Romania: The final deadline for Eurovision 2024 decision, is on January 25!
The list of countries participating in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place in Malmö, Sweden, in May of next year, was made public last month. Romania is not included on the list. With a total budget of EUR 80 million for 2024, Romanian public television faces financial challenges that make its participation unclear.
As we informed you a few days ago, TVR, the public broadcaster, had a deadline until January 22, in order to confirm their decision. However, earlier today, the Romanian website, Fanatik, states that some final extra time was given, and the decision will be taken after a meeting of the council of the channel, until the 25th of January.
Dan Turturică, the General Director of TVR, stated onn this matter:
“We will have a board meeting on January 25. We have a delay from the EBU to give a final answer by the end of this month. We will have the board meeting where we will have a vote. This is not a decision for me to make alone. It’s a decision that has to be put to a vote because it involves some great costs and will be taken by open vote by all 13 members of the Board of Directors. On the 25th, the decision will be put to the vote and after that we will announce the results.”
It is calculated that Romania pays around 180 thousand euros for its participation fee, then adding the cost of the staging and the accomodation of the delegation in Sweden, that add tens of thousand of euros in the budget.
