Eurovision 2024: Mass calls for boycott of Eurovision!

The final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is just under six months away. After Loreen‘s victory with the song “Tattoo” last May, the competition will take place in Malmö.

Israel as part of Eurovision Song Contest

Israel has been a part of Eurovision since 1973 and has won the contest four times. They are not the only non-European country participating. Australia and Armenia are examples of recurring non-European participants. Countries such as Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan also have the opportunity to compete but have chosen not to do so. Non-European countries have the opportunity to participate due to their membership of the EBU.

Despite the fact that Belarus and Russia are located in Europe, they cannot participate in Eurovision today as they are excluded from the EBU.

Activists call for a boycott of Eurovision

Now, several campaigns are underway on social media calling for a boycott of Eurovision, due to the participation of Israel. Ida Helene Benonisen is a Norwegian activist who fights for the rights of the Sámi and LGBTQ people.

“I think there is a double standard in excluding Russia while allowing Israel to continue to participate in the competition, despite the fact that they are violating international law – something even the UN has pointed out. Europe should show that we do not support their actions.”

In a post that has received a quarter of a million views on Tiktok, she explains how member states can be urged to refrain from sending entries to the competition if Israel participates:

“During my time at the Norwegian MGP in the before Eurovision 2022, I realised that the member states’ threat not to participate if Russia was involved, played a crucial role in the decision to exclude Russia from the competition”

Controversies surrounding Israel’s participation in Eurovision

The last time Malmö hosted the music competition, in 2013, the chairman of the Left Party in Malmö wanted to ban Israel from participating. At the same time, the Israeli embassy appealed to the city of Malmö to increase security after the violent riots that occurred in 2009 in reaction to the tennis match between Israel and Sweden in Malmö. After the music competition, the Israeli delegates reported that they were subjected to anti-Semitic threats. In 2016, the Palestinian flag was banned from the music competition. In 2019, the Icelandic entry was fined after displaying a Palestinian banner during the competition in Tel Aviv, Israel.

What will happen in Malmö next May?

The EBU has still not given a final decision on which countries will participate in Malmö next year, but the plan right now is for Israel to participate as usual.

Karin Karlsson is the City of Malmö‘s overall project manager for the Eurovision Song Contest. She had the same role in 2013.

“In 2013, we took safety into account. But in 2024, it’s a much more complex security situation. It’s an issue we work on every day.”

Karin Karlsson emphasizes that it is not the City of Malmö that decides who can compete, but that all countries that compete are welcome to Malmö. At the same time, there should be room for democratic protests, if desired.

“There are many forces that want to create a nice folk festival here in Malmö. At the same time, we are a democracy and it is important to show that.”

The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is organized in collaboration with the city of Malmö and will be broadcast from Malmö Arena on Tuesday 7 May (semi-final 1), Thursday 9 May (semi-final 2) and Saturday 11 May (final).

Sweden: Carina Berg and Björn Gustafsson will host Melodifestivalen 2024, according to Aftonbladet!

A few moments ago, Aftonbladet‘s Torbjörn Ek revealed the hosts of the shows of Melodifestivalen 2024!

Carina Berg and Björn Gustafsson will host the shows of the tour next year, according to Aftonbladet‘s sources!

Who is Björn Gustafsson

In 2008, Carina Berg was married to Kristian Luuk, who was the leader of the Eurovision Song Contest at the time. Björn Gustafsson was his sidekick and in an acclaimed intermission he performed his “Kärlekssång till Carina Berg” (“Lovesong to Carina Berg“) where he tried to convince her to dump her husband for him. He also presented the Swedish vote the very same year, at the Eurovision Song Contest.

The song became the comedian’s and actor’s big breakthrough and since then he has been named Sweden‘s funniest man, and made both Swedish and international careers with films such as “Spy” and roles in the TV series “People of earth“, “Clark” and the TV4 series about Ture Sventon.

Who is Carina Berg?

Carina Berg, has since 2012 been associated with Discovery and Kanal 5 and has made a variety of series, by herself or with partner Christine Meltzer, such as “Berg & Meltzer in America“, “A Job for Berg“, “Berg & Meltzer at the Oscars“, “The World’s Toughest Job with Carina Berg” and “Berg’s Dream House“.

In August, however, it became known that Berg had left his exclusive contract with Kanal 5 to freelance and host the Childhood Cancer Gala on Viaplay and TV3. And now she will go to SVT to lead Melodifestivalen 2024 together with Björn Gustafsson.

SVT’s response

Aftonbladet has been in contact with Melodifestivalen‘s project manager Anders Wistbacka, who does not want to comment on the choice of host and he states:

“We will present the host of the Eurovision Song Contest later this winter, and until then I can’t comment on the issue,”

Sweden: Danny Saucedo is back at Melodifestivalen, according to Aftonbladet!

Torbjörn Ek and Stina Dahlgren, reporters at Aftonbladet did it again and revealed six more participating acts for Melodifestivalen 2024! We remind you that last year, Aftonbladet revealed 24 out of the 28 acts of Melodifestivalen 2023, even before SVT announced the line-up officially.

As we are approaching December 1, when the final line-up of Melodifestivalen 2024 will be revealed, the Aftonbladet is now nearing 30 acts! Here are the three new names that Aftonbladet brought to the table:

Danny Saucedo

Danny Saucedo, 37, hopes to return to the mainstream Swedish music scene by participating in Melodifestivalen in 2024, according to several sources that Aftonbladet has been in contact with, as he hasn’t made a major success with his latest releases.

