Eurovision 2024 screenwriter apologizes to Dutch fans!
Edward af Sillén, the screenwriter for Eurovision 2024 who also worked in the 2016 and 2013 editions of the Song Contest, has offered his apologies to the Dutch fans. Before the Grand Final last May, the Netherlands representative, Joost, was disqualified after an incident that took place in the backstage.
Joost disqualification to perform in the final was unprecedented in the history of the contest.
Reflecting on the contest’s aftermath, Mr. af Sillén said he wished they had added a few words to the script for the Dutch fans. In an interview with The Euro Trip, he said:
It was a difficult situation, it had never happened before in the history of Eurovision and it was a minefield. And we still didn’t know exactly what happened so it was almost irresponsible from us to comment on it… But I wish we would have said something like “There was an incident yesterday backstage and a decision has been made and we want to say to our Dutch viewers, we are so sorry for you guys for not being in the Final. We love you and we hope to see you again next year“
Nevertheless, it seems that Edward af Sillén has had a change of heart about Joost disqualification. As a fan points out, the Eurovision screenwriter just two months after the final compared Joost’s disqualification with football player Merih Demiral who was suspended after he made a gesture associated with Turkish ultranationalist.
