Luxembourg Song Contest nears final stage with 79 song submissions for Eurovision Selection

The Luxembourg Song Contest, Luxembourg’s national final for the Eurovision Song Contest, is entering its final stage. A total of 79 songs have been submitted for the chance to represent the Grand Duchy in Basel. Among the contestants are artists from Switzerland, Italy, France, and Greece.

Strong Luxembourgish Presence in This Year’s Entries

According to a press release from RTL, from November 8 to 10, 53 different artists will participate in live auditions to determine the finalists for the Luxembourg Song Contest.

These 53 artists submitted a total of 79 songs (some submitted more than one). This year, RTL has tightened the rules: only artists with Luxembourgish nationality, those who have resided in Luxembourg for the last three years, or those with proven cultural ties to the country were eligible to participate.

Of those who applied, 75% held Luxembourgish nationality, 25% had resided in the country over the past three years, and 5% fell into the final category, demonstrating a cultural connection with Luxembourg. Additionally, 70% of the competing artists are of Luxembourgish origin, while the remaining contestants represent various nationalities, including Greek.

Notably, 70% of the songs have been written or co-written by the performer. A total of 135 artists applied, but only 53 met RTL’s strict eligibility criteria.

The International Jury of the Luxembourg Song Contest

During the auditions, a five-member international jury will evaluate the candidates and select those who will compete in the Luxembourg Song Contest to win the ticket to Basel.

The jury members are:

  • Diogo Fernandes, TV producer – Portugal
  • Eldar Gasimov, singer (Eurovision 2011) – Azerbaijan
  • Marie Myriam, singer (Eurovision 1977) – France
  • Poli Genova, singer (Eurovision 2011, 2016) – Bulgaria
  • Niamh Kavanagh, singer (Eurovision 1993) – Ireland

The finalists will be announced on November 18, and the Luxembourg Song Contest will take place on January 25.

Junior Eurovision 2024: Luxembourg to broadcast the contest live for the first time!

In a delightful development, Luxembourg’s national broadcaster, RTL, will make history by airing the 22nd Junior Eurovision Song Contest live on November 16. This marks the first time RTL will broadcast the event, even though the country has not yet participated in the competition.

RTL Zwee has officially scheduled the Junior Eurovision 2024 in its broadcasting for November 16, complete with commentary in Luxembourgish by Raoul Roos and Eric Lehmann. This broadcast signals a significant return for Luxembourg to Eurovision events, especially following its re-entry into the adult contest after a three-decade absence. Could this be a precursor to Luxembourg’s potential debut in the Junior Eurovision in the near future? Only time will tell…

More countries will broadcast the contest

In addition to Luxembourg, other non-participating countries will also air the contest. Lithuania and Montenegro are set to join Luxembourg in broadcasting the event, along with Croatia, a founding member of the contest and its first ever winner in 2003. These countries may be looking to reintroduce their audiences to the children’s contest, gauging interest for a possible return the next years.

It’s worth noting that countries like Cyprus and San Marino have also returned to the competition after several years away, indicating a growing interest in the Junior Eurovision format across Europe.

Luxembourg: Details for the Songwriting Camp!

A songwriting camp took place in Luxembourg the past few days, as the Grand Duchy has started the search of its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025!

According to the country’s national broadcaster RTL, Rocklab organized the camp in Esch-Belval to help artists produce songs that could compete in next year’s Eurovision. The camp was led by Greig Watts, an experienced A&R representive who organized the first ‘Eurovision Camp’ in the Netherlands in 2015.

The Grand Duchy returned to Eurovision this year after a 31-year hiatus and created the Luxembourg Song Contest as a new national final for the country. Several of the performers who competed in this year’s competition were among the 20 artists accepted into the camp.

Joel Marques, CHAiLD, Edsun, Naomi Ayé, Krick and many members of One Last Time participated, along with other Luxembourgish talents. At the camp, each of the artists had to write and produce a song for Eurovision within eight hours. The artists were assisted by international music producers and songwriters.

One of the songwriters who came to Luxembourg for the camp was Linda Dale – who knows how to write a winning song. Dale was one of the composers behind “The Code”, Eurovision winner Nemo for Switzerland this year in Sweden.

However, it is unclear whether these songs were written specifically for the Luxembourg Song Contest. In addition, the artists selected to participate in the camp will not necessarily be in the LSC lineup – a decision has yet to be made on who will compete in next year’s national final.

All the same, there is a chance that one of the songs produced at the camp will be Luxembourg’s next Eurovision entry. At the camp, Dale told the artists in attendance that “it’s important to always say yes to the ideas that come up at a camp like this, because that’s how ‘The Code’ was born.”

Nana Mouskouri: Officially Retires from Music – The Emotional Decision of the Legendary Singer

Nana Mouskouri has announced her decision to officially retire from the music scene, as revealed in an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel.

The iconic singer, who is about to celebrate her 90th birthday, mentioned that she plans to give a few more performances before stepping away from the stage for good. “I believe I have done enough,” she stated, expressing that she feels her artistic journey has come full circle.

She also emphasized that she does not wish to perform if she cannot meet the expectations of her audience. “I can’t pretend I’m young anymore, and I don’t want to make my audience suffer. I don’t have the right to get on stage if I can’t sing well, even if the audience applauds out of love,” she explained.

To mark her upcoming birthday, Mouskouri will be releasing a new album featuring some of her greatest hits, re-recorded with an orchestra. “When I listen to these recordings, I can’t hold back my tears,” the singer admitted, clearly moved.

A significant chapter in her career was her participation in the 1963 Eurovision Song Contest, where she represented Luxembourg with the song “À force de prier.” While she did not win, her performance helped solidify her name on the international music scene.

It’s worth noting that in 2008, Nana Mouskouri gave a farewell concert in Athens, but by 2009, she returned to live performances, saying she couldn’t stay away from her audience. Now, however, she seems determined to bid a final goodbye to the stage.
