Eurovision 2023: Belgium’s First Rehearsal!

Just one place before the last one for today and it is Belgium‘s rehearsal, represented by Gustaph singing “Because of You“.

Who is Gustaph ?

Stef Caers, also known professionally as Gustaph, is 42 years old and he comes from the Flemish speaking part of Belgium. He is an experienced artist regarding the contest, since he has already participated before as a back vocalist for Senek in 2018 and for Hooverphonic in 2021. His debut in the music industry began in 2000 while he was studying in at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent and also he used to be a vocal coach.

Gustaph’s participation in Eurovision is considered to be one of the most unexpected participations, since he was an outsider in Belgium’s Eurosong. He was not the winner of either public’s vote (second) or jury’s vote (third). However the combination of the two results gave Gustaph the golden tickret for Liverpool, who actually beat Starlings by just one point.

No matter the fact that Gustaph has generally gathered negative reviews regarding his qualification, his flawless live performances at pre parties may proove the exact opposite, since he is currently at the odds-in’s eighth place for qualification.

The rehearsal

This is such a feelgood track, and Gustaph’s pink and white outfit is incredibly stylish. It’s a love-filled inspo bop about the people who never let us down, though good times and bad. Gustaph has his own flight of stairs, three backing singers, and an LED backdrop of vogueing, drag queens and all the people who make Gustaph’s world a better place. We’re having a Green Room dance, and can’t wait to see the crowd go mad for this next Thursday.

Eurovision 2023: Romania’s First Rehearsal!

The eighth slot from today’s rehearsals belongs to Theodor Andrei from Romania, who is going to perform his song named “D.G.T. (Off and On)“.

But who is Theodor Andrei ?

Theodor Andrei was born in Bucharest, Romania in 2004 and he is just 18 years old! He became widely known by participating in the talent show “Vocea Romanei Junior”, which is the Romanian version of “The Voice Kids”, back in 2017, when he managed to reach the semifinals. Later, in 2020, he took part in the Romanian “X Factor”, where he stopped at bootcamps. Two years later, his debut album named “Fragil” was realised.

After having won the national final of Romania, among eleven artists, Theodor Andrei took the ticket for Liverpool no matter the fact that he was not consiered as the favorite one in advance. However, the public who were 100% in charge of the final result gave him the win.

The rehearsal

So this feels VERY different from the Romanian national finals, staging-wise – Theodor is looking sharp in a bright yellow shorts suit – we saw him backstage earlier, and it looked a lot like he was wearing Pikachu socks – we’ll try to obtain photo evidence.

This is completely different D.G.T. (Off and On) from the recorded version – the first half is stripped-back acoustic, with just Theodor and his guitar and powerful voice. The second half picks up the rock tempo to a performance that feels much more familiar, with Theodor bringing ALL the sass and energy, as well as a bonus dancer for a dramatic finish. NOT what we were expecting today, but definitely one we won’t forget.

@eurovision Yes to the yellow, yes to the Pikachu socks, yes to Theodor 💛🇷🇴 #Eurovision2023 #Eurovision @Theodor Andrei ♬ original sound – Eurovision

Romania’s second rehearsal is about to take place on Thursday 3/5 when people are going to have a “full picture” of Theodor Andrei’s performance on Liverpool’s stage.

Eurovision 2023: Armenia’s First Rehearsal!

The next artist to come up on the stage is Brunette, representing Armenia, with the bilingual song “Future Lover”.

Who is Brunette?

Elen Yeremyan is known in the music industry as Brunette, is an Armenian singer and songwriter born in 4th May of 2001 and raised in Yerevan. She’s active in singing and songwriting at the age of fifteen and she released her debut single “Love The Way You Feel” at 2019. Brunette is also a member of the girl group “En aghjiknery” which it means “ThoseGirlz”. Last year, the singer released many singles which you can find them on the music platforms.

On 1st February, it was announced that Brunette was internally chosen to represent her country to the Song Contest by the National Broadcaster ARMTV.

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

The song starts off with Brunette lying on a sloped stucture that’s been erected at the front of the stage, against a backdrop of swirling graphics. When the rap part starts, the whole stage persence goes off.

Käärijä’s stage performance seems more refreshing and updated in comparison with the one he had in UMK 2023, in February. The wood pallets are still present, but the prop brought to Eurovision stage is noticeable bigger. We can also notice a Käärijä’s mirroring on the led behind him, moving to the beat exactly like him, which sure creates a beautiful effect.

You can read more on Käärijä’s first rehearsal below:

We will see more from Käärijä on Wednesday, when he will have his second rehearsal and the exclusive TV snippets will be uploaded.

Käärijä with his song Cha Cha Cha participates in the 2nd Semifinal on May 9, perfroming 15th!

