Moldova: Zdob și Zdub to represent the country in Turin!

The Moldovan public broadcaster, TRM, officially has chosen its entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022!

As it was revealed yesterday, TRM made a decision not to hold a national final linking it to the to the epidemiological situation in the country. The representative was chosen through live auditions! The professional jury and Moldovan state radio and television determined Moldovan entry.

The candidates to represent the country in Italy were:

Who’s Zdob și Zdub?

Zdob și Zdub is a Moldovan folk punk band, based in Chișinău. The band represented Moldova in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 in Kyiv, Ukraine, on 21 May 2005, finishing 6th. They  also represented Moldova in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany, on 14 May 2011 finishing 12th. “Zdob și Zdub” (“Hit the Drum”) musical band was put together in 1994 in Moldova. Before that, the singer Roman Iagupov, the bass-player Mihai Gincu and the drummer Anatol Pugach had together attended a school in a small town from the suburbs of Chisinau, called Straseni. They found the missing musicians during their studies at the Sports College in Chisinau. The line-up of the band was constantly changing: sometimes the band had two singers, sometimes – two guitarists. As a result, one guitarist became a singer, the clarinettist – a drummer, and the drummer – a bass-player.

Moldova: Katy Rain speaks exclusively at Eurovision Fun!

She is young, she is talented and she is one of the favorites to represent Moldova at Eurovision 2022. Katy Rain with Lele, hopes to be the winner of “Selectia Nationala(Moldova)!” and then travel to Turin. Katy Rain speaks for the first time after the announcement of the candidates for the Moldavian national final at Eurovision Fun and we are really very happy to host her!

-Katy, welcome to Eurovision Fun and thank you very much for this interview! First we would like you to tell us some things about you, so that our readers can get to know you better.

Hello EurovisionFun, Hello Greece. I m Katy Rain, a singer and a songwriter from Moldova and I m so happy and listen to my song Lele and you support me. Thank you so much for that. I wish you good luck and all the best.

-How did you decide to participate in Selectia Nationala (Moldova)?

– I created the song LELE from the bottom of my soul, and I didn’t think I’d take part in this contest with it. But unexpected to me was the fact that the listeners were the ones that wanted me to do it. I appreciate the support they offer me and I really hope, I won’t disappoint them. And these aren’t just pretty words: the way the song was received and loved is very important for me and my team. I can feel their want to hear it and see the show live.

-What is the message you want to convey with Lele?

I created LELE as a manifest for the women that ascent to a new level of power. The woman that, no matter the hardships, she keeps her head up and keeps walking forward. It’s a song with a motivational message.

-What should we expect from you on the stage?

Each artist tries to keep their shows a secret, so I’ll apologize in advance but also we won’t open the books. With all modesty, the song is a powerful one and it’s important that the stage show isn’t exaggerated. For this reason, we’re discussing and deciding every detail.

As we know you had sent your song to participate in romanian national final and it was rejected. Who do you feel about that?

About participating for Romania, an unexpected but an incredible thing happened. LELE didn’t pass the song selection round, I don’t know the reason, but for sure it didn’t make me, doubt my song. As proof of this fact, was the listeners reactions, who pushed me to try again in my native country. I thought that that’s Gods want and I decided to try it. The Romanian people who tried harder for this song than I did, made me feel so much love, and confirmed once again that everything is for and about the people. And that has a bigger meaning than any competition. So, no matter how events will develop, I dedicate this participation to the people that believe in my song. My team and I will try our hardest!

LELE, 15.01.2022, Chisinau, @lidiadonici @gloriaflamencoo @garbuz.anastasia @meli_pri12ncess By Katy Rain, Facebook Page

-Which is your favorite Romanian or Moldavian entry?

From the artists that represented my native country…I can’t pick a single one, as I’ve morally supported each and every one that took part in the contest.

-Which is your favorite Eurovision entry?

From Eurovision 2021, my favorite songs were Switzerland and Italy. When it comes to previous years, the songs of Jamala (Ukraine) and Loreen (Sweden) remained in my heart.

-Have you ever visited Greece?

I went to Greece 2 times in my life, and I have the most beautiful memories from there. My biggest love is the sea (I even have a song called Marea-Magnet (the magnet sea) and you have the most incredible and beautiful one, and I can’t wait to come back and meet many new people there!

