Eurovision 2023: Malta’s Second Rehearsal!

Malta is here to continue the lineup. The busker are ready to own the stage with their dancing moves, as their party just began. The question here is only one:

Do you want to dance?

The Busker

The Busker is an indie pop band from Malta that was established in 2012. The band comprises of David “Dav.Jr” Meilak, Jean Paul Borg, and Sean Meachen, and their music style features elements of soul, pop, and funk. The band won the Lovin Music Award for the “Best Album of the Year” with their signature sound. They participated in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2023 with their song “Dance (Our Own Party)”, which deals with social anxiety and leaving a party to be with close friends. The Busker emerged victorious in the final after qualifying from the quarter-finals and semi-finals, granting them the opportunity to represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool.

The second rehearsal

While watching Malta’s performance in the arena on Sunday, we did not fully grasp the intricacy of their staging. However, on camera, it becomes apparent that their act is a lively and enjoyable one, and the band executes it perfectly. The performance combines retro funk and pop elements, with a remarkable saxophone hook. The Busker has brought along various props for staging, including a four-part set featuring a party house with a Destiny cardboard cutout, a yellow park bench and a lamppost, a red car, and a tiny room with a sofa.

The band members dance in between each part of the set, creating a clever visual narrative in three parts. Moreover, the act includes a costume change, as the band swaps their chunky sweaters for silver sequins during the final chorus.

In the afternoon, after the completion of all the rehearsals, a video will be released with short excerpts from the television footage of all the second rehearsals!

Eurovision 2023: Norway’s Second Rehearsal!

Are you ready for the official start of the second-rehearsals? Alessandra is about to prove she is the queen of this year’s eurovision. Let’s see what she got for us!

“Nothin’ in this world can stop the spread of her wings”

Alessandra

Alessandra Mele is a young Norwegian-Italian singer-songwriter who won a local talent show at the age of 12. She recently graduated from high school and moved to Norway to study at the Lillehammer Institute of Music Production and Industries. Her debut single, “Queen of Kings,” has gained over 25 million streams. Alessandra won the Norwegian national final Melodi Grand Prix with “Queen of Kings”, which will represent Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. She qualified from the semi-final and won the competition by receiving the highest number of points from both the public and the international jury. Alessandra aims to inspire self-love and encourage all genders and age groups to embrace their inner “queen of kings.”

The second rehearsal

For their second rehearsal, every country is given a time slot of 20 minutes, which is adequate for them to practice their act twice or even three times if it is a simple reset. Recently, Norway’s Alessandra has just completed her rehearsal, and it seems that there were no apparent changes made to her performance from Sunday’s show. She executed the high note perfectly in all three attempts, and the entire act looks as fantastic on camera as it did in the arena. Alessandra maintains the black and gold Viking sass queen persona from the MGP final, wearing a stunning metallic bustier with commanding power shoulders and a black cape.

Sarah Louise Bennett / EBU

She is accompanied by four backup dancers with large glowing sticks, which are set against a background of icy blue lighting. Setting the staging aside, the song itself is a strong declaration of female empowerment, with the drums causing vibrations on the floor of the Liverpool Arena and the whistle note at the end making the roof shake.

Sweden: Smoking effect issues in Liverpool!

The smoke chaos that befell Loreen in the Melodifestivalen continues in Liverpool. After an initial rehearsal, the Swedish delegation has demanded that the BBC solve the problems. The head of the Swedish delegation Lotta Furebäck and Loreen herself spoke about these problems in Aftonbladet.

The head of the Swedish delegation Lotta Furebäck said:

They say that they “totally understand” and will work on it. So it still feels good

This is a first run, we have done this before. I think we’re on the right track, but it’s this smoke thing that I think we need to work on the most, which we’re not really getting to.

The Swedish representative, Loreen, commented:

I would say that we are getting quite a lot of smoke. It’s still a smoking party. We need to work on that. There are lots of details.

After finishing rehearsals in the arena, she spoke to the BBC to emphasize how important it is to solve the problem of the smoke.

Just now here before, I had a conversation with the competition producer about the smoke in particular. They say they “totally understand” and will work on it. So it still feels nice. I feel that the BBC and the EBU really understand, they are listening and working on it.

Ahead of Sweden’s arrival, the BBC has carried out technical rehearsals, with stand-in artists on stage for the competing delegations to give feedback on.

We thought there was a lot to work on. They have really taken that to heart, so you can see that things are happening and that they are working forward.

It is our job to keep pushing the process forward. We want to keep the organic feeling, the cinematic and powerful that we had at Melodifestivalen. That is what is most important to us. I think we are well on our way to achieving that.

In the viewing room after the completed rehearsal, Loreen had a lot of comments about things that the production needs to resolve.

We are a whole team behind this. Robin (Hofvander, Melodifestivalen’s picture producer, editor’s note) on picture and so on. We are very keen that the vision is intact. What the Swedish people have sent here, it must be intact. So yes, absolutely. There is a lot that we talk to them about.

