RAI: Considerations for Selecting Eurovision Representative from Sanremo via International Committee!

The lights went out at the Teatro Ariston for the triumphant 74th edition of the Sanremo Festival, with 1.5 million more viewers tuning in compared to last year to watch the grand final on RAI1. Shortly before, the RAI press conference, hosted by Amadeus and three past winners, concluded with the confirmation from Angelina Mango that she would represent Italy at Eurovision 2024. However, there was another significant development regarding Sanremo’s role in selecting Italy’s Eurovision representative.

Separation of Sanremo Winner and Eurovision Representation from 2025?

During the press conference, Amadeus was asked if, during his years as host and artistic director of the festival, he ever considered using an international committee to select the most suitable artist and song to represent Italy at Eurovision.

While Amadeus answered negatively, the response from RAI officials was different, indicating that it is something they will consider for the next year.

The above response was obviously prompted by this year’s events, particularly the near-victory of Geolier with a song widely acknowledged as having no chance at Eurovision, while there were several songs at Sanremo that would have performed much better. Furthermore, Sanremo serves incidentally as Italy’s national final, and the voting criteria of both the audience, journalists, and radio representatives do not necessarily align with Eurovision representation.

So, the question is reasonable, and RAI‘s answer is also sensible, perhaps believing that disconnecting the Sanremo winner from Eurovision representation and selecting the artist who will represent Italy in the competition may yield even better results, especially in a year like this one.

RAI‘s Mammoth Revenues and Viewership

The Sanremo final ended with massive television ratings for RAI, surpassing last year’s by a significant margin. Specifically, an average of 74.1% of viewers, totaling 14,301,000, tuned in, compared to 66% and 12,256,000 viewers last year.

The moment with the highest viewership was during Amadeus‘s humorous sketch with Fiorello, with over 18,000,000 viewers watching RAI1, and the peak share reached 85.26% during the announcement of the top 5 results.

RAI‘s revenue from advertising during the five days of the festival was €60,182,000, far exceeding the expenses incurred by the Italian public broadcaster for Sanremo, proving that creating something so remarkable yields commensurate returns.

Amadeus‘s Future at Sanremo and His Possible Successor

Amadeus revealed that in two weeks, he will meet with RAI for a general assessment of Sanremo 2024. He did not clarify whether there would be any discussion about extending their collaboration into 2025. However, the name of a possible successor to Amadeus as host and artistic director of the festival has already been circulating in the press.

That person is the former politician and long-time popular Italian television host, Gerry Scotti. A few days earlier, Amadeus and Gerry Scotti had dinner, discussing the Sanremo Festival. The only issue for him to take on this significant role is that he belongs to the dynamics of private television and would need to resolve any outstanding issues there.

Of course, all of the above will make sense if Amadeus steps down and does not remain in his position in 2025. In that case, Amadeus will be the longest-serving host and artistic director of Sanremo.

Stay tuned for all the developments!

Italy: Angelina Mango said “Si” at Eurovision 2024 and is going to Malmö!

The big winner of Sanremo 2024, Angelina Mango, has just confirmed in the press conference that she accepts her right to represent Italy in Eurovision 2024, in May in Malmö with the song that brought her victory at the festival, La Noia.

Angelina Mango managed to win the 74th Sanremo Song Festival, despite the fact that Geolier won the televoting with a record percentage, reaching 60%. The support she received from journalists and radio representatives brought her to the first place and thus gave her the right to be the one who will represent Italy in Eurovision 2024. The 22-year-old performer accepted her right and this is how we will see her in May in Malmö, to represent Italy in the contest.

Just three women have represented Italy since the country’s return to the competition in 20111 with less than stellar results, with only Nina Zilli managing to make the top 10, with Emma and Francesca Michielin finishing 21st and 16th respectively.

The song with which Angelina Mango will represent Italy at Eurovision 2024 is La Noia, the song with which she won in Sanremo. The composer of the song is Dardust, who this year also signs the participation of Luxembourg.

A few words about Angelina Mango

Angelina Mango is 22 years old. She is the daughter of the well-known artist Mango. She became famous after her participation in 2022 in the popular talent show, Amici di Maria De Filippi, where she took second place. She has a discography from 2020 and has released nine singles. Her musical career began in a band with her brother, in which she still remains a member, despite the solo course she has already charted.

Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest

Italy is one of the founding members of the Eurovision Song Contest, making its debut in the first contest in 1956. It has won three times with Gigliola Cinquetti (1964), Toto Cutugno (1990) and Maneskin (2021).

The country was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest by the most famous and internationally recognized artists throughout Eurovision history: Ana Oxa, Domenico Modugno, Albano, Romina Power, Franco Batiatto, Umberto Tozzi, Mahmood, Matia Bazar, Marco Mengoni, Emma Marrone , Il Volo , Francesco Gabbani, Raphael Gualazzi, Massimo Ranieri, Ricardo Fogli, Maneskin, etc.

Italy withdrew from the contest in 1998 and returned to Eurovision in 2011 after a 13-year absence. Since their return to the competition, the Italians have been very successful, using Sanremo as their method of choice in almost all of their entries, taking two second places, one third and six other top-10 finishes since 2011.

This year will be Italy’s 49th participation in the competition. In 2023 Marco Mengoni took fourth place for Italy, with Due Vita.

Italy: Angelina Mango is the winner of the Festival di Sanremo 2024 | All that happened during the Last Night!

Welcome back Eurovision fans to the world of Sanremo for the fifth and final time for this year. The 74th Festival di Sanremo, or the Italian Song Festival, one of the most beloved festivals of the whole world has reached the Fifth or La Quinta Serata, the last Night, the one that is going to define the winner of this year’s Festival and the possible entrant for Italy in Eurovision Song Contest 2024, since the winners will earn the well known “right of first refusal”, meaning the right to represent Italy only if they wish to do so.

Live from the coastal town of Sanremo, in Liguria, Teatro Ariston opened for one more and last time its gates and welcomed everyone around the world to celebrate, to feel and to dance to the Italian music. Tonight all of the thirty (30) entrants performed once more their songs, just like they did during the First Night, and were judged only by the public during the Night’s first round of voting at least, since during the second and final voting round a sum of televoting and the two juries was held and determined the winner. Thus, brace yourselves for La Serata Finale of this year’s Sanremo, keep reading and find out who was the ultimate winner of the Festival!

Apart from the live, and lucky, audience inside the Teatro Ariston, viewers of all around the world were able to watch for once more the Festival live on RAI Uno and RAIPlay or to listen to the live coverage from RAI Radio 2. Before the official starting of the Festival, Gazelle, Mr. Rain and Sangiovanni shared some of their thoughts for being part of a such a huge Festival.

As an opening ceremony the Italian Army Music Band inside the Teatro performed the Italian National Anthem.

In the beginning of the Night, the general ranking of all the thirty (30) contestants was revealed, according on how the results had been formed that far since the beginning of the Festival.

The presenters

For his fifth and final consecutive year, the famous Italian television and radio presenter, Amadeus, was the main host and the artistic director of the Festival, while on his side, as a co-host, for this final evening, was the famous Italian comedian, singer, radio and television presenter Rosario Fiorello, known just as Fiorello, who accompanied him during all the previous Nights but covering everything from outside the theatre, but now it was time for the audience to see Fiorello on stage performing a medley to Michael Jackson.

The Fifth Night’s format

The Fifth Night is also the final one, at the end of which everyone will know the one and only winner. The Night was consisted of two voting rounds. During the first one, which began right before the first candidate performance, all of the thirty (30) entrants performed for the last time their official entries, while during the second voting round, the top five from the first round had to reperforme their songs, so the winner could be determined among them. During the first voting round only the public determined the result, by holding the absolute 100% of the final result. That specific result was of course added up to the results obtained that far, from all the previous Nights. Ultimately, towards the end of the Night a second and final voting round among the public, the jury of the press and the jury of the radio was held.

