Eurovision 2025: New changes ahead | What is Martin Green pinpointing about them

Everything that occurred during the Eurovision Song Contest of 2024 ignited a long course of new developments and changes. The new director of Eurovision, Martin Green highlighted them in an interview with The Euro Trip Podcast.

What is set to come in force?

The new regulations bear as their focal point the artists’ well-being and the aiming to cultivate a setting as satisfying and solidarity-driven as possible. More particularly, reduced media access to the rehearsals appears to be a key point, in order to eliminate any distractions for the contestants and for them to feel more comfortable on stage. In essence, this policy is said to follow the example of other major global events, in which Martin Green has much previous experience and in which, media access is more limited.

“This has all come from delegations and artists themselves asking to have more time to get more confident with their performances before the cameras are let it – and who can blame them?

In Eurovision there is unprecedented access. When we live our lives under constant access, we have to look closer at that for the wellbeing of the artists.”

Thus, there seems to be a clear plan about no-filming zones of the artists, to secure their safety and well-being.

In the meantime, the signing and adherence to a code of conduct will be mandatory, as an additional policy of reinforcing the participants’ security and protection. Any violations of this code will be revised by Martin Green, Martin Österdahl, members of the leadership group of the Eurovision Song Contes and of the Reference Group.

“Codes of conduct don’t work if it’s one strike and you’re out. There has to be process and discussion.

Eurovision is a friendly space and a community space.”

The regulations of the code of conduct, as well as the optimised rehearsal plan is scheduled to be unveiled by the EBU in the future.

What did he say about Martin Österdahl?

If there was one person who was highly critized about the incidents that took place in the 2024 Contest, that was Martin Österdahl, the Executive Supervisor. Martin Green appears positively adjacent to Österdahl, supporting him emotionally and practically.

“Martin has changed this contest into something unrecognisable from what it was – and only for the better. And for that he should only ever be applauded.”

The two had co-operated in the past and more specifically, at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023, when Martin Green was the Managing Director of BBC.

“Martin and I had a great relationship in Liverpool. I was on the other side of things.

My job now is to sit over the team and to run the whole team now, and hopefully to build the team.”

What do you think about the changes that are going to be introduced at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest?

Notable Returns

One of the most notable events is the return of Montenegro to the competition. After two years of absence, Montenegro returns to Eurovision with a sense of optimism. The country opted for a national selection process, Montesong 2024, to choose its entry. The winner, ΝinaŽižić, has been chosen to represent Montenegro with the song Dobrodošli.

Meanwhile, The Netherlands have also confirmed their participation in 2025. Earlier, the country had made waves by hinting at a possible withdrawal from the competition. However, following reassurances regarding participant safety and the appointment of Martin Green as the competition’s executive producer, AVROTROS, the Dutch broadcaster, has reversed its decision. Despite this, Joost Klein, who was disqualified just before the Grand Final in Malmö, has declined the opportunity to perform at Eurovision again. Furthermore, the Dutch act for Eurovision 2025 will be chosen internally by AVROTROS.

Countries that remain off the contest

North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Romania will be sitting out of Eurovision 2025, citing financial reasons as the cause for their absence.

Eurovision is a significant financial commitment for many countries, and the rising costs of participation, including the production of national selections, are undoubtedly a factor in these decisions. It remains to be seen whether these countries will return for future editions of the contest.

The 69th Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Basel, Switzerland, following Nemo’s victory in Malmö at Eurovision 2024. The competition is set to take place on May 13-17, 2025, with the Grand Final scheduled for the final night.

Eurovision 2025: Stricter rules for artists and mandatory political neutrality like the Olympics

The Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel is set to introduce an innovative commitment to fair play, inspired by the Olympic Games. Following the controversies and protests that overshadowed the contest in Malmö, Bakel Walden, chairman of the contest’s supervisory board, announced the new rules in a statement to the German Press Agency.

Fair Play and the Olympic Model

Participants in Eurovision 2025 will need to follow a code of conduct similar to the Olympic Oath taken by athletes. This commitment aims to foster an atmosphere of respect and neutrality, ensuring the contest remains a space free from political or personal agendas.

“Negative behavior will not be tolerated,” Walden stated. “Violations will lead to warnings or even access restrictions. There are areas where freedom of expression has limits, especially when it affects others.” He emphasized that, just like the Olympics, neutrality is essential for the Eurovision’s success.

Addressing the 2024 Protests

The push for stricter rules emerged after the tumultuous contest in Malmö, where the atmosphere was significantly affected by anti-Israel protests. Beyond the demonstrations, incidents of hostility and offensive remarks toward the Israeli performer created a divisive climate.

Walden expressed concern that if participants and fans continue to openly express opposing beliefs, the cohesion of the contest could be jeopardized. “If this trend continues, Eurovision simply won’t work anymore in three to five years,” he warned.

A Vision of Unity

The new measures aim to preserve Eurovision’s legacy as a celebration of diversity and unity. Participants will be required to commit to a fair and safe environment, respecting the inclusive spirit of the event and ensuring it remains a platform for music and culture free from divisive actions or hate speech.

With Basel hosting Eurovision 2025, these regulations represent a significant step toward reinforcing respect and neutrality at one of Europe’s most beloved cultural institutions. Fans and participants hope that this approach will restore harmony to the contest and safeguard its tradition as a unifying cultural celebration.

Conclusion

Practically, all of the above means that the EBU is determined not to allow incidents in Basel that could inflame tensions, whether caused by statements or actions from artists, accredited journalists, or delegation members. Political neutrality will be mandatory for everyone accessing the contest venues. As mentioned earlier this summer, the EBU’s model will follow the environment seen at the Paris Olympics, where athletes, stakeholders, and spectators alike demonstrated respect for all sides. These international events aim to bring people closer, not resolve global issues.
