Portugal: A record number of entries were submitted for Festival Da Canção 2024!

Back in August, Portugal confirmed its 2024 participation via the “Festival Da Canção” page on Instagram. Along with Portugal’s participation, it was confirmed that Festival Da Canção, a music festival of great significance in Portugal, will remain as the country’s selection format for Eurovision 2024.

The deadline of the submission process was yesterday, October 15. All Portuguese citizens or residents, including Portuguese living outside Portugal, as well as citizens of other nationalities residing in Portugal, could apply.

In total, RTP announced that a record number of 809 entries were submitted through this open submission. The high interest seems totally reasonable, considering the significance of FDC in the national music scene and the relatively successful course of the country in Eurovision the past years.

What’s next?

As far as the Festival da Canção 2024 is concerned, 20 songs will compete.

  • 14 of those will be selected following an invitation by the country’s national broadcaster RTP to creators of various music genres.
  • The remaining six will be selected through this afore-mentioned submission process, which turns out to be really successful as well as highly competitive for the contenders.

The winner of Festival Da Canção 2023 and hence, Portugal’s representative in Eurovision 2023, was Mimicat with her song “Ai Coração”, which finished 23rd in the Grand Final.