-Katy thank you very much! Good luck to you and Lele.

Thank you a lot and I wish you only the best!

Eurovision 2022: Here are the results of the allocation draw!

The Semi-Final Allocation Draw for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 took place in Palazzo Madama in Turin. Find out below in which of the 2 Semi-Finals your country will perform and vote in. The annual event was hosted by Carolina di Domenico and Mario Acampa.

The Semi-Final Allocation Draw and Host City Insignia Exchange are key milestones on the path to the Eurovision Song Contest each year.

During the ceremony, Ahmed Aboutaleb, Mayor of Rotterdam, passed on the Host City Insignia to Stefano Lo Russo, Mayor of Turin. The insignia key chain, weighing over 30 kilograms with the new addition of Rotterdam’s insignia, was handed over to Turin. The Italian city is now officially the Host City of the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.

Draw Procedure

The 36 countries competing in the semifinals were divided into six pots, based on the points they have exchanged in recent years. This is done in order to avoid, as much as possible, the alliances and bloc voting that appear every year in the voting.

Allocation Pots

Big 5

With the host Italy, directly in the final, along with the rest of the Big 5 (UK, France, Germany, Spain), the first part of the draw determined the semifinal that the direct finalists will vote.

Will vote in the 1st Semi-Final:

  • France
  • Italy

Will vote in the 2nd Semi-Final:

  • Spain
  • Germany
  • United Kingdom

Their performance in the dress rehearsal will be shown in the semifinals where the six aforementioned countries were drawn to broadcast and vote. This was done at Eurovision 2016 for the first time, for reasons of equal visibility of the countries that are directly in the final and the countries that compete in the semifinals. Essentially, viewers watch each entry twice during the shows.

Allocation Draw

The draw of the countries for the two semifinals had two parts. In the first part, the 36 countries that participate in the semifinals, were drawn in which of the two will compete. 18 countries will compete in both the first and the second semifinal.

In the second part each country found out if it will appear in the first or in the second half of the semifinal that will compete. The exact order of appearance will be determined by the EBU and the producers of the show at a later time.

First Semi-Final (10 May):

1st Half

Eurovision 2022: Pots and Participants of Semifinals Allocation Draw revealed!

The semi-finals draw will take place on Tuesday 25 January at 12:00 CET, from the Palazzo Madama e Casaforte degli Acaja in Turin. At the same time there will be a ceremony of handing over the keys of the contest or as it is widely known, the Host City Insignia from the previous hosts Rotterdam to the Italian organizers.

The allocation draw will determine whether the countries will participate in the First Semifinal (Tuesday, May 10) or the Second Semifinal (Thursday, May 12). Also, again based on the draw it will be determined if they appear in the first or second half of the semifinal. We remind you that the exact order of appearance is announced later by the organizers and after it has first been approved by the EBU.

The draw will be presented by TV presenters Carolina di Domenico and Gabriele Corsi. Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb and Turin Mayor Stefano Lo Russo will be present.

Friends of the contest will be able to watch the draw on Eurovision’s YouTube channel or on Rai’s streaming service.

Semi-final draw: How does it work?

Italy, as the host country, together with the other 4 members of the so-called “Big 5” (France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom) do not compete in the Semifinals, but vote in one of them… so before the competing countries in Semifinals, it will be determined at random which of the Semifinals the Big 5 will be allowed to vote for.

The next part of the draw will determine in which Semifinal and in which half of the respective Semifinal the remaining 36 participating countries will appear.

The 36 countries of the semifinals are selected from 6 different pots:

Pot 1

  • Albania
  • Croatia
  • Montenegro
  • North Macedonia
  • Serbia
  • Slovenia

Pot 2

  • Denmark
  • Australia
  • Finland
  • Iceland
  • Norway
  • Sweden

Pot 3

  • Armenia
  • Azerbaijan
  • Georgia
  • Israel
  • Russia
  • Ukraine

Pot 4

  • Cyprus
  • Greece
  • Malta
  • Bulgaria
  • Portugal
  • San Marino

Pot 5

  • Estonia
  • Lithuania
  • Latvia
  • Moldova
  • Poland
  • Romania

Pot 6

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Switzerland
  • Czech Republic
  • Ireland
  • Netherlands

Drawing countries from different pots helps to reduce the chance of so-called neighbourly voting and increases suspense in the Semi-Finals.
