Bambie Thug: I am the wildcard Ireland needs! | Interview

Bambie Thug from Ireland gave an interview to Eurovisionfun’s Paschalis. They introduced themselves to us, gave us some hints about the performance in Eurosong 2024 and told us about the message of the song.

About Bambie Thug and their music style

I like to fuse a lot of styles into one. I don’t like to put me in a box. I’m a singer, actor and dancer.

I’m a goth obviously, I love to wear black all the time. I also love theatre. I studied musical theatre in London. I love to create characters and different worlds. I love to play in all aspects of the world.

Why did they decide to participate in Eurosong 2024

We’re tied with Sweden for the wins. It’s been a long time since Ireland has been in the competition and they need a shake. I’m probably the wild card. It’s 50 years since ABBA won and I love them and I thought that I got to do it this year. My friends encouraged me to enter. Hopefully my country vote me in, it will be the right choice!

What is the song about?

I don’t write any music with anything in mind. I just write music. Doomsday Blue is about having your potential overlooked in releationships, in life, in career. It’s about being taken for granted, but also knowing your worth. It highlights perfectly all the facets of me musically from rock to screamy pop to jazz to electro metal. It’s a really fun song. It’s a task really to perform too. It’s not an easy task to sing it, it’s a challenge for me and I love challenges. I believe in a song, I don’t think there is a song that sounds like that anywhere else, so that’s why I decided to enter with it.

How has the experience with Eurosong been so far?

That’s great. It’s nice to talk to so many people and see how well it’s being received. I’m really grateful to be able to show my art to my country. My career is mostly in the UK. Ireland didn’t have a clue and that’s really special to me, being accepted by so many people in my own soil.

What can we expect to see on stage?

You can expect gorgeous costumes and an infectious performance.

Are they a Eurovision fan?

I’ve been watching Eurovision with friends in the UK. My friend Luke Black was there last year and it was cool to see him representing Serbia. There’s always something that I love, a song, the costumes, the spectacle.

Who’s their favorite Eurovision entries?

Conchita Wurst and obviously my friend Luke and Cha Cha Cha.

Would they collaborate with any Eurovision artists?

I would love to collaborate with ABBA!

Bambie Thug’s message to our fans

Please continue to support your little goth gremlin goblin witch in this journey and thank you for all your love. I’m willing to give you something really special! Love and witchcraft!

We thank Bambie Thug for this interview and wish them best of luck in this year’s Eurosong!

Ireland: RTÉ’s financial scandal halted the hosting of an independent national final!

RTÉ, Ireland ‘s public broadcaster, initially intended to host an independent national final, but according to Michael Kealy, the country’s head of delegation, the financial scandal in which the channel got involved last year, prevented the event in question!

Michael Kealy, reports on “The Euro Trip Podcast”, that RTÉ initially intended to organize a separate national final, without having to work with “The Late Late Show”. He states that:

“Our resources hit a buffer for a lot of self-inflicted reasons from the organisation. That suddenly caused a crunch in our ability to spend money on new endeavours. It was a bit disappointing that suddenly the money wasn’t there. I had been hoping that we could look at having a standalone national selection, but once the credit crunch hit us, that really was off the table. There was a fair chance it could’ve happened this year.”

RTÉ was involved in a scandal in June 2023 when it revealed, previously unknown financial deals between the channel and former presenter of  The Late Late Show”Ryan Tubridy.

Along with the admission of the existence of barter accounts and international trips costing more than €100,000, the headline of the scandal was the revelation that RTÉ paid €345,000 more than what had been previously disclosed to Tubridy between 2017 and 2022.

Dee Forbes, the former Director General of the broadcaster, was asked to resign by the RTÉ board. After initially refusing, she was suspended and eventually resigned days later.

Despite the revelation of the scandal, Michael Kealy remains positive that a national final can be held in 2025, without the collaboration with “The Late Late Show”.

“I’m hopeful things may settle down later this year and our finances may be put on a more stable footing and we may hopefully have the money to do something like it next year. Let’s be hopeful.”

This year’s Irish national final is scheduled to take place on January 26 , with the participation of six artists , in a special episode of “The Late Late Show”.

Ireland: The head of delegation does not support the boycott of Israel in Eurovision 2024!

After the statements of the public broadcasters of Norway and Denmark, now also the Irish head of delegation, expresses his opposition to the boycott of Israel in Eurovision 2024.

Speaking on the Eurotrippodcast, Michael Kealy who is the head of Ireland’s Eurovision delegation, agreed with the EBU’s decision and against any boycott of Israel in the contest.

This is not competition between governments – it is competition between public broadcasters. The public broadcaster in Israel is an independent broadcaster like RTÉ. It is independent of the government – it is not Netanyahu’s mouthpiece.

Michael Kealy is also opposed to Ireland withdrawing from the contest because of Israel’s participation in it.

There are many calls to withdraw from Eurovision because Israel is participating in it. This would set a very dangerous precedent if we do this at RTÉ because we are not a political organisation, we are a public broadcaster. I’m not in favor of that.

Ireland make their national selection during a special edition of The Late Late Show on 26 January.
