Sweden: Malmö will not host the Eurovision Song Contest again!

The organization of this year’s Eurovision turned out to be a difficult “mission”, with the host city declaring that it does not want to host the competition again after this year’s edition.

In an official announcement from the city of Malmö, they stated that this year they were faced with an unprecedented, stressful and costly situation in their effort to maintain security in their city during the competition!

The announcement:

“We can’t say we had a good year, but not a bad one either. It was a year with enough intensity that it cost us dearly to be able to ensure the safety of the participants as well as the visitors! If Sweden wins next year and offers us to host the competition, we will definitely refuse! We don’t have the strength and stamina to host the competition again!”

Eurovision 2024 has come to an end, with Switzerland taking the win. On the aftermath of the contest, many delegations are requesting a meeting with the European Broadcasting Union to discuss incidents at the contest.

Breaking News: AVROTROS statement about the incident that led to the Dutch disqualification!

AVROTROS just released a statement about the incident that led to the disqualification of Joost Klein from this year’s Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final! The statement reads the following:

“An incident occurred after last Thursday’s performance.
Against clearly made agreements, Joost was filmed when he had just gotten off stage and had to rush to the greenroom. At that moment, Joost repeatedly indicated that he did not want to be filmed. This wasn’t respected. This led to a threatening movement from Joost towards the camera. Joost did not touch the camera woman. This incident was reported, followed by an investigation by the EBU and police. Yesterday and today we consulted extensively with the EBU and proposed several solutions. Nevertheless, the EBU has still decided to disqualify Joost Klein.

AVROTROS finds the penalty very heavy and disproportionate. We stand for good manners -let there be no misunderstanding about that- but in our view, an exclusion order is not proportional to this incident. We are very disappointed and upset for the millions of fans who were so excited for tonight. What Joost brought to the Netherlands and Europe shouldn’t have ended this way.”

Breaking News | The Netherlands has been disqualified from Eurovision 2024!

Joost Klein, the representative from The Netherlands for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, has been suspended from participating in the event. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has investigated an incident involving Klein. This incident initially led to Klein missing his slot in the show’s penultimate dress rehearsal in Malmo, Sweden.

An official statement by the EBU follows:

The Dutch artist Joost Klein will not be competing in the Grand Final of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

Swedish police have investigated a complaint made by a female member of the production crew after an incident following his performance in Thursday night’s Semi Final. While the legal process takes its course, it would not be appropriate for him to continue in the Contest.

We would like to make it clear that, contrary to some media reports and social media speculation, this incident did not involve any other performer or delegation member.

We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour at our event and are committed to providing a safe and secure working environment for all staff at the Contest. In light of this, Joost Klein’s behaviour towards a team member is deemed in breach of Contest rules.

The Grand Final of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest will now proceed with 25 participating songs.

Will be added as soon as it becomes available

Belgium: VRT interrupts Semi Final broadcast with call for ceasefire in Israel!

Trade union VRT briefly interrupts broadcast semifinal Eurovision with call for ceasefire in Israel. The VRT union also supports journalists in the war zone:

“Moreover, the state of Israel is destroying the freedom of the press. That’s why we’re interrupting the image for a while.” Finally, the union calls for a ceasefire and “stop genocide”.

The socialist trade union ACOD-VRT defends the action.

“We have been watching the events in the Middle East with horror for months now. We are convinced that the State of Israel is committing a genocide and that is why it is outrageous that there is an Israeli entry in the Eurovision Song Contest. Doing nothing, just watching, is no longer an option.”

ACOD-VRT points the finger at the umbrella of public broadcasters that organizes the Eurovision Song Contest.

“Unfortunately, the EBU has made the Israeli entry possible and therefore we have decided to interrupt the broadcast. We hope to send a signal to the Israeli government to stop the fighting and killings, allow international observers and the press to enter and sit down for a negotiated solution.”

VRT management informed

VRT spokesperson Yasmine Van der Borght told the editors of hln.be:

“It is indeed a trade union action. We were informed it was going to happen. Trade unions have the right to take action and do not need permission to do so. I can only say that we have taken note of the action.”

Before the start of the broadcast, there was a small-scale protest at the premises of the VRT and the French-language broadcaster RTBF. About 70 activists denounced the broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest, because Israel is allowed to participate.

In the center of the Swedish city of Malmö, where the Eurovision Song Contest takes place, protests are still taking place against Israel‘s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, Swedish media report. So far, nine people have been arrested. Starting at 4 p.m., more than 10,000 pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched through Malmö. According to the police, this was largely uneventful.

N-VA MP Michael Freilich responds:

“We live in a free country and so everyone is free to protest. The fact that the unions disrupt a TV broadcast for millions of viewers is their choice. Anyone who claims to want to tackle injustice, but does not say a word about the terrorist acts of Hamas and the more than 100 hostages, undermines their own credibility. That’s a missed opportunity.”

Eurovision 2024: Bomb dogs search hotels in Malmö, ahead of Eurovision!

As the Eurovision contest draws closer, security precautions in Malmö have escalated. Hotel guests have been informed that their rooms will undergo searches by bomb-sniffing dogs during the day, according to reports from TV4 News.

The police have confirmed that the event area in and around Malmö Arena will be thoroughly searched using bomb-detection dogs as part of the comprehensive security efforts. Jimmy Modin, the press spokesperson for Skåne Police, clarified:

“It’s not a question of any threat or the like, but we will do this continuously throughout the period that the event is ongoing, starting today.”

Additionally, guests at Malmö Arena Hotel and Malmö Live will have their bags scanned using systems similar to those found at airport security checkpoints. However, the police declined to provide further details about this aspect of their security operations.

“We don’t comment on the details of our work on security for Eurovision!”

TV4 News previously highlighted the rigorous security protocols surrounding Eurovision in Malmö. These measures include the use of reinforcement weapons (equivalent to submachine guns), a ban on bags at the events, and the installation of alarm bars at various entrances.

In conjunction with these efforts, the police are also employing camera surveillance to prevent criminal activity during Eurovision. Jimmy Lindin, head of the camera section in Skåne Police, emphasized the benefits of this technology:

“Through the cameras, we can quickly get a picture of the situation and interrupt criminal acts. What the cameras register is also of great benefit to us when we investigate and hold people accountable for crimes that have been committed.”

The increased camera surveillance is concentrated in key areas, including Malmö Live, Malmö Arena, and Folkets Park. Temporary camera installations on building facades and the use of police drones equipped with cameras further enhance security. Mobile camera trailers are strategically positioned to supplement permanent surveillance efforts.
