Hungary: No intention to participate in Eurovision 2020

Based on what the Hungarian websites report, as well as the country’s public broadcaster (MTV) announcement for “A Dal”, which has been used as the national final for Eurovision since 2012, unfortunately we won’t see it competing in Rotterdam.

This is the fourth time Hungary has withdrawn from the Eurovision contest. The first time was in 1999, for six consecutive years. It returned in 2005, abstained in 2006 in Athens and returned the following year. It last absence was in 2010, when for financial reasons the country preferred to stay away.

As we have reported in our previous article, the A Dal regulations did not mention the Eurovision contest, and some of the regulations were in breach of the EBU regulations, which meant that the A Dal 2020 would have nothing to do with the competition.

This was made official shortly after MTVA made the following announcement, essentially announcing the country’s withdrawal from Eurovision 2020:

The show’s creators preferred instead to organize the national selection for Eurovision, to direct the talent of light Hungarian music to the values they created the festival for. The winner of A Dal will be promoted by MTVA, with many appearances but also participating in the most celebrated domestic festivals. In addition, Petofi Radio will promote the winner, but will also produce its own works.

In Tel Aviv, Hungary was represented for the second time by Joci Papai, but he failed to qualify for the final.

Italy: Sanremo 2020- major changes in voting system| The winner reserves the right to representation at Eurovision!

RAI recently published the regulations of the 70th Sanremo Festival. The winner, with a slight differentiation, reserve the right to represent Italy at Eurovision 2020. The big changes concern the voting system, which is virtually completely different from what was in force until today.

Televoting only at the final

Many of you may remember that this year’s Sanremo festival was marked by the wide divergence of press and specialist voting over that of the television audience. Wanting to alleviate this problem, the festival’s new artistic director, Amadeus, is introducing a new way of voting. Eurovisionfun introduces you that, as simple as possible:

  • Tuesday 4 February 2020
The first ten candidates for the Campioni category will submit their entries. Only the pollboard has the right to vote. *

* The demo committee is made up of 300 fans across Italy who vote electronically from their home and have been specifically selected for this purpose, with demographic, age and other quality features.

  • Wednesday 5 February 2020
The other ten Campioni candidates will present their entries in Ariston for the first time. Only the poll Committee votes again.
  • Thursday 6 February 2020, cover night
The 20 Campioni perform an older participation from the 70-year history of the Sanremo Festival, accompanied by any other Italian or foreign artist they wish. It’s the well-known night of covers. Only the members of the Festival’s live band and vocal singers determine the score this night. In the end, the highest rated contestant will receive the prize of cover

Contrary to what happened in previous years, the score of this night will count toward the end result.

  • Friday 7 February 2020
The 20 Campioni artists will perform for the second time at the festival. However, only the press committee will vote that night. **

** The press committee is made up of all accredited journalists who cover the festival and watch the festival from the roof of the Teatro Ariston.

  • Saturday February 8, 2020, Final
The 20 Campioni are performing for the third and last time. This time we have the triple vote that was in action at previous festivals. Televoting, polling committee and press committee, with televoting accounting for 50% of the results. The overall ranking will be an average of the votes of all nights and various prizes will be awarded.

A second round of voting will then take place with the top three artists voting to select the winner, who will represent Italy at the 65th Eurovision Song Contest if he wishes so. The voting system in the second round will be the same as in the first round of voting on the fifth night.

Changes in rating

As you can see, there are enough innovations in this year’s voting system. On the one hand, after the inconvenience  set up at Sanremo 2019, the panel of experts is completely removed, whose results were in stark contrast to the results of the public and accounted for 20% of the result. The press committee and poll committee will evaluate the songs on different nights and only in the final we will have the well-known triple voting of Sanremo.

The big differentiation of course comes on the night of the covers. The important thing is that after many years the members of the orchestra and vocal singers will play a significant role on the final result, since in addition to being the ones to score on the night of the covers, their score will be counted towards the final result, despite the fact that the contestants will perform different songs than their regular entries.

The winner of Sanremo has the first reason for Rotterdam

For another year, RAI intends to send Sanremo winner to the Eurovision Song Contest. A prerequisite is, of course, that he himself wants it. If the winner of the Sanremo 2020 does not wish to represent Italy in Rotterdam, then Italian public broadcaster reserves the right to choose any other artist of the Campioni category, on its own criteria.

We have a slight change here, as RAI asks the 20 major Sanremo 2020 contestants to clarify by the first night of the festival on February 4, whether they want to join Eurovision or not. This means that RAI will know on Saturday night, February 8, 2020, whoever won the prize, its representative at the 650 Eurovision Song Contest.

We remind you that the 20 artists of the Campioni category will be announced in a special broadcast by Amadeus on January 6th. The 70th Sanremo Song Festival will take place at Teatro Ariston in the small town of Liguria, San Remo, from February 4 to February 8, 2020.

Eurovision 2020: Rotterdam urges Europe to “Open up”|The official slogan of this year’s Contest

We all watched this morning on the official AVROTROS twitter account, Songfestival, a mysterious post with a video-teaser featuring Dunkan, last year’s Eurovision winner in Tel Aviv, wondering “What is about?”

Of course, most of us immediately realized that the organizers of this year’s contest were simply preparing for the official slogan of ESC 2020.

