Norway’s HoD predicts that Auto-Tune will soon be allowed in Eurovision!

Stig Karlsen, the head of the Norwegian delegation, stated in an interview with the “Euro Trip Podcast” that Auto-Tune would unavoidably be incorporated into Eurovision in the upcoming years.

This regulation was first put into effect for Melodi Grand Prix 2023, the national final through which Norway’s participation in Liverpool came about.

More specifically, he stated:

“I think it’s misunderstood and I think Eurovision will have to do it because the music industry will demand it”.

“The public think about Auto-Tune as making people who can’t sing into pop stars. That’s what you can do if you’re in a studio environment. If you’re putting someone on stage and you ask them to sing live you can’t make that person a great singer if they’re not”.

“The Auto-Tune used in MGP is optimising the sound… making it sound like a professional product like every other television show in the world”.

Germany: Extended deadline for submissions and the first artists

The deadline for submitting applications for “Das Deutsche Finale 2024”, the national competition through which the country’s representative for the upcoming Eurovision contest will be chosen, has been extended, according to an official announcement from Germany’s public broadcaster NDR. Consequently, prospective artists now have until October 15 to submit their suggestions as opposed to the initial deadline of October 5.

The rest of the rules, which are covered in our pertinent article, remain unchanged.

Furthermore, the first potential artists have been revealed:

Melissa Mantzoukis

Greek-German singer Melissa Mantzoukis, gained popularity in Germany as a result of her participation in Idol 2022. She attempted to represent Greece in the contest this year with the song “Liar,” which she did not manage to do, despite receiving a strong first-place rating from the audience committee of 70 people. The song that she submitted to NDR, based on what we know, has nothing to do with her participation this year.

ALLY

Allison Bonnefoy, better known as Ally, has already tried her hand at the Eurovision stage, through her participation in the Austrian national final in 2015. Her most recent works are electronic in nature, such as “Humanity,” which is also one of her entries for “Das Deutsche Finale 2024”.

Apollson

Apollson is a rising star in the German music industry who has found considerable success on streaming services. In a video posted on TikTok a few days ago, he expressed interest in participating in this year’s German selection process by using the hashtag #EurovisionGermany2024.

Florian Suerie / ARTISTWITHOUTANAME

Florian Suerie recently announced his interest in entering the competition by sharing an acoustic version of his potential proposal on his personal Facebook page. The song has currently been recorded in both English and German, but it has not yet been released in its final form.

Spielhagen

The 14-member choir Spielhagen has taken the tagline “Club meets Choir” and specializes in performing disco music. The song “Love On The Dancefloor (Oh Lala Love)” was recorded by six of them and serves as their proposal for “Das Deutsche Finale 2024”.

Germany was represented this year by Lord of the Lost and the song “Blood and Glitter”. The band, which is well-known in Germany, came in last place overall, with a total of 18 points. Will Germany be able to recover from its string of poor results and move to the left side of the leaderboard?

Eurovision 2024: Stig Karlsen confirms that there was no decision made on reducing the jury power!

Norway’s Head of Delegation, Stig Karlsen, who has previously defended the need to limit the power of jury in favor of the television audience, confirmed to The Euro Trip Podcast that no such decision has been made.

During the summer Stig Karlsen had revealed his plans on proposing to the EBU the alteration of the voting system, strengthening the weight of the television audience’s power on the total outcome.

The jury system at Eurovision should definitely be evaluated and the discussion is very welcome. There has been a difference (in the results) between the judges and the public vote in the past, but this year it was extremely wide. People obviously had a different winner. The fact that a jury of 185 people should have as much power as millions of viewers is questionable.

Stig Karlsen,  Norway’s head of Delegation

During the Eurovision Workshop that took place in Berlin on September 11 and 12, an Instagram story posted by Stig Karslen was enough to cause loads of comments, but also questions about whether the Head of the Norwegian Delegation finally managed to persuade with his proposal.

Stig Karlsen does not confirm that any alteration on the 50/50 percentage has been made

Speaking on The Euro Trip Podcast, Stig Karlsen denies the rumor that he managed to convince his colleagues and especially the Reference Group of the Competition (which is in charge of deciding), to change the 50-50 system. When asked about the story in question, Karlsen said:

It was just a success of getting a schnitzel.

Nevertheless, Karlsen insists that the public should have a greater say in the final result and while he thinks that the presence of national juries is needed, he believes that a 60-40 system in favor of the television audience would be fairer.

His opinion on the voting system is strongly connected with his country’s course in the contest the previous years. Norway since 2016 has received 332 points from the jury and 826 points from the viewers.

Netherlands: Douwe Bob has submitted two entries for Eurovision 2024!

The Netherlands has confirmed its 2024 participation and furthermore has initiated its selection process, which will be, as usual, internal. Interested artists were invited to submit their entries back in July with the submission window closing a few days ago. A record of more than 600 songs it is known to be submitted and at a later stage reviewed by a professional jury, which will select the next Dutch act.

Douwe Bob’s involvement in the selection process was first rumored in July. Now, it is confirmed that the ex-Dutch participant from 2016 is the co-writer of Numidia’s submitted song for Eurovision 2024. Numidia is a 24 years-old Dutch-Moroccan artist, who is best known for participating in The Voice of Kids, reaching the finals as well as in Best Zangers, where she was a co-participant of Douwe Bob.

Douwe Bob seems really excited about the song he co-wrote, mentioning that:

The song is in English but it also features the Berber language. The song is about connecting and looking beyond what we are taught. It’s a very connecting song. Open your eyes and we are all one, that’s the main message.

Meanwhile, it is reported that Douwe Bob has also submitted an entry himself, which indicates a possible Eurovision return as a singer. However, Douwe Bob said he would be prepared to withdraw his entry if it meant that Numidia could travel to Malmö.

Douwe Bob represented The Netherlands in Eurovision 2016 with his song “Slow Down“, finishing in the 11th place.

The national broadcaster of Austria, ORF, is expected to announce in December the artist who will represent the central-european country in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden.

ORF’s scout Eberhard Forcher posted yesterday the below comment:

“The day before yesterday was the deadline for submissions to the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. WOW ! Unbelievable, how many great songs have come in the last few weeks. Over 60 ! Most of them are still active scouting . Peter Schreiber and my smallness have been on broadband since June probing & motivating . . . . Now the editors will invite the 15 (?) best acts to the ORF Zemntrum for video casting. The clips will then be released to the juries and the ORF will announce its choice in December at the latest. The idea of the planned public voting cannot be implemented this year for legal reasons. So much for that !”

Luxembourg: Submission window closes with 459 songs for Eurovision 2024!

One of the most important events of the year, is undoubtedly the return of Luxembourg to the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, after 30 years of abscence!

The country’s public broadcaster, RTL, has announced that both artist and song will be selected through a national final, which is set to take place on January 27. Back in July, RTL had commenced the live auditions of artists who are interested in participating in the national final, without having a song in their possession.

The application platform was then opened for artists who already have a song or composers who wanted to submit their songs, which was open until yesterday, October 1 at midnight.

A while ago RTL announced the number of applications it received and it is more than impressive. In detail, the broadcaster received 459 song applications for the national final! RTL thanked everyone who submitted their suggestions and emphasized that the songs amount to around 23 hours of music.

What we know so far about the Luxembourgish selection is that Josh Island submitted a song and some information on the 100 singers that took part in the auditions.

Luxembourg looks reaady for a spectacular comeback. Do not forget that it is one of the most successful countries, with five victories in its history. A title we think they want to defend!