The first act from Semi-Final 2 to go up in the stage for it’s First Rehearsal is Reiley, representing Denmark, with the pop song “Breaking My Heart”.

Who is Reiley?

Rani Petersen is known in the music industry as Reiley, is the first person from the Faroe Islands to participate in Eurovision Song Contest. Reiley is twenty-five years old singer and he became known as a social media influencer on TikTok in the early 2019, with nearly 11 million followers.

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officially release to the public.

Reiley’s set is different from the national final. He has a really clever triangle pronged revolving structure with each turn presents a room in a different colour as he moves through the doorwaysmaking good use of the LED floor and the projected graphics. Reiley has visuals that are making hearts and emojis from clouds. The whole performance feels like a a dreamlike quality.

Eurovision 2023: Finland’s First Rehearsal!

Closing the First Rehearsals from Semi-Final 1 is Finland, with Käärijä and his Finnish rap song “Cha Cha Cha”.

Who is Käärijä?

Jere Pöyhönen is known in the music industry as Käärijä, which it means someone who rolls or wraps something up. He is a Finnish rapper, singer and songwritter. Käärijä grew up in a neighbourhoud outside Helsinki, while his passion for music kept increasing. He learned how to play the drums and started producing music in 2014. In 2020, he released his debut album called Fantastista.

On January, Käärijä was announced as one of the seven participants in the Finnish National Selection Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2023 where he managed to finish in the first place with a landslide of 539 points (467 from the public and 72 from the juries).

The Rehearsal

Unfortunately this year, accredited journalists don’t get the chance to watch the first and second rehearsals, so we only get the information and content that the organizers officaly release to the public.

It’s known that the acid green bolero jacket from UMK has made it to Liverpool, along with four pink-clad dancers. There’s also a stack of pallets and a huge wooden box and in the begining of the song the singer is inside it, then he climbs on top and throws a few moves before returning to the floor and leading his dancers in a routine.

finland first rehearsal 1

As Käärijä said “It’s crazy, it’s party”, because the lyrics are essentially a bar crawl where Käärijä starts out with a few piña coladas and ends up pouring champagne all over himself, at which point the thumping techno/rap first half transforms into a joyful schlager anthem to the end. What a great way to close Semi Final 1

Eurovision 2023 is music-genre and language barrier free and nothing precludes an Australian rock band of covering a song sung in many Slavic languages, such as Ukrainian, Czech and Bulgarian. Such an interesting promo strategy used by Eurovision 2023 participants!

Voyager with their song Promise participates in the 2nd Semifinal on May 11, performing 16th. Their first technical rehearsal is scheduled for Tuesday 2/5.

Eurovision 2023: The Netherlands’ First Rehearsal!

The Liverpool Arena is busier than ever with the Dutch representatives Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper rehearsing their 2023 entry “Burning Daylight”.

Everything about Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper

Mia Nicolai is an Amsterdam-born Dutch singer who is mostly based in Los Angeles. She kicked off her music career in 2018 with the release of a cover of Glenn Miller’s song “At Last” and has released an array of commercial singles ever since.

Dion Cooper is a Dutch singer who first rose to prominence with his participation in the sixth season of the Voice of Holland in 2015.He released an EP in 2021 and is set to represent the Netherlands this year with the song “Burning Daylight”,co-written with Duncan Laurence among others.

The Rehearsal

Well, this is sad and dreamy and uplifting all at the same time. Mia and Dion are on a small revolving stage, and it creates a beautiful effect as they move around each other against the backdrop of spotlights in the arena. It’s a complex camera set-up that makes the whole performance feel really intimate – if you’re watching live in the arena next week, you should definitely watch the video version too, because it presents a completely different perspective. They are both vocal powerhouses, and the harmonies are really quite special – you can see their costumes on the backstage picture below.

Eurovision 2023: Czechia’s First Rehearsal!

The Eurovision stage is heating up as Vesna from Czechia take over the Liverpool Arena.

Everything About Vesna

Vesna is a Czech folk band which comprises of 6 members, all of which are women. They started their career in 2016 and have released two albums ever since. They won the Czech National Final of 2023 by a wide margin and thus, earned the right to represent their homeland with the song “My Sister’s Crown”,a multilingual female empowerment anthem.

The Rehearsal

We love fierce song of Slavic sisterhood, and the huge bassline on this track sounds amazing in the Liverpool arena. The floor is thumping and what was left of the roof after Israel has now been blown off.

Vesna are performing in matching pink pantsuits, so very different from the bright colours in the Czechia national finals and the official video. The six members of the band perform a super-polished dance routine, and the whole three minutes feels really cohesive and well put together, with bags of female empowerment energy. Choose love over power, people.

Here is a clip of today’s rehearsal:
