Eurovision 2020:”We are doing everything to make Eurovision 2020 work properly”

With most of the delegations leaders in Rotterdam for the meeting, the producer of this year’s Eurovision song contest,Sietse Bakker, made a statement that accurately indicated his intentions. The contest should take place normally if the situation in the Netherlands is not derogated from the coronavirus.

“We are monitoring the situation, we are in close contact with all the relevant authorities and we are doing our best to ensure that the Eurovision 2020 song contest is held! Let’s be optimistic – we still have 2 months. We are thrilled to present what we have planned to the heads of delegations from the 41 countries participating in Eurovision 2020. Some of them have participated online, most of them are here with us at #Rotterdam!”

Sietse Bakker

A statement from the meeting was also accompanied by a photo:

The statements of the Eurovision 2020 producer practically mean that at this point of time everything is going smoothly and no action will be taken. Anything that is circulating on the internet to cancel the contest or to hold the door closed was solemnly denied. The time and the competent authorities will dictate the need for action whenever necessary.

Absences from the meeting of the Heads of Delegations

We remind you that apart from the Greek Head of Delegation, the Heads of Delegation of Sweden, Finland and Israel were absent as well.. At the EBU headquarters in Geneva, Jon Ola Sand and other union executives will attend the meeting, after a case of coronavirus identified as an employee of the organization has quarantined all workers.

We are anxiously awaiting the announcements of today’s meeting, which will of course be the official submission of the 41 EBU entries for this year’s competition.

San Marino: Senhit with “Freaky” in Rotterdam

After the internet voting that San Marino put on the two candidate songs for Eurovision 2020, the result came out at midnight on Sunday, March 8th! The song that will represent the country at the 65th European Song Contest in Rotterdam is “Freaky”!

San Marino has kept the tradition of selecting a former representative for the Eurovision song contest this year, after officially announcing – along with the song now – that Senhit, who represented the state in 2011, will find itself representing oldest active republic again in May in Rotterdam.

The 40-year-old singer, who lives in Bologna and comes from Italy and Eritrea, represented San Marino at Eurovision 2011 with the song “Stand By”, but then failed to qualify for the final, despite her beautiful appearance.

Senit is the third artist to be selected for at least the second time as the country’s representative in the competition. Valentina Monetta has participated four times and Serhat two!

Eurovision 2020: Today the Heads of Delegations meeting to be held in Rotterdam

In the shadow of the coronavirus, today’s annual meeting of the Heads of Delegations participating in the 65th Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Rotterdam. Greece, like other countries, will not attend, but will participate in the meeting online.

For the first time in its history, the contest  is so threatened

For the first time in many years the scenario is being planned for the Eurovision Song Contest not to be held on its scheduled date. The outbreak of coronavirus, which is increasing in all countries of Europe  we would say is a rate, has forced many governments to take action. in order to limit the spread of the virus.

Among these measures are the cancellation or closed doors of the organization of mass events, where there is a large concentration of people. A recent example of this was the DMGP 2020 in Denmark, which, although it was normal, did so without spectators.

Absences at the meeting

We are therefore keen to await the Heads of Delegations  present in Rotterdam today and any announcements / decisions regarding the possible impact of the coronavirus on the smooth running of the 65th Eurovision Song Contest on 12, 14 and 16 May in Rotterdam .

We remind you that apart from the Greek Head of Delegation which will be  absent, the Head of Delegation of Sweden, Finland and Israel have announced their absent as well.. At the EBU headquarters in Geneva, Jon Ola Sand and other ] executives will attend the meeting, as a case of a coronavirus identified as an employee of the organization has quarantined all employees.

We are anxiously awaiting the announcements of today’s meeting, which will of course be the official submission of the 41 EBU entries for this year’s contest.

Sweden: “I don’t know if I wanted to go to Eurovision”, Dotter says

The big favorite of yesterday’s Melodifestivalen final was Dotter, who for one point only failed to beat the Mamas. In her statements shortly after the end of the night, she said how happy she was about the love she received herself as well as her song, but also about her uncertainty about whether she was ready for the Eurovision contest. Similar statements were made by Anna Bergendahl, who finished third.

Neither the public nor the committees could decide yesterday which of the two should represent Sweden at Eurovision 2020. The jury scored 65 points for Dotter and Mamas and the public gave them 71 and 72 points respectively.

