Eurovision 2024: The schedule of the second day of rehearsals (Sunday 28 April)!

With the Malmö Arena opening its gates yesterday for the rehearsals of the 37 participating countries, the action continues today with the remaining countries of the first semi-final taking to the stage for the first time.

With no major changes expected this year, the rehearsals for Eurovision 2024 are expected to take place in the upcoming week. Rehearsals are divided into two phases, the first which will run for four days from today until Tuesday 30/04 and will include the initial first rehearsals of all countries taking part in the two semi-finals of the contest and the second which will run from Wednesday 01/05 until Saturday 04/05 and will include the second rehearsals of the countries in the two semi-finals as well as both rehearsals of the countries competing directly in the Final, namely the Big 5 and the host Sweden.

Last year’s changes in the way the rehearsals are covered are maintained this year, as the Press Centre opens on the Monday after the first and second rehearsals.

As a consequence, the information we will have for the first week of the contest will come exclusively from the material provided by the EBU to accredited journalists, as well as through the Live Blogs on Reddit and the short videos on TikTok.

Today’s Schedule

Eight countries are set to take to the stage at Malmö Arena for their first rehearsal, with Iceland and Hera Björk “kicking off” on Saturday morning. The detailed schedule for the second day of rehearsals of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest is as follows (Mentioned in CET/Swedish Time):

Eurovision 2024: Croatia’s First Rehearsal!

Closing the first half of the Semi-Final 1 – and today’s rehearsals – is Croatia with Baby Lagsana taking the stage for his first rehearsal, with his song Rim Tim Tagi Dim.

Who is Baby Lagsania?

Marko Purišić or with the stage name Baby Lasagna was born on 5 July 1995 in Umag of Croatia. He is a singer-songwriter and music producer. The artist wanted to follow his mother’s steps because she was a teacher among other family members and he expressed that he would have most likely become a teacher too if he had not decided to pursue a musical career instead. He did, however, work as a children’s assistant in elementary school for a year until quitting to study public relations in Zagreb. Baby Lagsania had previously also studied tourism and sound engineering. From 2011 to 2016 and from 2018 to 2022, Lagsania served as the guitarist for the Croatian rock band, Manntra. The band also participated in Dora 2019, securing the fourth position with the song “In the Shadows” with a total of 12 points.

Five years later he returned at Dora as a solo artist, which he won Dora and became the current representative of Croatia at the song contest. Rim Tim Tagi Dim is a self-described as a humorous song about the economic emigration of young Croatians, it was written solely by the artist in his bedroom.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

The staging is quite similar to the Croatian National Selection. Baby Lasagnia wears giant frilly sleeves, a traditional costume among with make up in his eyes and a chocker. The overall performance has been polished up for Malmö Arena, the LED wall has changed but the main idea from Dora has been still there, the dancing neon cats make an appearance right at the end.

The dance moves also have changed, but there is not a major change on that. There are big smoke jets during the violin part of the song and in each chorus there are fire jets and cracker fireworks before the last bridge. Croatia’s performance was the biggest pyro display of the day by far.

Below you can watch a small clip from the Croatian first rehearsal, once it’s published on TikTok:

The second rehearsal for Croatia will be held on the 1st of May, when we will know how things will appear on screen for Baby Lagsana.

The next artist to come up on the Malmö Arena stage is LUNA, representing Poland, with the song “The Tower”.

Who is Luna?

Aleksandra Katarzyna “Ola” Wielgomas known by her stage name as LUNA was born on 28 August 1999 in the capital of Poland, Warzaw. LUNA is a Polish singer and songwriter. The Tower” is about a journey to self-realization and self-actualization from the negativity humanity faces. The song uses the metaphor of a tower of negativity and limited potential, urging the listener to topple the tower with strength.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

At the begining of her performance, LUNA appeares between two huge neon chess rooks that roll across the stage. Luna’s outfit consists of a shiny white PVC-esque red cape with huge pointy shoulders. During her performance, the cape is removed to reveal a long white dress with red horns.

LUNA is accompanied by three faceless dancers dressed in black, white and red respectively. There is a moment on the song that the singer lies on the LED floor and appears to ride a red horse using sci-fi technique to impress the audience. Pyro was spotted in the last run through durring the final chorus.

Eurovision 2024: Ukraine’s First Rehearsal!

Next up on stage after the lunch break, we will be seeing the female duo alyona alyona & Jerry Heil on their first rehearsal as the representatives of Ukraine in this year’s competition with “Teresa & Maria”.

Who are alyona alyona & Jerry Heil?

Aliona Olehivna Savranenko better known by her stage name Alyona Alyona is a Ukrainian rapper and songwriter and she was born on 14 June 1991. Alyona started writing rap music in the middle of the 2000s, with multiple attempts to reach a wider audience. Her initial stage name was Alyona Al.kaida. Alyona is a very controversial figure to the ukrainian society as she was praised in the a Vogue issue as “Ukraine’s most unlikely rap star”. She also has been dubbed “the new rap star of Ukraine” and “the sensation of Ukrainian rap” by Ukrainian media and “The New York Times” likened her to the famous female raper Azealia Banks.

Yana Oleksandrivna Shemaieva, known as an artist by Jerry Heil, is a Ukrainian singer, songwriter and YouTuber. She was born on  21 October 1995 in a city outside Kyiv called Vasylkiv. She began her career after launching her YouTube channel in 2012, publishing vlogs and musical covers. Jerry began her professional music career in 2017, releasing her debut EP. Since starting her YouTube channel, she has accumulated more than 34.9 million views and 395 thousand subscribers.

Teresa & Maria is a self-described as a song about hope inspired by Roman Catholic saint Mother Teresa and the Virgin Mary, the song was written by Alyona, Heil, Anton Chilibi, and Ivan Klymenko. The song won Ukraine’s National Selection for Eurovision called Vidbir earlier this year.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

The folk ukranian duo appears on the stage with beige costumes, specifically Jerry Heil wears a ethereal floaty dress that blends perfectly with the shadowy figures on the LED wall and the choral backing vocals. The performance feels hymnal and haunting.

The performance from the ukrainian national selection has been elevated, there is a rock prop on stage, such as Serbia’s staging. The prop reminds a bit from last year’s Armenia’s prop on “Future Lover”. In rap part of the song, while alyona alyona emerges from stage right to deliver her rap interlude, Jerry Heil climbs the prop via a wind machine. At the final reherarsal, there was no pyro for Ukraine’s performace, but there is a beautiful overhead shot at the end that incorporates their two bodies into a multi-person visual.

Below you can watch a small clip from the Ukranian first rehearsal, once it’s published on TikTok:
