Sweden: End of the “Anda Chansen” heat – an extra semifinal for Melodifestivalen 2022!

We will have a general lifting at the Melodifestivalen, which is now moving into the post-Bjorkman era, as the producer who led the festival in recent decades is now on the other side of the Atlantic, having organized the American Song Contest. One of the biggest changes we will see in Melodifestivalen 2022 is the abolition of the second chance round and the well-known duels that existed in them.

An extra semifinal

In statements to Aftonbladet, the new producer of Melodifestivalen, Anette Brattström, reveals that the Andra Chansen round will no longer be in the program of the competition. There will be a fifth semifinal instead.

In the first four semifinals, the two songs with the most votes will advance directly to the final. The songs that will occupy the third and fourth place will compete in the fifth semifinal, but not with the process of duels, as has happened so far.

In the fifth semifinal, the eight songs will be divided into two groups of four and the two songs that manage to collect the most votes in each group will advance to the final.

Melodifestivalen 2022 kicks off on February 5 in Malmo, hosted by Oscar Zia.

Sweden was represented this year by Tusse, with the song Voices, occupying the 14th place in the final:

Sweden: Melodifestivalen odds shortly after the announcement of the distribution in the semifinals!

The announcement of the distribution of the artists in the semifinals of Melodifestivalen 2021, as well as the order of their appearance in them, has caused some differences in the bets.

The last place, in the fourth semifinal for Eric Saade, dropped his odds and brought him to the first place, together with Danny Saucedo, who will also appear last, but in the first semifinal. It is common practice for Christer Bjorkman, who decides the order of appearance, to place in the last place of each semifinal, the strongest participations. Tradition wants the last place of the fourth semifinal to always be the big favorite of Melodifestivalen, although last year in this position was Hanna Ferm, who finally took the fourth place in the final.

After Eric Saade and Danny Saucedo, Dotter follows, Tusse and The Mamas close the top five. Charlotte Perrelli is in seventh place.

Danny Saucedo 4.00
Eric Saade 4.00
Dotter 6.50
Tusse 6.50

Melodifestivalen 2021 starts on February 6 with the First Semifinal and ends with the Grand Final that will take place on March 13. 2021 is the last year that Christer Bjorkman is at the helm of Melodifestivalen. He would very much like to achieve Sweden’s seventh victory and tie Queen Ireland.

Sweden: The favorites at Melodifestivalen 2021 according to the first odds!

Yes, you read that right, the odds for the winner of Melodifestivalen 2021 has already started in Sweden. The betting company Svenska Spel gives the first bettings for victory to the 28 artists that were announced a few hours ago on by SVT.

It is a given that in terms of names, Melodifestivalen 2021 is probably the strongest ever. There are five former winners, as well as many other candidates who have left significant successes in this contest.

Many take it for granted that the victory will be judged between Eric Saade and Danny Saucedo, having a repeat of the Melodifestivalen 2011, when Eric managed to prevail with Popular and then give Sweden a third place in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The bets agree with the surrounding atmosphere and have as their favorite the two 30-year-old artists, but giving the lead for the victory this time to Danny Saucedo! Following are the winners of this year’s Melodifestivalen The Mamas, followed by the winner of Pop Idol Tusse and then we meet Dotter and Charlotte Perrelli. The rest of the contestants have much lower odds. In fact, the betting difference between Danny and Eric is quite large.

Odds for Melodifestivalen winner at Svenska Spen, at 20.30 cet, 3/12:

Danny 3,45
Eric 5,50
The Mamas 8,40
Tusse 12,00
Dotter 13,00
Charlotte 17,00
Anton 20,00
Kadiatou 22,00
Paul Rey 22,00
Frida Green 25,00
Arvingarna 25,00
Alvaro 30,00
Emil 30,00
Sannex 40,00
Moustasch 40,00
Efraim 50,00
Patrik 50,00
Nathalie 60,00
Jessica 60,00
Lovad 60,00
Tess 60,00
Elisa 60,00
Lillasyster 75,00
Wahl & Sami 75,00
Klara 75,00
Clara 75,00
Julia 210,00
Eva & Ewa 210,00

Of course, all of the above are too early and reflect the dynamics of these names in the announcement of their candidacy in Melodifestivalen 2021. A lot will change on the way to the final on March 13, but maybe not… However last year, The Mamas were not among the first favorites and yet even with a difference of 1 point, were the ones who were crowned winners in the end!

