As every year, the artist and the song that will represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest will be selected through Melodifestivalen. The submission deadline for the popular Swedish show ended a few hours ago, with a total of 2794 songs vying to represent Sweden in Basel. In fact, the number of entries increased by 170 songs compared to last year.

What comes next?

After the entries have been evaluated, 30 songs will be chosen to qualify for Melodifestivalen 2025. It is anticipated that these 30 entries will be announced within the next months.

As SVT announced, this year’s Melodifestivalen will be conducted differently. You can read our related article for more information.

Eurovision 2024: Sweden’s second rehearsal!

Marcus & Martinus are the next artists to hold their second technical rehearsal, on the stage of Malmö Arena. The popular Norwegian singers are representing Sweden this year with “Unforgettable”, after winning the national final in the country last March

Who are Marcus & Martinus?

Twins Marcus & Martinus rose to fame as one of Scandinavia’s biggest pop sensations after winning Norway’s ‘Junior MGP’ in 2012.

At the age of 9, their song “To Dråper Vann” hit the top 10 in Norway and was swiftly followed by their biggest hit to date, “Elektrisk”, which stayed on the charts for 66 consecutive weeks.

With over 1.5 billion streams, the duo has gained a massive following and sold out arenas across Scandinavia and topped the charts in their home country, as well as in Sweden and Finland, with multiple hit singles.

Marcus & Martinus won Melodifestivalen 2024, the Swedish national selection for Eurovision 2024, on their second attempt following their second-place finish in 2023 with “Air”. Hence, the duo will now open the Grand Final of May 11 and defend the trophy on home-ground.

The Rehearsal

22-year-old Marcus & Martinus haven’t released an official video for this song, because they didn’t need to – the staging at Melodifestivalen is basically watching a super-polished pop video being made in real time. They’ve brought the same show to Malmö, which means it’s our THIRD BOX OF THE DAY! The staging remains pretty much unchanged, down to the blue and black outfits and four backing singers in wraparound shades.

But what feels entirely different is the scale – the cubes add a new dimension and elevated lighting effects, particularly after the box separates halfway through and the rest of the performance plays out at the front of the stage. From then the LED wall and the cubes go full pulsing neon, and the whole thing has so much bass it pounds through the floor. Hard to imagine how anyone isn’t going to be up and dancing in this arena next Tuesday – this is a certified ‘let’s go to Euroclub’ bop.

Since we’re all about the boxes, we’re wondering what France, Spain and Italy have in store for us…Slimane in a glass cube? Suggestions please….

Later today, a video will be released featuring thirty seconds of footage from the Big 5 and Sweden’s performances. This video will be posted on the official Eurovision YouTube channel after the end of today’s rehearsals.

More information on Sweden‘s performance will be released on Monday 6/5, after the first semi-final dress rehearsal.

Eric Saade’s statement regarding his involvement in Eurovision 2024!

The artists that will perform as the opening act in the Eurovision 2024 first semi-final were revealed by the EBU a few hours ago. Eric Saade, the Swedish representative for Eurovision 2011, is one of these performers. The musician, who is of Palestinian origin, has stated on multiple occasions that he opposes Israel competing in this year’s competition. A few minutes ago, he shared the following statement, regarding his involvement in this year’s competition:

First..

This is a love message.

When you are no longer able to wear a symbol of your ethnicity in our so-called

‘Free world, it is more important than ever for me to participate.

EBU’s handling of Eurovision is disgraceful.

They do not permit any Palestinian symbols inside the Arena, while symbols representing any other ethnicity in the world are welcomed.

Their slogan ‘United by music’ (if you’re not Palestinian) is already a joke. By broadcasting Is*eli propaganda during prime time to the whole world, yet focusing on banning the Palestinian flag?

Therefore, it is more crucial than ever for me to be present on THAT STAGE.

You may take our symbols, but you cannot take away my presence

Love u.

Petra Mede is disclosing details about one of the Eurovision 2024 interval acts!

Through a reel that was uploaded to Eurovision‘s official Instagram account, Petra Mede, one of the hosts, disclosed details about one of the interval acts of this year’s contest.

Specifically, the presenter mentioned, in her own unique way, that she will be participating in one of the interval acts of this year’s contest, which is called “We just love Eurovision too much”. The performance will be comedic in nature and will include dancing and singing. She also added that she would probably not be alone on the stage.

What are the “Interval Acts”?

“Interval Acts” are performances that serve the flow of the contest. They are outside the competitive process and take place after the completion of the appearances of the participating countries and before the announcement of the results.

Petra Mede is considered a fan-favourite. It is no coincidence that Swedish public television chose her to host the contest for the third time in just eleven years.

Many fans rank Interval Acts, which Petra participated in both 2013 and 2016, among the best moments in the history of the competition. Consequently, expectations for Petra’s show are very high!

ABBA World will open in Malmö during Eurovision!

This year marks the 50th anniversary of ABBA‘s legendary victory in the Eurovision Song Contest, where they represented Sweden with the song “Waterloo”. The band’s career took a significant shift with this win, which essentially launched their international career.

So it was expected that this anniversary would be celebrated in some way as part of this year’s contest. Although ABBA themselves ruled out the possibility of performing live at the contest, the EBU and SVT found a different way to include the band in this year’s event

In particular, Malmö visitors will have the opportunity to participate in five activities that make up ‘ABBA World’, offering visitors a unique experience.

ABBA World consists of the following activities:

ABBA the museum

The ABBA Museum uses technology to provide visitors with a range of interactive activities. Fans have the opportunity to participate in a quiz and of course see the costumes, discs and other items of the band.

ABBA Voyage

Innovative lighting and cutting-edge technology combine to create a really unique experience as ABBA performs some of their greatest hits live as digital avatars.

Mamma Mia!

Visitors to Malmö will also have the opportunity to watch Mamma Mia!, the thrilling, record-breaking musical that has been the basis for two highly successful films. Fans will also have the opportunity to attend Mamma Mia! The Party, where they’ll be able to sing and dance to the band’s greatest hits

Polar Music International
With over 60 years in the music business, Polar Music acts as the guardian of ABBA’s catalogue. ABBA’s music is enjoyed around the clock, all over the world. Not a bad result for a tiny label that started out with a group of Swedish folk musicians in the early 1960s

ABBA World will open on 29 April and will remain open throughout the two weeks of the Eurovision Song Contest. Ticketing starts on Friday 22 March at 10:00 CET.

Sweden: From the stage of Melodifestivalen to The Voice of USA!

Ashley (Ash) Haynes, one of the members of The Mamas, participated in The Voice of USA‘s Blind Auditions two days ago.

Although she impressed the audience and the judges with her performance of Tina Turner’s “The Best”, she failed to turn any of the judges’ chairs.

The Mamas served as John Lundvik‘s backing vocalists in Eurovision 2019 and were supposed to perform the song “Move” to represent Sweden at Eurovision 2020. However, the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of the competition. They made another attempt to represent their country in the competition the following year, but unfortunately they finished third in Melodifestivalen, with the song “In The Middle”.

The group, which consisted of Loulou Lamotte, Ashley Haynes, and Dinah Yonas Manna, has since broken up and is pursuing separate careers, however they do not completely rule out a reunion.

You can watch Ashley (Ash) Haynes’ performance in the following video:

The judging panel for The Voice of USA is made up of John Legend, Dan + Shay, Chance the Rapper and Reba McEntire.

Sweden: Zara Larsson interested in being a Eurovision 2024 interval! | What about Melodifestivalen?

Zara Larsson is one of the biggest representatives of Swedish pop worldwide.  She is turning 26 at the end of this year, but she already has a vast career, made her international breakthrough at the age of 18 and she has been involved with acting lately, making her debut at a Netflix film A part of You.

She has declared herself as a big fan of Melodifestivalen and Eurovision and has expressed her wish in the past to take part in Melodifestivalen as an interlude act. Now speaking at Sveriges Radio and Fredrik Hilmered, superstar Zara Larsson just expressed that she eagerly wants to go to Eurovision as one of the interval acts of this year’s contest to be held in Malmö, Sweden:

“I’m eager to do an interlude. Being on Eurovision would be really awesome. It’s by far the biggest program an artist can be a part of.”

But when asked about competing in Melodifestivalen, she sounds quite firm:

“I will never compete in Melodifestivalen. It’s more than just getting the chance to use the awesome stage. It’s the ultimate privilege for me as an artist.”

Has she been asked to do an interlude? She responds:

“I’ve told my management to hound them. We’ll see how it turns out. That would be super exciting.”

Her new album “Venus” gets released on the 9th of February and she sets off for her European tour on the 16th of the same month. No wonder why she’s left a big tour gap between the 16th of March and the 31st of May, if one takes a closer look to her tour dates. She seems to be really keen on participating at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest that is hosted by her home country, Sweden, after Loreen did a double and won last year in Liverpool with the song “Tattoo“.