For the story, it is worth noting that Dotter would win even in the tie, since she had received ten more than the Mamas in the committee (12 were equal).

“I got some minor points from international committees. I was relieved that I didn’t win. I don’t know if I wanted to go to Eurovision. The Mamas deserved it and wanted it more”.

Dotter

Anna Bergendahl‘s statements that took third place at this year’s Melodifestivalen also moved at a similar wavelength.

“It’s hard to describe my feelings right now. I’m so grateful for third place. I won so many this year. I’m so happy for the Mamas. As a listener, I would vote for their song. It’s a great song”.

Anna Bergendahl

The bets, however, did not welcome the Mamas ‘victory very warmly, as Sweden, after many years, is  in the eighth position of winning the contest, the day before the leaders’ meeting at the end of the national finals season.

Hungary: This song would represent the country in Rotterdam

Last night was also the end of the A Dal, the music contest that Hungary had been using for so many years as a national final to choose its entry in Eurovision.

The duo of Gergo Rácz & Reni Orsovai won the A DAL 2020 final. Gergő Rácz was one third of the VIP band that participated in Eurovision with Hungary in 1997 with “Miért kell, hogy elmenj?” 12th place. He also participated in Hungary’s 2011 synthesizer, “What About My Dreams” with Kati Wolf, who finished in 22nd place.

Eurovision 2020: Frustrating betting failure in the national finals

We have a very strange year this year, as in almost all national selections bets have failed to find the winner. Does this mean something for the winners of the May contest?

Betting on the national finals in Estonia, Ukraine, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Italy failed to predict the winner correctly. The only case where the bets were correct was in Iceland and Norway. But let’s look at them in detail.

Betting failures

In Sanremo, Italy, the festival’s opening day was Anastasio with the final winner Diodato just sixth. In Ukraine, betting failure was unprecedented, with only 1%,the Go-A winning 68%, and the end result was different. In Estonia, Jaagum Tuisk was a big favorite with a double chance of winning. But the result was overwhelming in favor of Uku Suviste, who won Eesti Laul with 68% of the vote. Finland has perhaps had the biggest surprise of this season. Erika Vikman with “Ciciolina” was a sure winner for most. With very low odds on bets and millions of views and streamings. She finally came in second behind Aksel Kankaanranta. A big favorite in Sweden was Dotter, who preceded not only bets but also polls and YouTube views. The Mamas, though with higher odds, did the surprise and beat Dotter by one point. Finally, in Denmark, although we had similar performances for the first two songs, at the time of live show, the winning entry was second, from a song not even qualified to the superfinal.

The few successes

The only betting successes at this year’s national finals were in Iceland and Norway. In Iceland, contrary to the forecasts of fans who wanted Iva to win the national final, they correctly concluded that Daði & Gagnamagnið would be the winners of the Söngvakeppnin 2020. The second correct prediction winner came to Norway, with Ulrikke Brandst.

The bets on the Eurovision winner

The winners of the contest are also hesitant, since we do not remember less than two months after Eurovision, the first favorite to have a 5.5 to 7 odds, when at the respective time of the previous years, the the first favorite had odds of even less than 3.

Isn’t there a song that can convince that it can win? Is it about the failures of companies to predict the winners in the national finals? Do they think that the staging of the entries will really overturn current forecasts?

The truth is that this year we have the most bizarre and unpredictable competition and many will change by Saturday 16 May.

Finland: Through UMK country’s representative in Eurovision 2021!

UMK 2020,the process by which Finland has chosen to participate in the 65th Eurovision Contest, was completed last night. Aksel Kankaanranta was the big winner with the song “Looking Back”.

Just before yesterday’s final, Finland’s public television has confirmed that it will use the same way for Eurovision 2021  to choose its entry.

This year, with an open procedure, 426 songs were submitted to YLE to represent the country in Rotterdam.

The music producer of Ylex to be involved in the selection of Finnish entry for 2021 said:

“The open choice for artists and songs by the country’s creators has received a positive response from both the music industry and the Finnish public. We received great songs from many Finnish artists. The end result was to have a great Final. It is our great pleasure to continue the cooperation between Ylex and UMK. Searching for songs will begin in September, so get a chance to start writing songs from now in the spring”.