Sweden: Eric Saade near his return to Melodifestivalen | Two more names confirmed!

An artist who has been a target of Christer Bjorkman almost every year, seems to be thinking seriously this year. We are referring, of course, to Eric Saade, who in 2011 took third place in the Eurovision Song Contest with Popular. But two more names confirm their participation. These are Arvingarna, but also Paul Rey.

Eric Saade returns to Melodifestivalen

The production team of Melodifestivalen would love Eric Saade and tried to persuade him to participate again this year, but without success. In 2021 things are easier. In fact, a person close to the artist states that it is most likely that we will see him competing in Melodifestivalen 2021. Another Aftonbladet source claims that he has not decided yet, although he has a very strong song in his hands.

If Eric Saade finally says yes, it will be his fourth participation in the Melodifestivalen, which as we said above he won in 2011, then representing Sweden in Eurovision. He was the presenter of the Green Room at Eurovision 2013, in Malme, while he was also the presenter of the Melodifestivalen.

Sixth entry for Arvingarna

The band Arvingarna, which represented Sweden in 1993 at Eurovision, after their victory at Melodifestivalen that year, returns for its sixth appearance. Arvingarna’s last participation in the Melodifestivalen was in 2019, managing to qualify for the final through the second chance. Their entry, I Do, which took 7th place became a great success and so the Arvingarna decided to try again.

Second consecutive attempt for Paul Rey

Paul Rey left the best impressions with his participation in Melodifestivalen 2020, even occupying the sixth place in the final. He will be the fifth artist from this year’s Melodifestivalen to participate again, after The Mammas, Dotter, Alvaro Estrella and Klara Hammarström. He has been preparing for his participation for a long time, hoping that this time he will do even better.

The artists who have confirmed for Melodifestivalen 2021 until now are:

  1. Julia Alfrida  (from the radion contest P4 nästa)
  2. Tusse Chiza
  3. Sannex
  4. Sami Rekik och Wahl
  5. The Mamas
  6. Dotter
  7. Jessica Andersson
  8. Klara Hammarström
  9. Alvaro Estrella
  10. Arvingarna
  11. Paul Rey

Sweden: Loreen with “DNA” at Melodifestivalen 2021?

According to what Scandipop reports today, Loreen will participate in Melodifestivalen 2021 with the song “DNA”. The song will describe how a girl of Moroccan origin transformed into an artist from the western world.

The news about Loreen’s possible participation in Melodifestivalen 2021 was written months ago on Reddit, but today Scandipop actually confirms it. Loreen is also the first rumored participant in the Melodifestivalen 2021.

If the rumors are confirmed, this will be Loreen’s fourth appearance in the Melodifestivalen, which she won in 2012 with Euphoria, where she later also won the Eurovision Song Contest. Her last participation was in 2017 with Statements, which while garnering very positive reviews inside and outside Sweden, failed to qualify for that year’s Melodifestivalen final.

Would you like to see Loreen again at the Eurovision Song Contest?

Sweden: New format for Melodifestivalen from 2022?

In an exclusive interview given by the executive producer of Melodifestivalen, Anette Helenius, to the daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, she refers to the decision of the Swedish public broadcaster to hold Melodifestivalen 2021 without an audience and with all its shows in Stockholm, but also with their intention to change the format of the contest, from 2022!