Suspicion that it was not too late to be verified as just a few hours later Rotterdam revealed the coveted slogan of this year’s event, via a new post:

https://twitter.com/songfestival/status/1187424982005104640

So,Rotterdam tells us to “Open up”…Open up to music, Open up to new ideas, Open up to reality, Open up to Eurovision!

As Dutch broadcaster’s producer,  Sietse Bakker explained later:

“We have looked for a theme and slogan that reflect what the Netherlands stands for and which the Dutch can identify with; a country with an open mind to the world, where we speak our mind, with respect for each other. We also found it important to choose a theme that reflects the spirit of our times. People are concerned about increasing polarization and freedom isn’t as self-evident for everyone as it should be. With the slogan ‘Open Up’, we warmly invite people to open up to others, to different opinions, each other’s stories and of course to each other’s music”

Jon Ola Sand, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest for the EBU, also, stated about the slogan:

“Open Up is the perfect slogan for the Eurovision Song Contest as it celebrates its 65th edition. In 1956, only 7 countries could watch the competition and since then we have opened up to the whole of Europe, to Australia and now, via streaming, to the whole world. The values of the Eurovision Song Contest are universality and inclusivity, and our proud tradition of celebrating diversity through music. Now we can add a new one – that of openness.”

Spain: Blas Cantó to sing in Spanish at Eurovision 2020?

Blas Cantó is one of the first singers to be announced for the Eurovision 2020 in Rotterdam. RTVE, Spain’s public broadcaster, for the first time after 2015 selects its representative with direct assignment.

In an interview on the Europa Press website, the 28-year-old artist revealed some early information about the song he is about to perform in the Ahoy arena. Specifically, he stated:

“An attempt is made to interpret the song in English, as this will enable Europe to understand me. However, it is not necessary for people to understand what I am singing. The music is universal”

Still,he continues:

“I don’t want to sing a ballad but not to have a party on stage. On stage, I probably won’t be alone, but I’ll have someone with me. It all depends on the song we will choose”

Blas Cantó is 28 years old and has become known in Spain as a member of boyband Auryn. He is considered one of the most popular artists of his generation and his selection is certainly a pleasant surprise, as Spain has not accustomed us to select artists. It is not the first time it has been associated with the contest, having participated in the Spanish national final for Junior Eurovision in 2004, and in 2011 tried his luck at the national final for regular Eurovision with Auryn.

Ireland: Linda Martin starring in the official video clip for Junior Eurovision 2019

Almost a month is left for the Junior Eurovision 2019 in Glivice, Poland. Ireland’s public broadcaster has recently released the video clip of “Banshee”, the Irish act in the contest. Surprisingly, we watched Eurovision 1992 winner, Linda Martin, in the lead!

Anna Kearney won the Irish National Junior Eurovision final “Éire 2019” and will represent Ireland at the Eurovision children’s competition. She will perform the song “Banshee”, hoping to bring Ireland its first victory in this institution.

Irish Public broadcaster thought a clever way to call attention to its entry. She put Linda Martin in the leading role in the video.

The video clip is full of Irish forests and seas. It goes back to the Middle Ages, so Anna Kearney’s relative ambivalence is justified. Throughout the video we see a mysterious woman who does not reveal her identity by wearing a cape, which also hides her face. Only at the end the mysterious woman revealed herself, and we see that she is Linda Martin.

The Netherlands: Floor Jansen of “Nightwish” gives her answers about Eurovision 2020

Floor Jansen,”Nightwish” singer, in a recent tv interview, expressed her interest in a possible entry to the Eurovision Song Contest. In a radio interview yesterday (22/10), she clarified whether she would be interested in representing the Netherlands in the competition to be held in Rotterdam in May.

Yes to Eurovision, but not to 2020

Floor Jansen says no to her possible entry into the Contest, though as she explains, this cannot happen in 2020, as she has obligations both as a solo artist and with “Nightwish”, as a tour with therm is scheduled for next year.

“It would an honor for me to have  such a proposal (to represent the Netherlands at Eurovision), but I could not now! I have my own tour this time and in 2020 we have scheduled concerts with Nightwish”

Floor Jansen Nightwish singer

At her 38th, Floor Jansen has already had an important career. She has been the singer of “After Forever” and since 2012 she has been the lead singer of “Nightwish”, a band with a significant worldwide career.

Greece: ERT’s new meeting on Eurovision| This is how the Greek entry will be selected! EXCLUSIVE

ERT held its third meeting on planning how to choose Greek participation in Eurovision 2020 yesterday (21/10).

The meeting was attended by the new administration, as well as the new program directors and, of course, ERT International Relations Manager, Ms. Maria Koufopoulou. Greek public broadcaster has received suggestions on how Eurovision 2020 will be handled by people outside ERT, who have experience and positive results in the contest.

In the near future, ERT will announce a committee, which will undertake to propose to the Board of Directors how to select the next greek delegation. That was the basic decision of the last meeting.

As we stated in our previous articles, the possibility of an open national final (with free entry) seems to have been definitely ruled out. Whether an artist will be nominated, such as this year with Katerina Duska or a small number (no more than 3-4), will be demonstrated along the way, based on the suggestions put forward by the committee.

ERT begins its journey to Rotterdam with dreams and optimism, for something better than it did this year in Tel Aviv with “Better Love”. Stay tuned for all the details!
