Switzerland: Internal selection for Eurovision 2023 | Submissions start on August 25th

As the Swiss German speaking national broadcaster (“SRF”) announced today, Switzerland will participate at Eurovision 2023, and its entry will be chosen through an internal selection procedure. As of 12 July 2022, Switzerland is the 21st country which has publicly confirmed its intention to participate in the 2023 contest.

The internal selection committee

Switzerland is once again relying on a panel consisting of 100 people, and an international jury of 20 music professionals. From August 25th to September 8th, songwriters, producers, artists and lyricists are invited to submit their songs for consideration. The Swiss entry for Eurovision 2023 is scheduled to be announced at the beginning of 2023.

The decision of Switzerland not to depart from the previous years’ selection procedure shall not come as a surprise. After the very successful performance of Luca Hänni at ESC 2019 and Gjon’s Tears at ESC 2021, as well as Marius Bear’s final qualification again in Turin, it wouldn’t be wise for the national broadcasters to experiment with alternative selection methods.

What song is the committee looking for?

According to the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest Swiss Regulations, the Swiss entry for Eurovision 2023 should be a “contemporary song that has international appeal and will stand out”. The lyrics should have “a strong, clear and easily understood message”.

The composers and songwriters are also encouraged to submit songs about themes that “reflect current events or those whose content will evoke an emotional reaction or a feeling of recognition” in the Eurovision audience.

What’s your take on Swiss internal selection procedure? Will the new Swiss entry do better than Marius Bear?

Switzerland: Offers to host Eurovision 2023!

Among all the talk about the venue of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, the Swiss newspaper Blick reports that given the current situation in Ukraine, it doesn’t seem possible that a safe contest will be held in the country.

The Swiss Head of Delegation, Yves Schifferle, was asked some questions about the situation and then made an assessment:

“Of course we are worried about how the Swiss delegation will travel to a country where the situation will be uncertain in a year from now. I am sure that EBU will check and evaluate whether Eurovision can take place in Ukraine and if so, under the appropriate conditions.”

Blick.ch then informs us that we can wait for the final decision regarding the hosting in Ukraine, in the summer. Yves Schifferle then hints that he does not rule out the possibility of Eurovision taking place in Switzerland

“If the EBU asked for it, the SRG SSR would have checked whether Switzerland is the right place for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. However, no such proposal has been made.”

So we could not assume that Eurovision 2023 will be held in any of the Central European countries. Although Switzerland would certainly be in such thoughts last year, as a victory for Gjon’s Tears was more than possible. However, at present there is no indication that the EBU will grant the hosting to another country if it cannot actually be held in Ukraine

Eurovision 2022: Switzerland Second Rehearsal!

Next up on the stage of Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is SwitzerlandMarius Bear with the song “Boys Do Cry” is ready for his second rehearsal on the stage of PalaOlimpico in Turin!

Who is Marius Bear?

Marius is a multi-talented musician from Appenzell in Switzerland. In 2016, Bear abandoned his plan of becoming a construction machinery mechanic, in order to tour Germany and Switzerland as a street musician. At one festival, he got to know a famous producer who invited him to New York, and quickly became part of the Swiss artistic and creative arts scene there.

The globe-trobber was on the move once more in 2017, heading to the United Kingdom, where he studied music production at the prestigious BIMM Institute in London. It was this literal journey of self-discovery that ultimately led to the release of his first album, Not Loud Enough, which soared into the Top 20 of the Swiss album charts.

The Rehearsal

Marius’ performance begins with a close up on him. His shots manage to hide the sun behind him as his performance is quite dark. He use some lights on the stage and there are some special lights that light on him and his face. Generally a dark performance with great vocals.

Below you can watch an exclusive preview clip of Marius’ rehearsal:

Switzerland: Οn March 8th to reveal Eurovision 2022 artist and entry!

So far this season, Switzerland have kept lots of Eurovision news under wraps, but we finally have a date for the release of their entry! Switzerland’s representative for Eurovision 2022 – will be revealed on Tuesday 8th March. Their entry will also be released on the same day.

The jury

Some time ago, the country’s broadcaster, SRF, revealed the twenty-three Eurovision special judges who selected the Swiss representative for Eurovision 2022. The jury consisted of individuals who have either competed as singers – songwriters or as members of a national jury in the competition.

As well as the lesser-known national jury members, some former Eurovision acts have sat on the jury to choose Switzerland’s entry – could the entry go two steps further than last year and win the whole contest?

Among the jury, familiar faces include:

  • Ovidiu Jacobsen (Ovi) – Romania 2010 & 2014
  • Tinkara Kovač – Slovenia 2014
  • Gabriela Horn (PÆNDA) – Austria 2019
  • Helga Möller – Iceland 1986
  • Alexey Gross – Belarus national final 2016
  • Gore Melian – Cyprus national final 2009
  • Ludmila Kuts – Belarus backing singer 2011
  • Karl-Ander Reismann – Eesti Laul songwriter

Last year Gjon gave Switzerland their best result in the contest since 1993. “Tout l’univers”  ultimately placed 3rd in the Grand Final in Rotterdam, winning the jury vote and scoring 432 points.

Eurovision 2020: Greek choreographer – director for Switzerland and San Marino at Eurovision 2020?

According to what is written on a greek media website, Zappit, Greek choreographer Nikos Marianos has accepted a proposal to direct the participation of Switzerland and San Marino in the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest in May in Rotterdam!

He has recorded his own unique path, both at the Eurovision Festival, as well as in music and theater, being one of the most successful choreographers and directors of recent years. Nikos Marianos, who is known for versatile and creative talent, having choreographed from demanding  musical such as “Evita”, “Hair” and “Grease”, up to high standard’s Mad Show, accepts another suggestion – a challenge that opens the European music scene to him.

Two countries are claiming the acclaimed Greek, seeking exclusive co-operation for the 65th Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Rotterdam in May 2020. Competition officials in Switzerland but also in San Marino have already contacted Nikos in order to take over  the choreographic performance of the songs that will be selected to represent these two countries in this year’s contest.

San Marino managed last year under his direction the best result  in Tel Aviv, while Nikos already has successful entries in both Greece and Malta. Remember, the director and choreographer has appeared on the Eurovision stage as a dancer in 2005 with Elena Paparizou on Eurovision’s 50-year show, but also in 2009 with Sakis Rouvas and “This is our night”.

Nikos Marianos has not yet given a definitive answer to the officials of the two countries. The NMDF Convention, which holds its fourth year in March 2020 and hosts the 19 most important choreographers around the world is in his high priority this period. However, it is certain that for another year Eurovision will be of particular interest to the Greeks.

Switzerland: Directly assign for the Eurovision 2020

Following Luca Hänni’s successful tour at Tel Aviv, Switzerland’s broadcaster SRF confirmed the country’s presence in the upcoming event in May 2020 in the Netherlands.

After this year’s great result that brought Switzerland to 4th place, the best that has been achieved since 2005, SRF,  decided to follow the same recipe, choosing internally, for the second consecutive year, both its representative and and the song as well.

For this choice, the broadcaster will nominate a panel of experts, composed of 100 members and a twenty-member international committee, to decide who will fly the Swiss flag in the Netherlands.

Interested composers, producers and songwriters can send their entries until September 2. More information about the participation is here.