The Fifth Night’s performances

All of the thirty (30) entrants had to perform for one final time their songs. The lines opened for the public to vote right before the first performance. Remember that the first voting round’s ranking was determined only by the public. Thus according also to the official running order that was released a few hours ago, the Fifth Night’s performances, along with their voting number, were the following:

After all the thirty (30) entries had been performed, the lines were closed for the public, for that first voting round of the Night.

Special Guests

Of course La Serata Finale of Sanremo 2024 had also an amazing guest list. The Italian actor, model and television personality Luca Argentero made a lovely appearance along with the Italian actor Claudio Gioè. The Italian ballet dancer Roberto Bolle gave also an incredible ballet performance on stage, accompanied by his dancers. The Italian rapper Tananai was also present and performed live at the square of Sanremo, along with rapper Tedua, who had also performed during the First Night, was aboard on Costa Smeralda on the open sea singing “Red Lights“. However, the most undoubtedly exquisit guest was by far Gigliola Cinquetti, who was the very first Italian winner in Eurovision Song Contest back in 1964, with her beloved song “Non ho l’età”, which was actually performed 60 years later.

The first round’s results

As it is already mentioned, the Fifth Night’s voting procedure is consisted of two parts. Thus, during the first round, only the public was able to vote, hence the absolute 100% of the result was determined by televoting. This specific result was added to all the previous televoting results of the Nights, meaning the 50% of the Second Night, the 50% of the Third Night and the Fourth’s 34%. So , the top thirty general ranking was the following:

  1. Irama – “Tu no”
  2. Ghali – “Casa mia”
  3. Angelina Mango – “La noia”
  4. Geolier – “I’p me, tu p’te”
  5. Annalisa – “Sinceramente”
  6. Mahmood – “Tuta gold”
  7. Loredana Bertè – “Pazza”
  8. Il Volo – “Capolavoro”
  9. Alessandra Amoroso – “Fino a qui”
  10. Alfa – “Vai!”
  11. Gazelle – “Tutto qui”
  12. Il Tre – “Fragili”
  13. Diodato – “Ti muovi”
  14. Emma – “Apnea”
  15. Fiorella Mannoia – “Mariposa”
  16. The Kolors “Un ragazzo una ragazza”
  17. Mr. Rain – “Due altalene”
  18. Santi Francesi – “L’amore in bocca”
  19. Negramaro – “Ricominciamo tutto”
  20. Dargen D’Amico – “Onda alta”
  21. Ricchi e Poveri – “Ma non tutta ma vita”
  22. BigMama – “La rabbia non ti basta”
  23. Rose Villain – “Click Boom!”
  24. Clara – “Diamanti grezzi”
  25. Francesco Renga and Nek – “Pazzo di te”
  26. Maninni – “Spettacolare”
  27. La Sad – “Autodistruttivo”
  28. Bnkr44 – “Governo punk”
  29. Sangiovanni – “Finiscimi”
  30. Fred de Palma – “Il cielo non ci vuole”

The second round’s (Super Final) results and the Festival’s winner

Only the top five performaces qualified for the second round or the Super Final. The second voting round began among only those top five artists from the first round; during their recap of their songs the lines opened once more, so the public could vote one last time. During that time, the final result, thus the Festival’s winner as well, was determined by a voting split system among the public again, holding the 34%, the jury of the press TV and web, holding the 33% and the jury of the radio holding the rest 33%. Thus, the Festival’s very final top five was the following:

  1. Angelina Mango – “La noia”
  2. Geolier – “I p’me, tu p’te”
  3. Annalisa – “Sinceramente”
  4. Ghali – “Casa mia”
  5. Irama – “Tu no”

Of course this means that the official winner of the Festival di Sanremo 2024 and Marco Mengoni’s successor is Angelina Mango with her song “La noia”.

The only thing that remains to see is whether will accept to represent Italy in Eurovision Song Contest 2024, in Malmö or not and if he/she does so, with which song of his/hers.
