Junior Eurovision 2023: Will recent developments affect Armenia’s participation?

Armenia is officially one of the 16 countries that have announced that they will be participating in Junior Eurovision 2023, however recent events in Nagorno-Karabakh make it uncertain whether they will be able to compete in Nice after all.

No final decision has yet been made, as Martin sterdahl, the Executive Supervisor of the competition, stated to 20 Minutes during a press conference held in Nice on Wednesday.

“The EBU will keep track of the unfolding of the really worrying situation”.

Armenia’s participation in this year’s contest will likely be decided in the upcoming days. Although Baku’s 24-hour military operation did not extend to Armenia’s main territory, the country is currently dealing with significant refugee flows that are leaving Nagorno-Karabakh for Armenia after the former was merged into Azerbaijan. Obviously, the country does not place a high importance on competing in Junior Eurovision at this point.

The Ebu should sanction and prevent Azerbaijan from participating in both eurovision contests. They did the same to Russia so why not Azerbaijan. There should not be any special treatment, Armenia and Ukraine are both victims of crimes and should be given the same treatment by the Ebu.

As much as I agree with you, and I am for Azerbaijani being banned from the EBU, the fact remains that Nagarno-karabakh is recognised as Azerbaijani territory, and hence there is no actual basis for the ban. Armenians who lived in Artzakh for thousands of years had to leave their homeland in this tragic event. We must never forget that this mess is due to the internal policies of USSR