In Stockholm and without audience Melodifestivalen 2021

Anette Helenius reports that the decision not to hold the regular Melodifestivalen tour in various cities in the country was taken a few weeks ago, taking into account the epidemiological situation in Sweden and in cooperation with the competent authorities. All the necessary measures will be taken, while the artists and those who still participate in Melodifestivalen 2021, will undergo a rapid test upon entering the venue where the contest will take place.

Although it was initially put on the table to choose a city other than Stockholm, it was decided that it would be safer but also more functional to choose the capital, since most people live there and thus avoid extra travel.

The absence of the audience is clearly important, but it will enable SVT to make some choices, which with the presence of the public would be impossible. The presenters have not yet been selected, but may be different each week, wanting to give a separate identity to each of the six nights of the show.

New format from 2022

Melodifestivalen has been running steadily since 1959, when Sweden had to choose its second entry in the Eurovision Song Contest. In 1958, in Sweden’s maiden appearance at Eurovision, the internal selection option was used. In 1967 the name Melodifestivalen was introduced.

Since 2000, Melodifestivalen has been the most popular television program of the year, with more than 4 million viewers annually. It has more viewership, even from the Eurovision Song Contest itself.

Until 1998, the winner was chosen solely by the juries. In 1999, televoting was used for the first time. In 2002 the Melodifestivalen, which until then was one night, introduces the system of four semifinals and the second chance, a format that is still used today.

Annete Helenius gave important news in her interview. In particular, she said that in parallel with the changes that will take place this year in Melodifestivalen due to COVID-19, the production team is working on some other changes, which will be permanent and will be implemented from 2022.

This practically means that for the first time since 2002 we will have significant changes in the format of Melodifestivalen. No further explanations or details were given, so we look forward to it.

We remind you of the detailed program of Melodifestivalen 2021:

  • The 1st semifinal on February 6
  • The 2nd semifinal on February 13
  • The 3rd semifinal on February 20
  • The 4th semifinal on February 27
  • The second chance round on March 6
  • The final on March 13

As usual at the end of November we will have the announcement of the 28 contestants!

Sweden: First 14 songs of Melodifestivalen 2021 have been chosen!

With a photo from the audition process, Swedish Public Television (SVT) informs us that 14 of the 28 songs of Melodifestivalen 2021 have already been selected.

In the four semifinals of the Melodifestivalen 28 songs compete every year. Of these, 14 come from the open application process, 13 are by direct invitation of SVT to established artists and 1 position belongs to the artist selected by the radio competition, “P4 Nästa 2020”.

SVT revealed to us that the 14 songs from the open invitation have been selected, after the committee auditions have been completed. It took a week for the committee to listen to the 2,747 songs submitted for Melodifestivalen 2021!

It is more than six months left before we have a winner in Melodifestivalen 21, but the work is already underway. For one week, our jury has listened through all the entries submitted. The work is now complete and the first 14 contributions have been selected.

SVT for Melodifestivalen 2021

Now the production team of Melodifestivalen will get in touch with popular names of the Swedish music scene to propose one of the 13 wildcards of this year’s competition. We remind you that Julia Alfrida has already secured a place in the semifinals of Melodifestivalen 2021, through “P4 Nästa 2020”.

Stay with us because the nomenclature for Melodifestivalen 2021 is just beginning!

Sweden: Julia Alfrida is the first artist for Melodifestivalen 2021!

We now know the first candidate of Melodifestivalen 2021. This is Julia Alfrida, who was selected by the jury of “P4 Nästa 2020” which ended a while ago, to compete in the semifinals of Melodifestivalen next year.

Every year, Swedish Public Broadcaster selects one of the finalists of the P4 Nästa radio competition, which involves young artists and creators. The one selected for the Melodifestivalen is not necessarily the winner of the competition. This happened again this year, after the “P4 Nästa 2020” was won by Hilde & Erik.

Julia Alfrida will compete in Melodifestivalen 2021 with a different song than she did in P4 Nästa 2020. So far no candidate from P4 Nästa has qualified for the Melodifestivalen final, not even in the second round.

Below you can listen to the winning song of P4 Nästa 2020:
