Festival da Canção 2025 – SF1 Results

The first finalists of the Festival da Canção 2025 are known. JOSH, Peculiar, Marco Rodrigues, Bluay, Jéssica Pina e Margarida Campelo secured their place in the Final on March 8th today.

Tonight, after the ten songs being performed, the first five finalists were announced, after the Jury and public votes were combined at 50% each:

1. Xico Gaiato – “Aí Senhor!”
2. Rita Sampaio – “Voltas”
3. Du Nothing – “Sobre Nós“
4. Marco Rodrigues – “A Minha Casa“
5. Margarida Campelo – “Eu sei que o amor“
6. JOSH – “Tristeza“
7. Capital da Bulgária – “Lisboa“
8. Bluay – “Ninguém”
9. Jéssica Pina – “Calafrio”
10. Peculiar – “Adamastor“

However, as in previous years, the public and jury scores were not revealed, in order to create suspense for the Grand Final in two weeks’ time. Still, according to current views on Youtube, it can be seen that JOSH’s performance stands out from all the others in the semi-final, with almost twice as many views as Peculiar and Xico Gaiato, suggesting that it was also the performance with the biggest impact on television and on the voting.

Finally, the remaining 5 songs were subject to additional public voting, in order to elect the sixth finalist song to go through to the Final. And, after closed voting, the final song chosen to qualify was “Adamastor”, by Peculiar.

In terms of betting odds, Portugal remains in 5th place on the EurovisionWorld website, demonstrating that expectations have remained high for the various Eurofans who bet money on the Eurovision markets.

Next Saturday, it’s time for the 2nd semi-final, with favorites Fernando Daniel and Henka also participating, inserted in the remaining order:

1. A Cantadeira – “Responso À Mulher”
2. TOTA – “á-tê-xis”
3. bombazine – “Apago Tudo”
4. emmy Curl – “Rapsódia da Paz”

7. Luca Argel ft. Pri Azevedo – “Quem Foi”
8. NAPA – “Deslocado”

Here is tonight’s most viewed performance of the song “Tristeza” performed by JOSH.

Festival da Canção 2025 – PREVIEW

The 2025 edition of the national selection for Eurovision, the Song Festival, is almost here, starting today, live on RTP1, RTP Internacional and RTP Play. And it couldn’t come at a better time. Since January 23, the day all Portuguese songs competing in the selection were released, Portugal has been rising consistently in the betting markets, and at the time of writing this article is the 6th country with the highest level of favoritism to win the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, according to the EurovisionWorld website. And if that wasn’t enough reason to follow this year’s edition of the Festival da Canção, what adds even more hype to this year’s Portuguese participation is the fact that Portugal hasn’t had such a high position in the bookmakers since… Salvador Sobral won the national final in 2017 and, later, Eurovision. However, this fact adds extra pressure to the public and judges of this year’s Festival da Canção, due to the fact that Portugal is such a big favorite, before choosing the song elected to represent the country in next May’s Eurovision, from among the 20 songs that are part of the national selection. Yes, several theories have been created over the last week about which song or songs are creating so much hype around Portugal this year, but there is no absolute certainty at the moment about which is the favorite song of the international public and, mainly, of bettors from all over the world…

JOSH, Henka, Fernando Daniel and Peculiar soon became the preferred artists to represent Portugal in Basel, after their songs were released. Not only are their songs among the most listened to on YouTube and Spotify, but they were also the most commented and shared songs by the vast majority of Eurovision fan groups, spread across various social networks. On the one hand, Fernando Daniel’s favoritism can be explained by the fact that he is one of the most famous male artists in the country, with the greatest commercial success, having previously won the TV program “The Voice Portugal” and currently being a judge on the same program for several editions. On the other hand, JOSH, Henka and Peculiar were completely unknown to most of the Portuguese population until January this year. However, his songs that are competing in the Festival da Canção have received extremely positive reactions among EuroFans.

Starting with JOSH, this artist is not completely unknown to the Portuguese public, as he recently arrived at the The Voice Portugal galas. However, this had not translated into any musical career to date, with the competing song “Tristeza” being the singer’s first single. The singer submitted this song to the Festival da Canção for free submission, being part of the group of 6 songs that were selected in this way, unlike the other 14 composers who were invited by the RTP team. “Tristeza” is perhaps the song that most closely follows what Portugal has been doing at Eurovision recently, and it is also having a huge positive reaction at a European level.

Next up is Henka, the rock-metal artist who is making waves across Europe for presenting a type of song very similar to the song that Ireland represented in the last edition of Eurovision, in Malmo, although this Portuguese song is more accessible in terms of composition than the Irish song, mainly due to its catchier chorus. Furthermore, it is the only song entirely in English to participate in this year’s Festival da Canção. Although it is not very common for Portugal to be represented by a song entirely in English at Eurovision, this has happened once, recently, in 2021, when Black-Mamba took “Love is On My Side” to the international competition, finishing in 12th place in the Grand Final.

Fernando Daniel, as mentioned above, needs no introduction. After winning The Voice Portugal in 2016 and participating with the song “Poema a Dois” in the 2017 Festival da Canção, the year in which he competed as a guest singer against Salvador Sobral and finished in 5th place in the final, Fernando Daniel built one of the most solid music careers in the country, with hits after hits. His return to the “Festival da Canção” as a composer had been expected for a long time, and it was this year that things materialized with the song “Medo”. Yes, Fernando Daniel is one of the favorite artists to win this year’s Festival da Canção due to his legion of fans and the media machine he has working for him! But no, “Medo” is not one of the best songs of his career and it is not the best song at the Festival da Canção this year. Even so, there should be a lot of votes from the public and jury during this edition.

Finally, Peculiar, unknown until then to most of the Portuguese public, performs with the song “Adamastor”, with a very contemporary song and with a brutal staging potential. However, it remains to be seen whether the full potential of the music’s presentation can be materialized on stage. If you can do it, the song will definitely be one of the favorites to win the Festival da Canção. If it doesn’t work out, I still believe that the song can reach Portuguese radio stations. Still, there are a lot of Portuguese sound elements in this song and, therefore, there are a lot of reasons for this song to get a lot of points from the public and the jury, if it manages to have a great performance on stage.

The data has now been released for the start of the Festival da Canção 2025, which begins in a few hours with the first semi-final. And there is a lot of anticipation, especially for this semi-final. Historically, since the renewal of Festival da Canção in 2017, the winner of this national team comes from the first semi-final (Cláudia Pascoal is the only exception, in 2018). Salvador Sobral, Conan Osíris, Black Mamba, Maio, Mimicat and Iolanda, all competed in the Festival da Canção performing in the first semi-final. Of the favorites presented above, two of them are performing tonight, JOSH and Peculiar, as can be seen by the list presented below:

1. Xico Gaiato – “Aí Senhor!”

2. Rita Sampaio – “Voltas“

3. Du Nothing – “Sobre Nós“

4. Marco Rodrigues – “A Minha Casa“

5. Margarida Campelo – “Eu sei que o amor“

6. JOSH – “Tristeza“

7. Capital da Bulgária – “Lisboa“

8. Bluay – “Ninguém“

9. Jéssica Pina – “Calafrio

10. Peculiar – “Adamastor“

Undeniably, the tradition has a strong chance of continuing, due to JOSH’s huge favoritism that has exploded the Internet in recent weeks. Of all the theories regarding Portugal’s favoritism, the safest is that JOSH is the main person responsible for the high expectations for a great result for the country this year in Eurovision. However, will today’s stage performance live up to the hype created around the song? Let’s find out tonight!

Portugal: A record number of entries were submitted for Festival Da Canção 2024!

Back in August, Portugal confirmed its 2024 participation via the “Festival Da Canção” page on Instagram. Along with Portugal’s participation, it was confirmed that Festival Da Canção, a music festival of great significance in Portugal, will remain as the country’s selection format for Eurovision 2024.

The deadline of the submission process was yesterday, October 15. All Portuguese citizens or residents, including Portuguese living outside Portugal, as well as citizens of other nationalities residing in Portugal, could apply.

In total, RTP announced that a record number of 809 entries were submitted through this open submission. The high interest seems totally reasonable, considering the significance of FDC in the national music scene and the relatively successful course of the country in Eurovision the past years.

What’s next?

As far as the Festival da Canção 2024 is concerned, 20 songs will compete.

  • 14 of those will be selected following an invitation by the country’s national broadcaster RTP to creators of various music genres.
  • The remaining six will be selected through this afore-mentioned submission process, which turns out to be really successful as well as highly competitive for the contenders.

The winner of Festival Da Canção 2023 and hence, Portugal’s representative in Eurovision 2023, was Mimicat with her song “Ai Coração”, which finished 23rd in the Grand Final.

Portugal: Participation confirmed for Malmö 2024!

Portugal will be present at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö, Sweden.

A few minutes ago it became known through the official account of the Festival da Canção on Instagram that the country of the Iberian Peninsula will compete this time on Swedish soil, something that had not happened after the 1992 Competition and then in Malmö. For the record, Portugal due to poor results and financial reasons had decided to stay away from the 2000, 2013 and 2016 competitions which coincidentally took place in Sweden.

As far as the Festival da Canção 2024 is concerned, 20 songs will compete, of which 14 will be selected following an invitation by the country’s national broadcaster RTP to creators of various music genres, while the remaining six will be selected through the submission process . The submission process for original and unpublished songs is open from today until October 15, 2023. All Portuguese citizens or residents, including Portuguese living outside Portugal, as well as citizens of other nationalities residing in Portugal, can apply for these 6 positions. The selection of these six songs will be done by submitting the tracks to RTP. These tracks must be available by filling out the form available here.

In this year’s contest in Liverpool the country was represented by Mimicat and her song “Ai coração” which finished 23rd in the Grand Final receiving 59 points.

Portugal: Interview with Jonas | From Eurovision 2008 to Festival da Canção 2022! (Video)

After the announcement of his candidacy for this year’s portuguese national final, Festival da Canção 2022, Jonas speaks exclusively to EurovisionFun‘s Apostolos Bogiannos and Paschalis Barmpoutis.

Jonas is one of the candidates of the portuguese national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 and will try to represent his country with the song “Pontas Soltas”.

I’m releasing an album. I’m starting now. I did musical theater, but my main thing is being a fado singer. It feels like I’m beginning again after all these years. It’s an opportunity for people to know about my music.
Pontas soltas is a protuguese expression about something unsolved. It’s about a relationship that ended in the wrong leaving many issues to be solved. It’s a recurring theme in fado music. This kind of music has mysticism. The song was written especially for FdC and I was invited by RTP to participate.

Apart from being a singer, Jonas is also a choreographer. This is something that can help him with his staging in the national final:

I can’t say much about my staging. It’s a surprise. It’s very connected with fado and with dance. I’m very nervous to be compared to other artists. I’m trying not to see anything on the Internet. I like everything to be united and not seen separately.

Despite being anxious by the procedure, Jonas has already some favorites among the festival’s songs. He prefers the songs by Pongo & Tristany and Milhanas.

FdC changed a lot after the victory of Salvador Sobral. Salvador Sobral was an unusual phenomenon in ESC. Noone expected a very simple and fragile song with just him alone on stage would win. It’s good to see all these different styles and songs. It’s much richer now with huge names of the portuguese music, it gives me more will to participate in FdC.

His favorite portuguese entry is “Desfolhada” by Simone de Oliveira (1969) and of course “Senhora do mar” by Vânia Fernandes (2008), where he participated as a back vocalist. Among other Eurovision entries he likes Netta‘s song (Israel 2018).

Being a back vocalist in the portuguese entry in 2008, Jonas spoke about his experience in the contest and about their pleasant coexistence with the greek delegation.

Just before the end of the interview, Jonas sang a part of his song a capella for the readers of eurovisionfun.

Watch the whole interview with Jonas in the video that follows:
