta for Eurovision 2024, was completed!

For the third year in a row, the island country is using the format of a national final and is organizing Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2024 (MESC), through which they are going to select their representative for the 68th Eurovision Song Contest.

36 artists are going to take part in Malta’s selection process for Eurovision 2024. A process consisting of semi-finals and the Grand Final, will select the artist and the song that is going to represent Malta in Malmö.

The second semi-final was took place a earlier today, with the presentation of nine more songs through a TV show, named XOW. Both the jury and public vote were completed.

You can listen to the first nine songs in the videos below:

When all semi-finals are completed, the twelve songs with the highest scores will advance to the Grand Final. The next semi-final will take place next Friday!

Until we learn who is going to represent Malta in Eurovision 2024, let’s remember their song for last year’s contest. The Busker were the winners of MESC 2023 with the song “Dance (Our Own Party)” but they didn’t manage to qualify for the Grand Final ending up in 15th place of the First Semi-final with 3 points:

Greece: National final and new commentators for ERT?

Given ERT‘s openness to modifications, enthusiasm arose when Marina Satti was named the Greek representative for Eurovision 2024. Typologies reports that although the method of choosing the song that Marina Satti will perform in Malmö is still up in the air, a national final is not out of the question. Furthermore, the same article suggests that the Greek national proadcaster considers changing the show’s commentators.

Typologies reports in an article on the most recent events around Greece’s Eurovision 2024 participation that ERT is preparing a number of adjustments in light of this year’s 50th anniversary of Greece’s debut participation in the competition, which took place in 1974.

The article also disclosed that ERT is considering the possibility of switching up the show’s commentators. If this decision is carried out, it is not surprising because ERT has already made actions along these lines in the past. Specifically, when ERT chose its Eurovision representative internally the majority of the time, broad adjustments were made to the contest’s approach to revitalize the brand.

Will ERT’s approach to Eurovision be restarted given the selection of Marina Satti and the 50th anniversary of Greece’s participation?

Italy: The new date of San Remo Giovani!

Italy’s public broadcaster, Rai, announced today that San Remo Giovani 2023 will not be held on December 13 as originally planned. Rather, December 19 is scheduled as the day for the popular festival’s final.  The reasons behind this modification are yet unknown.

San Remo Giovani is a sub-category of San Remo, where new artists are vying for a place in the February festival.

This year, 564 entries were submitted for San Remo Giovani. The largest proportion of this year’s participants comes from the Lazio region, followed by Lombardy and Sicily. Among the participants are 520 soloists, of whom 334 are men and 186 women. In addition, the list of participants includes 44 bands.

Of these candidates, 49 were selected for the next stage of the process, following a vote by a special jury chaired by Amadeus, the artistic director of the last five editions of the festival. The shortlisted artists will go through an audition process in the next few weeks.

At the end of the auditions, 8 artists will be selected, who will compete in the final of Sanremo Giovani 2023, which will be held at the Sanremo Casino Theatre, on 19 December. To these eight artists will be added four from the San Remo area, who will also be selected by the Rai special committee at the end of November.

The artists who win the first three places at the San Remo Giovani 2023 will be entitled to participate in the 74th San Remo Festival, the winner of which will, if they wish, have the opportunity to represent Italy in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.

Last year Italy was represented by Marco Mengoni, with the song “Due Vite”, finishing in 4th place with 350 points.
