Malta: Alexander Rybak to take the stage at MESC 2025!

The Grand Final of MESC 2025, from which Malta’s representative for the 69th Eurovision Song Contest will be selected, is approaching, and the first guest has already been announced—none other than Alexander Rybak.

Alexander Rybak was crowned the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 with the song Fairytale, in Moscow. Naturally, the singer is expected to perform the song that brought him victory on the stage of the Grand Final of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2025.

The final of MESC 2025 will take place on Saturday, February 8, at 21:00 CET (22:00 Greek time) on TVM, with hosts Valentina Rossi, Davide Tucci, and Pauline Agius. Malta’s representative in Basel will be determined through a combination of public voting and jury decision.

The Second Semi-Final of MESC 2025, held at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Valletta, has just concluded, with eight artists punching their ticket to the Grand Final on 8 February, when we will find out who Malta’s next Eurovision representative will be. The Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2025 presentation was helmed by Pauline AgiusDavide Tucci and Valentina Rossi, with Emmelie de Forest (Eurovision 2013 winner), Claudia Faniello (Malta’s representative at Eurovision 2017), Richard Edwards (Malta’s representative at Eurovision 2014 as member of Firelight) and Janvil (Malta Song For Europe 2005 contestant) being the guests of the show.

The participants

In the second semi-final, the remaining twelve artists presented their proposals for Eurovision 2025 in the following order:

  1. Kelsey Bellante – “365
  2. Dario Bezzina ft. Żeppi l-Muni – “Għażliet
  3. Kelsy Attard – “Love Me Loud
  4. Miriana Conte – “Kant
  5. The Alchemists – “Rubble & Stone
  6. Martina Borg – “Yo Listen
  7. Nathan – “Concrete
  8. Kurt Anthony – “Miegħek Biss
  9. Kantera – “LalaRataTakeke LalaRataKabum
  10. Krista Šujak – “Unheard
  11. Stefan Galea – “Lablab (Talk Talk)
  12. Miguel Bonello – “Breaking the Cycle

The competitive part

Kelsey Bellante – “365

Kelsey is the first to open the show for tonight’s show with a bop. The stage is bathed in white lights, and the whole look can be described as simple but beautiful. Wearing a sparkling outfit and accompanied by four dancers, she gives an incredible performance and gets the crowd going.

Dario Bezzina ft. Żeppi l-Muni – “Għażliet

It’s the turn of the duo Dario and Żeppi to take to the stage. Yellow lights bathe the singers, while at the same time the LEDs are shades and patterns of sand. Vocally they are quite solid and offer a moving performance. At the end, fireworks also appear from the roof of the stadium.

Kelsy Attard – “Love Me Loud

Next up to claim one of the eight tickets is Kelsy, with a powerful ballad. The stage is filled with red and black colours, while flames and smoke appear on the LEDs. Dressed in a black dress, she performs her song quite well, but it is not clear if it will be enough to get her through to Saturday’s Final.

Miriana Conte – “Kant

It’s time for one of the favorites, Miriana, to step on stage. She wears a green dress and is accompanied by 5 dancers, also dressed in green , while the LEDs show a mountainous landscape in purple. At one point, the singer’s dress is removed to reveal a leopard print ensemble and she presents a dynamic vocal and dance performance.

The Alchemists – “Rubble & Stone

The Alchemists” take to the stage, with the audience cheering before they even start performing. The stage is bathed in lights, hot LED colours, fireworks and smoke and the band seem to be enjoying their performance. Vocally they are very good and all indications are that they won’t struggle to win one of the eight tickets.

Martina Borg – “Yo Listen

It’s Martina’s turn to take the stage and perform her song. She is accompanied by four dancers dressed in black, while she wears a yellow jacket, on the stage full of lights and blue colours. Vocally she appears very steady and manages to convey the pulse to the audience.

Nathan – “Concrete

Nathan appears on stage on a vertical circular structure. LEDs and lights add warm tones to the performance. Towards the end, vapors appear along with fireworks, making the performance even more impressive. Vocally while there was some instability at the beginning, the singer seems more confident as he enjoys his time on stage.

Kurt Anthony – “Miegħek Biss

Next up is Kurt to present an emotional ballad. He first appears alone on stage and then five other women appear on vocals to enhance his already excellent performance. Space and star images appear on the LEDs, providing an atmospheric performance that thrills the audience.

Kantera – “LalaRataTakeke LalaRataKabum

Kantera take the stage with a traditional, fun performance and the audience is already thrilled with the announcement of their name. The LEDs are dominated by traditional landscapes and motifs, while they themselves are dressed in traditional costumes. Surrounded by plants, they deliver a performance full of energy, proving that they already hold one of the tickets for the Final.

Krista Šujak – “Unheard

Krista’s turn to set foot on the stage, which alternates between warm and cool tones. She knows how to fill the stage and show off her vocal abilities, taking advantage of the changes in lighting and LEDs and manages to get the audience’s applause.

Stefan Galea – “Lablab (Talk Talk)

Stefan is on stage with a very unique song, which blows the audience away. He is accompanied by four dancers, who hold two screens in their hands and with a modern aesthetic he performs his song with a lot of energy. Based on the reaction of the audience, his qualification is a given.

Miguel Bonello – “Breaking the Cycle

The last contestant is Miguel, who sings a dark ballad. He is accompanied by four dancers and his choreography combined with the dramatic and contemporary aesthetic of his performance captivates the audience. He has some vocal instabilities, that will probably deny him a place in the MESC 2025 Final.