As far as the fact that the Platform and the LED screen is smaller than those in Melodifestivalen is concerned, the Swedish representative does not believe that it affects the feeling.

I think it clarifies the narrative a bit. There are some inspirations. Nature, I’m from the Atlas Mountains. This is the tweak made to enhance some stuff. The podium is a little higher now than it was before.

Blanka seems really satisfied and excited about her performance, with the only issue concerning her now being the camera work, which needs some fixes.

It is indeed really interesting that this year’s artists as well as the broadcasters themselves are sharing with us more backstage videos, giving us a better picture of their performances. Especially this year, that the accredited journalists are not allowed to attend the rehearsals inside the press center, the artists themselves are those who keep the fans’ interest.

More information about Poland’s first rehearsal:

The second rehearsal of Poland is scheduled for Friday 5/5 when we will have more details on Blanka’s performance.

Poland with Blanka and her song Solo participates in the 2nd Semifinal on May 11, performing 9th.

Eurovision 2023: Australia’s First Rehearsal!

Next up on stage we will be seeing Voyager on their first rehearsal as the representatives of Australia in this year’s competition with “Promise”.

Who are Voyager?

Voyager is a progressive metal band from Perth, Western Australia, formed in 1999. The band has released seven full-length albums to date.

In 2020 they had submitted a song to represent Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 called “Runaway”, but were eventually not selected as one of the 10 artists competing in the country’s national final.

Last year, the band was selected to take part in Eurovision – Australia Decides and came second with “Dreamer”. In fact, it came in the first place of the televoting.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

This is a great tune to finish off the second Semi-final – with the 80s-style synths leading into a big old rock chorus. It manages to sound distinctively Australian and fabulously Eurovision at the same time, which is a great indicator of how much Australia have rolled themselves in Eurovision glitter since they joined the contest in 2015. Voyager look like absolute pros, and are rocking both the Liverpool stage and those sequinned houndstooth check outfits.

They also have a car on stage, which we saw in the prop store yesterday and wondered who it belonged to. I’m afraid we can’t tell you the make or model. It looks 80s and sporty.

Eurovision 2023: Lithuania’s First Rehearsal!

Next up on stage we will be seeing Monika Linkytė on her first rehearsal as the representative of Lithuania in this year’s competition with “Stay”.

Who is Monika Linkytė?

It could be second time lucky for Monika Linkytė, as she had previously competed at Eurovision in 2015 alongside Vaidas Baumila with the song ‘This Time’.

This year the singer earned herself another opportunity through Lithuania’s national selection show, Pabandom Iš Naujo!, and brings soaring melodies to the Contest with her new entry Stay.

The song is grounded in local folklore, with the lyrics ‘Čiūto Tūto’ often used in Lithuanian folk dances as magical incantations.

Music has been a part of Monika’s life since childhood, and from the moment she first laid her fingers on the piano keys, it became clear to her that music would be a constant companion in her life.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

This is such a captivating ballad, and if the vocal harmonies between Monika and her four backing singers weren’t enough, the pulsing drumbeat pounds through the arena floor, so you can’t help but get involved. The lyrics of Stay are grounded in local folklore, with the lyrics ‘Čiūto Tūto’ often used in Lithuanian folk dances as a magical incantation.

Eurovision 2023: Albania’s First Rehearsal!

Next up on stage we will be seeing Albina & Familja Kelmendi on their first rehearsal as the representatives of Albania in this year’s competition with “Duje”.

Who are Albina & Familja Kelmendi?

Albina Kelmendi has energised the Albanian pop scene with her fierce vocal talent. At just 16, she reached the final of ‘The Voice of Albania’, after all 4 judges turned their chairs in her first audition. Since then, she’s smashed through various song contests across Europe.

The talented vocalist has always been surrounded by song, growing up in a house of professional musicians, and now two generations of the Kelmendi clan are joining voices to perform in Liverpool.

And music really is a family affair – Albina’s mother Albana and her father Bujar fell in love through music. Alongside her brother Albin and sisters Vesa and Sidorela, they will all be taking to the Eurovision stage.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

Albina gives it all the vocals from the opening note. “Duje” is such a heartfelt and dramatic song of love and family togetherness, with the family providing beautiful harmonies and some great dance moves.

Like Switzerland on Sunday, the staging for this is the work of Sacha Jean-Baptiste, and the LED wall is all about the black and red of the Albanian flag. There is a lot of pyro, too.

Netherlands: S10 will announce this year’s 12 points!

Last year’s Dutch representative S10, will announce the points on behalf of the Dutch jury during the Eurovision 2023 final. S10 made the announcement on Tuesday via Instagram. More specifically she said:

“I was allowed to distribute the points on behalf of my country”

Regarding last year’s poins, Jeangu Macrooy was in charge of announcing them. AVROTROS introduced this particular tradition in 2016, that is to say that the points will be announced every year by the artist of last year’s participation. In 2019, Waylon refused to follow this tradition. In 2021, Duncan Laurence was replaced by Romy Monteiro, as he got infected with COVID-19.

We remind you that S10 reached the eleventh place in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, singing the ballad “De Diepte”.
