Eurovision 2024: Austria’s First Rehearsal!

The moment for Austria’s first rehearsal has officially arrived, as Kaleen sets the mood with her song “We Will Rave”!

Who is Kaleen?

Performing has always been an integral part of Kaleen’s life, considering she has been doing it ever since she was little and has gained great experience as a singer, dancer and choreographer. Thus, she has shined at numerous national, European and international dance championships.

However, Kaleen is no stranger to the Eurovision Song Contest. She contributed as a stand-in singer for the rehearsals of Eurovision 2018 and also, as a dancer and choreographer for the interval acts. Moreover, she supported a few acts at last year’s edition and, as for Junior Eurovision, Kaleen took the responsibility of the creative direction of Spain and Bulgaria in 2021 and the overall stage direction in 2022.

The rehearsal

Austria’s Kaleen is here to remind us that if heartbreak is the problem, rave is the solution.

Staging-wise, there’s an inverted pyramid made of metal scaffolding hanging above the middle of the stage, that shoots lasers, giving the stage a warehouse rave vibe. She starts the performance wearing a long white coat with a train, but that’s dispensed with as soon as the bass kicks in, revealing a silver sparkly leotard and thigh boots. She has four male backing dancers, wearing black cargo pants, sleeveless jackets and oversized wraparound shades. With Kaleen they deliver a full-on dance routine that covers the whole stage.

There’s also a RUM-DE-DUM-DA-DA hip swivel move. Genuinely wish it was possible to explain what this track FEELS like at full volume in the arena – it’s very much a full body experience.

PYRO UPDATE! Smoke and steam jets, and Kaleen tried a different (and much fluffier) white coat. No idea which will make it through to second rehearsals – we’ll find out later in the week!

Kaleen: “The whole performance will be a dance break!”

Kaleen is ready to set Malmo’s stage on fire with her song “We Will Rave“!

In a recent interview she talked about her previous experience in Eurovision both as a stand-in singer (Cyprus, Finland 2018) and also as a creative director( Spain 2022). She is now ready to represent her country Austria in this year’s contest and she spoiled some details about her performance:

“People often ask me if there will be a dance break. Well, I like to think that the whole performance will be a dance break. Yes, there’ll be a lot of dancing. I am saving it all for Malmo.

We held back in the music video so it could explode in the live show. The music video was a world on its own. Maybe a version of a rave, of me having a good time or just being able to get lost in the moment which you’ll definitely see on stage, just from a different perspective!”

Austria will perform sixth on the second semifinal fighting for a ticket in the Grand Final with the song “We Will Rave“!

Eurovision 2024: Dan Shipton to Direct Germany, Austria, and Cyprus!

Dan Shipton will be directing three countries in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Specifically, Black Scull Creative, owned by Dan, his husband Ross Nicholson, and their collaborators Jay Revell and Paul Gardner, will be responsible for the television production of the entries from Austria, Germany, and Cyprus.

Speaking to The Euro Trip, Dan Shipton revealed:

We have Austria, Germany, and Cyprus.

We are very excited about these countries and we are very close to them.

We turned down several collaborations this year to dedicate more time to family, but we couldn’t miss out on Eurovision because it’s our passion.

Shipton has been the creative director of many entries in the past decade and was the main creative director of Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool. Also, in 2022, he worked with four countries, while in 2021, he collaborated with seven. Shipton and Nicholson had to reduce their collaborations for this year’s Eurovision as they are expecting their first child. Marvin Dietmann will also be collaborating with them on the three entries in Malmo this year.

Kaleen, this year’s representative of Austria at Eurovision, is married to Dietmann and is a close friend of Shipton.

Kaleen and I have been friends for years.

The song is a banger and has very nice elements. It’s wonderful, her vocals are amazing, the choreography is fantastic, and the song is perfect.

It has something different from what you would expect from a typical Eurovision song. What we have prepared will excite.

17-year-old Silia Kapsis, who will represent Cyprus with “Liar,” has already started working with Shipton and his team to prepare her performance for Malmo.

The song is fantastic. When her team sent it to me, I listened to it, listened to it again, listened to it for a third time, and I really liked it.

As an artist, she is amazing. Vocally, she is great. The choreography is wonderful. She definitely has the potential to stand out.

The Eurovision stage has been designed by German designer Florian Wieder, who has designed seven stages at Eurovision since 2011, including last year’s in Liverpool.

Whatever Florian designs is amazing.

It’s wonderful to have the audience around you. The cross-shaped stage will compel people to rally around it.

It’s up to us, as creative directors, to find a way to capture something different and guess what the result will look like to do something that will stand out. The stage has many possibilities.