The First Semi-Final of MESC 2025, held at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Valletta, has just concluded, with eight artists punching their ticket to the Grand Final on 8 February, when we will find out who Malta’s next Eurovision representative will be. The Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2025 presentation was helmed by Pauline Agius, Davide Tucci and Valentina Rossi, while  ADONXS, Czechia’s representative at this year’s Eurovision, performed an acoustic version of his entry, entitled “Kiss Kiss Goodbye“.

The participants

In the first semi-final, twelve artists presented their proposals for Eurovision 2025 in the following order:

  1. Mark Anthony Bartolo – “Hideaway
  2. Dre’ Curmi – “Te amo
  3. Raquela – “Silenced
  4. Kristy Spiteri – “Heaven Sent
  5. Matthew Cilia – “Control
  6. Marie Claire – “Wildflower

  9. Adria Twins – “Qalb ma’ Qalb
  10. Haley – “Whistleblower
  11. Victoria – “Juno
  12. Kurt Calleja – “Aziz/a

The competitive part

Mark Anthony Bartolo – “Hideaway

First on stage is Mark with a country ballad. He is seated in the middle of the stage, playing his guitar and surrounded by white flowers. During the chorus he comes to the front of the stage, while vocally his performance seems to lack at some points.

Dre’ Curmi – “Te amo

Next on stage is Dre’ Curmi with an up-tempo track, which gets the crowd going. He is accompanied by two dancers and his vocals are quite good. The show is characterized by a variety of colors and patterns, while the LEDs are mainly filled with floral designs.

Raquela – “Silenced

It’s Raquela’s turn with a dynamic ballad, which despite some instabilities she delivers very nicely. At the beginning she is alone, and then she is accompanied by four female dancers. The whole setting is strongly reminiscent of the spring season, in soft lighting and with flowers as props in the middle of the stage.

Kristy Spiteri – “Heaven Sent

One of the favourites to represent Malta in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, Kristy Spiteri takes to the stage. On a raised structure, dressed in white, with a dark aesthetic and angel figures on the LEDs, she performs her song in a magical way and captivates the audience, proving that she will have no problem qualifying for the final.

Matthew Cilia – “Control

Matthew comes on stage with a rock song, which the audience seems to like. He is accompanied by a drummer and a bassist, and his performance has some inconsistencies. Quick changes in lighting, red and black shades characterize the performance, which because of its nature stands out on tonight’s semi-final.

Marie Claire – “Wildflower

Marie appears alone on stage to perform her song “Wildflower”. The arena is filled with warm colors and the singer performs quite well from a vocal point of view. During the bridge of the song, many hands appear on the LED clapping rhythmically, bringing the pulse to the audience.

Justine Shorfid – “Still I Rise

Next up is Justine with an up-tempo ballad and gets the audience going before it even starts. Wearing a gold dress and giving a quite emotional performance in dark and red lights, she shows that she knows how to set the stage on fire.

JVF – “Festa (No Time for Siesta)

It’s the turn of JVF, who put the audience in carnival rhythms. Dressed in red and with a variety of colours and fireworks on their LEDs they know how to entertain the audience, delivering their song with a lot of energy and few mistakes.

Adria Twins – “Qalb ma’ Qalb

Next on stage are the Adria sisters performing a ballad. They stand on two tiered white structures, dressed in identical bordeaux dresses and perform a very emotional performance on the smoke-filled stage.

Haley – “Whistleblower

Haley appears on stage to perform her pop song beautifully. Dressed in a sparkling outfit and accompanied by two dancers, she starts the presentation by sipping tea, then comes to the main stage to perform the choreography under pink and blue lights.

Victoria – “Juno

Another favourite, Victoria, takes to the stage and gets one of the biggest applause of the night. With a futuristic look and a very dynamic performance, she drives the audience crazy, especially on the bridge of the song, during which she performs an acrobatic choreography with the help of four dancers.

Kurt Calleja – “Aziz/a

Kurt closes the show with an up-tempo track. Against the backdrop of a modern city he performs his song a little weakly, accompanied by three dancers, while at the end the stage is flooded with a plethora of colours, corresponding to the joyful mood of the performance.

The results

The MESC 2025 system foresees two semi-finals, with 12 songs respectively. Eight artists from each semi-final will qualify for the MESC Grand Final.

The winner of MESC 2025 and therefore the country’s representative at Eurovision 2025 will be decided 50% by a jury and the remaining 50% by televote, i.e. telephone calls and SMS.

Malta: Alexandra Alden disqualified from MESC 2025!

PBS, the Maltese broadcaster, has announced a disqualification among the artists set to participate in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2025. Alexandra Alden, who was originally scheduled to perform her song “Magnolia,” has been removed from the line-up following the broadcaster’s decision.

Why was Alexandra Alden disqualified?

As previously mentioned, Alexandra Alden, also a judge on X-Factor Malta, was set to enter the competition for the first time with her song “Magnolia.”

However, PBS discovered that the song had been released prior to the official eligibility date of November 30th. According to the contest’s rules, songs must not be published before this date in order to qualify for Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Due to this breach, Alden’s entry was disqualified and can no longer participate in the Maltese selection.

At the moment, there is no official announcement on whether another artist will replace Alden in the line-up or if the competition will proceed with 23 artists in the semi-finals.