The source said he knows he’s gambling by going to Melodifestivalen, he has to have a really strong song and make sure he gets a hit, therefore, the information that reached Aftonbladet in the late autumn has swayed back and forth. Several people who work closely with Melodifestivalen‘s editorial staff have speculated about Danny‘s participation, but now he is said to have finally accepted. Saucedo is said to have collaborated together with Michel Zitron, 42, who has previously been involved in Swedish House Mafia‘s “Don’t you worry child” and “Save the world” and worked with both Avicii and Alesso. The collaboration will also be a bit of a reunion as Zitron was also behind one of Saucedo‘s very first hits, “If Only You” which was the most played song on Swedish radio in 2008.

Elisa Lindström

Aftonbladet can also reveal that Elisa Lindström, 32, is ready for Melodifestivalen 2024. Lindström, who is currently playing one of the main roles in the schlager musical “De’ e’ det här vi kallar kärlek” based on Lasse Holm‘s music, has competed twice before, but without succeeding in advancing from the competitions. Now it could be third time’s the charm.

C-Joe

According to several sources with insight into the matter, the artist C-Joe, or Charles Koroma, 31, as his real name is, will also compete in Melodifestivalen. C-Joe, who is from Gävle with roots in Sierra Leone, has attracted attention locally several times over the years and has released music since 2017. Now will be the first time he will take place in the really big arena, in front of Melodifestivalen‘s multi-million audience, according to Aftonbladet‘s informant.

Increased security measures in place for Eurovision 2024!

Concerns regarding the security level of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest, which is scheduled to take place in May in Malmö, Sweden, are intensifying in light of the volatile circumstances in the Middle East. More precisely, many fear that a terrorist attack may be directed towards the contest. In response to these worries, this year’s organizers have stated unequivocally that there will be higher levels of security than in previous years.

Specifically, Ebba Adielsson, executive producer for Eurovision on the Swedish public television, specifically stated that there was no need for concern because SVT, which recently organized the competition in 2013 and 2016, is planning this year’s competition with a security focus in light of the current circumstances. To make sure the required actions are taken, the organizers are in regular communication with the Malmö police authority.

In the meantime, the Competition’s executive producer, Martin Österdahl, stated the following:

Each year, EBU collaborates closely with the authorities to guarantee the security of all attendees of the Eurovision Song Contest.

It has not yet been revealed which countries will take part in the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest. This is probably connected to Israel and the higher threat of terrorism that its participation would pose. In the upcoming period, the EBU decision is anticipated to be finalized.

EBU’s statement on the Eurovision 2024 participating countries list!

It is yet unknown which countries will compete in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in May in Malmö, Sweden. This is in contrast with previous years, when the list of participating countries was released as early as October by the EBU.

There have been rumors circulating on which countries might or might not participate this year because of the delay. As a result, the EBU stated the following:

The list of public service media broadcasters who will take part next year is currently being finalized and will be published in its entirety once preparations are complete.

Thus, it can be inferred from this statement that the countries that will take part in Malmö have not yet been determined. After all, there have been instances in which the aforementioned list was released in January or December.

As of now 35 countries have confirmed their participation in Eurovision 2024, while four broadcasters -Bosnia and Herzegovina, Andorra, Monaco, and Slovakia- have announced that they will not return to the contest.

Sweden: Controversial Fröken Snusk is reportedly ready for Melodifestivalen 2024.

Torbjörn Ek and Stina Dahlgren, reporters at Aftonbladet just reported one more artists for Melodifestivalen 2024, back-to-back after their article last night!

We remind you that last year, Aftonbladet revealed 24 out of the 28 acts of Melodifestivalen 2023, even before SVT announced the line-up officially.

It’s none other than the epadunk star Fröken Snusk who is said to be ready and is one of the very first to be informed that she had been accepted, according to a source.

Fröken Snusk has made a big name for herself in the music genre epadunk in recent years with hits such as “Rid mig som en dalahäst” och “Raggarbilar (Warra warra)“. Many people are surprised that SVT has chosen to include an artist whose lyrics are often anything but family-friendly.

In addition to lyrics that relate to sex, Fröken Snusk is also known for the pink balaclava she always wears over her face. Her real identity is therefore a secret for the time being, and she has said in previous interviews that she has no plans to take off her mask.

It has been speculated that Fröken Snusk will compete together with the artist and producer Rasmus Gozzi. The two have together achieved great success and created several hits together. According to Aftonbladet’s sources, Rasmus will not be on stage during Melodifestivalen, but let Fröken Snusk shine herself. However, he will still be involved in the entry in some way and will therefore most likely be seen behind the scenes during the competition.

We remind you that Melodifestivalen 2024 is scheduled to take place between February 3rd to March 9th, while SVT has received 2624 songs.

Sweden: A Swedish reality TV star ready to compete at Melodifestivalen 2024!

Torbjörn Ek and Stina Dahlgren, reporters at Aftonbladet did it again and revealed one more participating act for Melodifestivalen 2024! We remind you that last year, Aftonbladet revealed 24 out of the 28 acts of Melodifestivalen 2023, even before SVT announced the line-up officially.

Aftonbladet just revealed that the “Swedish Hollywood Wives” reality star Gunilla Persson is ready for the competition. Reportedly, the song will focus on her persona “The Gunilla“.

The rumours have been circulating since the 64-year-old Gunilla Persson, and her daughter Erika Persson, were spotted in the songwriter and producer Fredrik Andersson’s music studio at the record company Cardiac in Ystad earlier this fall.

Initially people thought that her daughter was set to compete at Melodifestivalen 2024, but well informed sources say that Gunilla will perform, solo. The song is written by Fredrik Andersson who, among other things, wrote the Melodifestivalen winner “If I were sorry” with Frans. Andersson also has a bit of an expertise at writing songs that capture personalities without making fun of the person in question or who performs them, such as Fran‘s “Who’s da man” (the Zlatan song). Her participation is guaranteed to be the talk of the town next year, says a person familiar with the matter.
